A witness identified Robert Chambliss, a member of the Ku Klux Klan, as the man who placed the bomb under the steps of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. He was arrested and charged with murder and possessing a box of 122 sticks of dynamite without a permit. On October 8, 1963, Chambliss was found not guilty of murder and received a hundred-dollar fine and a six-month jail sentence for having the dynamite.

Mel Rothenberg, “Mid-East Upheaval: What the Empire Sees”

MRZine

The US left and progressives have been preoccupied about what we can do to impact events in the Mid-East, particularly obsessing about what we can do to counter US intervention. In general, it is good to want to act, not just talk or analyze, in a crisis situation.

However, despite the valiant and necessary efforts of the anti-war forces to mobilize against the increasing military intervention by the US and its imperial allies, our effect will be limited until we have an adequate understanding of the fundamental forces now in play in the Mid-East. Much of our current slogans and agitation are recycled from previous battles, of limited relevance to a new and unfolding reality.

The Economic Crisis in Iceland: “IMF Medicine” is not the Solution By Prof. Michael Hudson

8 April, 2011 — Global Research

[Ed. As we know, the Icelandic people voted no to committing financial suicide.]

Will Iceland Vote “No” on April 9, or commit financial suicide?

A year ago, in March 2010, Iceland’s economy was so small that it did not warrant much attention when 93% of its voters rejected the Social Democratic-Green government’s surrender to Gordon Brown and the Dutch, the European Union (EU) bureaucracy and IMF demands that it impose austerity as penance for believing the neoliberal fairy tales about how bank deregulation and “free markets” would make it the richest, happiest country in the world. Indeed it seemed to be, according to United Nations data. But the dream was dashed after the Icesave electronic Internet bank branches abroad were emptied out by their proprietors.

Libya Rebels had NATO Weapons from Day 1 | Global Research TV

11 April 2011 — grtv

Libyan rebels from the Feb. 17 armed coup attempt to overthrow the Libyan government had brand new weapons since the first day of the uprising. These weapons were of non-Libyan origin and had already been secretly imported into Libya in advance of Feb. 17. There are millions of dollars worth of technically advanced light and heavy weaponry.

It appears that there were secret foreign benefactors giving state-of-the-art weapons to Benghazi terror gangs in the coup attempt, and the video even shows Western trainers showing them how to use the weapons against the Libyan Army. The Benghazi terrorist Libyan rebels from the Feb. 17 uprising appear to be paid mercenaries and Libyan expatriates, mixed in with naive students and Al Qaeda veteran foreign fighters, who each hope that they will come out on top.

Evidence indicates that the rebels are ex-patriate Libyans on CIA and MI6 payrolls who have been sent back and have infiltrated Libya as part of the coup attempt against the Libyan government of Col. Muammar Al Gaddafi.

Joe Bageant: Poet, Redneck Revolutionary, R.I.P. By Marc Campbell

Joe in Hopkins Village, Belize

Joe Bageant was an extraordinarily gifted writer and thinker. Author of Deer Hunting with Jesus and countless essays and editorials on politics and society, Joe was a champion of human rights and a fearless critic of our government’s mistreatment of its working class. His writing is imbued with compassion but also a caustic wit that laid bare the working class’s tendency to do what is in their own worst interests. Watching Joe tear into the Teabaggers was like watching an extremely large feral cat play with its food. His death comes at a time when his voice is needed more than ever. I’m not sure there’s anyone out there that can fill the void.

This is not an obituary. I’m not trying to give the reader an overview of Joe’s life in a few paragraphs. I am sharing a few of my memories of Joe as a friend and writer.

Andrei Volodin – Forces Regrouped in World Politics?

11 April 2011 — Strategic Culture Foundation

The BRICS summit will convene in China’s Sanya beach resort on April 14. For the first time in the alliance’s relatively short history, South Africa will participate in the forum as a member along with Brazil, Russia, India, and China, while the disquieting political settings of the early 2011 reinforce the world’s interest in the coming talks between the leaders of the emerging economic heavyweights.

Rainbow Pie: Attention Must Be Paid By Bob Kincaid

10 April 2011 — Joe BageantHead On Radio Network

rainbow-pie2.jpgLet me be up front about things: I want you to buy Rainbow Pie: A Redneck Memoir. I want you to buy it not because I have any financial interest in it. I don’t. I want you to buy this book because it is a magnificent memorial both by and to one of the best American writers of the waning of the 20th and dawning of the 21st centuries. I want you to buy this book because, as the line from ‘Death of a Salesman’ notes, ‘Attention must be paid’.

I met Joe Bageant online in 2007. After reading Deer Hunting with Jesus: Dispatches from America’s Class War and many of his essays online, I sought Joe out for an on-air interview, which he gave me with what I came to know as his characteristic great good humor. From that conversation (the only one in which I have given over an entire show to a guest) forward, I knew I had a friend and comrade. Our conversations thereafter only cemented that understanding.

Now that he’s gone, the fact that I never got to meet him personally is somewhat assuaged by his having allowed me to meet his family and his world in Rainbow Pie. Being as I am a hillbilly and a redneck, those are my people, too, with their uncouth joy, unbearable sorrows and unending labors. Very likely, they’re yours, as well. It is a world I recognize easily, and recognize also that it was not something about which it is easy to write.’
