Relief at Gaza ceasefire can’t mask its frailty
Crispian Balmer, Ma’an News Agency 11/21/2012
Hamas celebrated a victory in their Gaza stronghold Wednesday after a truce was declared with Israel, where a sober reckoning of how the next round may go underscored the total lack of trust between the two foes.
Palestinians and Israelis alike were relieved that their eight-day conflict had come to an end without a bloody invasion of the Gaza Strip. But on both sides there was a foreboding that their ceasefire might not last very long.
“We are sceptical,” said a senior Israeli government official, who declined to be named. “But the Egyptians and Americans have backed this deal, so if it falls apart they know that we would have a legitimate reason to go in hard.”
On the face of it, both Israel and Hamas, which rules Gaza, can draw positive conclusions at the end of a brutal clash that killed over 170 Palestinians, including more than 30 children, and five Israelis.
Although Hamas lost its top military commander and suffered serious hits to its infrastructure and weaponry, it has nonetheless emerged with its reputation in the Arab world significantly enhanced and its standing at home embellished.
Israel can take comfort from the fact it dealt painful blows to its enemy, found a way to work with the Islamist leadership of Egypt, and showed that it can defend itself from a barrage of incoming missiles with its high-tech Iron Dome interceptor.
“No one is under the illusion that this is going to be an everlasting ceasefire. It is clear to everyone it will only be temporary,” said Michael Herzog, a former chief of staff at the Israeli ministry of defense. more.. e-mail
When Israelis escape to shelters
Rashid Shahin, Ma’an News Agency 11/21/2012
From my own experience, when I was living in Baghdad during the war on Iraq in 2003, I can recall how dreadful the feeling of the people was when they heard the sirens warning them of a new raid by the American warplanes.
Men and women from upper apartments were coming to our apartment, which was in the first floor, looking for shelter. At the time, no shelter could protect anybody from the destructive missiles striking the city around the clock.
I could see the fear in the eyes of men, women and children; some of the women were not able to hide their fear, and they were crying, shivering and weeping in a way that would break anyone’s heart.
I remember how I was trying to protect my little child Omar — who was less than three years old — by putting headphones on his ears and playing the stereo on the highest volume so he wouldn’t hear the roaring of the American warplanes which struck Baghdad randomly.
It is not easy to see people, especially children, whoever they are, wherever they are, whichever nationality or religion they are, running fearfully, escaping danger, to hide in a shelter, here or there, under a tree or behind a wall, or in a very well-reinforced shelter.
Unfortunately, in the latest Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, pictures are circulating in the international media mostly one side. Because Israel had banned much of the international media from entering Gaza, many try to go through Egypt. The Egyptians authorities often prevent their access, too. more.. e-mail
How many children will Israel slaughter…
Stuart Littlewood, Redress 11/20/2012
before world leaders deliver law and justice?
Despite the piles of dead in Gaza and – for the second time in four years – the row upon row of charred and broken little bodies of children, Western leaders still shirk their duty and call on the two parties to restart the squalid, lopsided peace process that had led nowhere and only serves to give the Israelis more time to consolidate their territorial gains.
Instead of carrying out their responsibilities, they shamelessly shovel their foul mess onto the Palestinians to clean up. What are the Palestinians supposed to negotiate? Why should they have to bargain for their freedom and property with the thugs that stole it?
For decades the Israelis have played for time, whining that they have “no partner for peace” while continuing to seize and colonize all the Palestinian land and water resources needed to fulfil the Zionist dream of a Greater Israel from the Jordan to the Mediterranean – or, some say, the Euphrates to the Nile.
To that end the Zionist regime has continually violated UN resolutions, international law and the norms of human decency while rushing to establish irreversible facts on the ground, like the monstrous settlements and their supporting infrastructure, and to press ahead with further demolition of Arab homes and more ethnic cleansing.
Contempt for UN resolutions
Why should Palestinians even entertain the idea of talking to their criminal tormentors when the path to peace is clearly set out in countless rulings by the United Nations and by the International Court of Justice?…. more.. e-mail
In photos: Israel relentlessly bombs Gaza, West Bank protests repressed
Electronic Intifada 11/18/2012
Israel has shown no mercy in its bombing of the besieged and occupied Gaza Strip, as airstrikes and shelling entered into the fifth day on Sunday (see previous photostory documenting the run-up to and first days of the assault). Israel has reportedly approved the drafting of 75,000 reservists, though so far there has been no ground invasion.
With nearly 50 fatalities in Gaza since Israel’s breaking of a tenuous ceasefire on Wednesday, the World Health Organization warned on Saturday that Gaza’s hospitals “are overwhelmed with casualties from Israel’s bombings and face critical shortages of drugs and medical supplies,” according to the Reuters news agency (“Gaza hospitals stretched, need supplies to treat wounded: WHO”).
Reuters adds: “the WHO, quoting Health Ministry officials in Gaza, said 382 people have been injured – 245 adults and 137 children.” Gaza’s health facilities were already “severely over stretched mainly as a result of the siege of Gaza,” the UN organization said.
Meanwhile, Palestinian resistance groups fired more long-rage rockets towards Tel Aviv, and sirens were heard in Jerusalem for the first time. Gaza groups also fired short-range rockets, many of them intercepted by the Iron Dome system, according to Israeli media. Rockets were also reported to have been fired from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. Three Israeli civilians were killed by a rocket fired from Gaza on Thursday.
Protests against Israel’s assault on Gaza erupted across the West Bank, where protesters clashed with Israeli soldiers. According to the Ma’an News Agency, five Palestinian citizens of Israel were detained at a protest in Jerusalem’s Beit Hanina neighborhood and ten persons were detained by Israel at protests in Gaza across the West Bank yesterday. Israeli forces also arrested protesters outside Jerusalem’s Old City on Friday. more.. e-mail

Zionist drones and warplanes pollute Gaza’s skies immediately after 9 pm “cease-fire”
In Gaza: 21 Nov 2012 – After one week of Israel’s Nov 14th declaration of war on Gaza, a cease-fire was allegedly reached between Hamas and other resistance and Israel. Yet, 10 minutes after the 9pm cease-fire began, an Israeli warplane bombed a media office in Gaza’s southern Khan Younis city, and drones and Israeli F-16 warplanes continued to fill Gaza’s skies. Late into the night, 2 am, the drones and warplanes still pollute Gaza’s skies, psychological terror on a terrorized people who had more than 160 killed and over 1000 injured by Israeli bombing in the span of a week, and who know very well that the sound of a drone or an F-16 roaring overhead usually means death. **zoom in for detail of the drone’s bombing capability **drone flying over our area, civilian residential area Filed under: Israel war on Gaza , Israeli attacks on Gaza , psychological terrormore
Israel Is Not Jewish
Dissident Voice: 21 Nov 2012 – In 1982 I attended an international teachers’ Summer Institute over a period of eight weeks. It so happened to have fallen right in the middle of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. The teachers were from all continents and of all faiths. Like the Director and myself, there was a Jewish contingency of teachers. The participants were East and West Europeans, Pakistanis, Africans, and there were Palestinians. Who amongst us really understood what a Palestinian was? The Sabra and Shatila massacres were to follow just a few short months later. As I spoke with the Director, the shame and embarrassment we both felt were palpable, and we were very clear to all who inquired that Israel did not represent us. Nearly thirty years later Jews with a conscience are feeling the same. Only this time we are including extreme anger. The hijacking of Jewish ethos by murderous psychopaths in Israel, and…more
World Has Put up with Zionist Apartheid for too Long
Dissident Voice: 21 Nov 2012 – Israel’s holocaust of innocents in Gaza has not sated the blood lust of its Zionist rulers, with the death toll rising to over 110 and the injured numbering more than a thousand — less than six days after the latest murderous offensive began. Preparations for a ground offensive involving up to 75,000 troops threaten a repeat of the slaughter carried out by Israel four years ago in Gaza when more than 1,400 Palestinians were killed during a three-week killing orgy. Then as now, most of the victims are children, their bloodied bodies pulled out from rubble, piled up in morgues; their innocent eyes in a frozen stare at the moment of horror visited on them in their homes. How can the world tolerate such barbarity? Well, the majority of the world is not tolerating it. Humanity is horrified and aggrieved by these atrocities. All across the world, civic society and…more
