Within hours of the onset of Operation Pillar of Defense, Israel’s latest military campaign in the Gaza Strip, global news outlets had already turned their spotlight on social media. A raft of stories led with the Israel Defense Forces’ use of the popular networking platforms to advance their public relations message, pointing to their use of Twitter to announce the army’s assassination of Hamas military commander Ahmad al-Ja‘bari and their slickly produced Facebook posts justifying the ongoing aerial bombardment.

European Parliament votes to protect Wikileaks against financial blockade

European Parliament votes to protect WikiLeaks. In a landmark decision today the European Parliament initiated the drafting of legislation that would stop the arbitrary banking blockades against WikiLeaks and other organizations facing economic censorship. This is an important signal from the European lawmakers. It is a recognition of the seriousness of the precedents set in December 2010, still in force, when Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, Western Union and Bank of America launched a unilateral, extrajudicial banking blockade against donations to WikiLeaks.

The American example of the use of prison labor in the interests of private capital was contagious. Private prisons also appeared in a number of other states – the UK, Sweden, Estonia, Australia, and Brazil… In Japan, in May 2007, the first new prison in 50 years opened, which immediately gained the status of «private».  In Estonia, which has the highest percentage of prisoners in Europe (relative to the total population – 0.34), there are two private prisons. In Latvia, a few years ago, the Justice Department was considering construction of private prisons as a way to bring the country out of crisis. Similar projects are also being discussed in Lithuania, Bulgaria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. We are witnessing the birth of «prison capitalism» worldwide… Continue reading
