CIA Activities in Syria: US Never Stops to Step on Same Rake

According to the Washington Post (CIA Ramping up Covert Training Program for Moderate Syrian Rebels, Oct.3), the CIA is expanding a clandestine effort to train opposition fighters in Syria, as U.S. officials said… The Washington Post informs that US officials spoke on the condition of anonymity and said the agency has sent additional paramilitary teams to secret bases in Jordan in recent weeks in a push to double the number of rebel fighters getting CIA instruction and weapons before being sent back to Syria… The CIA is «ramping up and expanding its effort», said a U.S. official familiar with operations in Syria, because «it was clear that the opposition was losing, and not only losing tactically but on a more strategic level»…

…Tehran’s new diplomatic initiatives hold strategic significance for Iran. One could talk about their focus on changing the entire geopolitical architecture of the Middle East. However, the likelihood of an Iranian-American rapprochement, even within the framework of Iran’s «heroic flexibility», is relatively low. From Washington’s point of view, there is currently no chance of fundamentally improving relations with Iran without upsetting its balance of cooperation with Israel and Saudi Arabia, as well as other countries in the Gulf region. In order to tread the road to the White House, Tehran is still going to have to normalise its relations with these countries. As far as Israel is concerned, however, this kind of opportunity for Iran’s new diplomacy so far remains beyond the reach of what is acceptable.

October 1, 2013: US Government Shut Down and Facing Default

America is facing a default in the coming days. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew has said the government will have exhausted its borrowing authority by Oct. 17, leaving the United States just $30 billion cash on hand to pay its bills. In a letter to top congressional leaders, Lew warned that a repeat of the debt brinksmanship of 2011 could inflict great harm on the economy and that «if the government should ultimately become unable to pay all of its bills, the results could be catastrophic»… Obama urgently needs the ceiling raised again. Republicans will make him remember the unfulfillable promise given in 2011 to cut budget expenses. Experts are sure the US rating is doomed to go down in mid-October again. It’ll be a real blow for the government and private business, because ratings influence interest rates and the value of financial instruments (including bonds). The performance staged by Congress in October 2013 is to be no less captivating than the one the world saw in 2011.
