Deal: prisoners for settlements
Sergio Yahni, Alternative Information Center 10/30/2013
Palestinian Minister for Prisoners, Issa Qaraqe, stated after midnight on Wednesday, at a ceremony greeting released Palestinian prisoners in Ramallah, that the PLO would never sign a peace deal with Israel unless it secured the release of all Palestinian prisoners.
“An agreement will never be signed without freeing all prisoners,” Qaraqe said.
The release of the 26 prisoners, most of who were jailed before the Oslo Agreements, comes as part of a tripartite deal between Israel, the US and the PLO, coinciding with the return to peace negotiations in July. According to the agreement, Israel will release Palestinian prisoners in four stages over a nine-month period as a confidence-building measure for Palestinian participation in the talks. The three parties also agreed that Israel would not freeze settlement construction.
Almagor Terror Victims Association appealed the release of prisoners to the Israeli high court, claiming that the first round of releases was responsible for a recent uptick in terror emanating from the West Bank , and requested a delay of the release until the issue could be investigated further. The association also claimed that some of the prisoners were slated for release in error, as they violated the government s own standards of eligibility and had been arrested after the Oslo Agreements.
The High Court of Justice rejected the petition late Tuesday night after a rushed hearing by a panel of three justices, presided over by Deputy Supreme Court President Miriam Naor.
According to the prisoners support group Addameer there are currently 5,007 political prisoners in Israeli jails, including 137 administrative detainees, 12 women and 180 minors. — See also: Israel announces 1,500 new settler homes in East Jerusalem and Israel frees 26 veteran prisonersmore..e-mail

Interview with filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad: My films condemn oppression
Frank Barat, Ma an News Agency 10/29/2013
Frank Barat is an activist based in Belgium and is one of the former coordinators of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine. He recently conducted an interview with Palestinian filmmaker Hany Abu Assad for “The Wall has Ears: Conversations for Palestine.”
Hany Abu Assad is the director of many films including Academy Award-nominated Paradise Now, which focuses on two young Palestinian men preparing for a suicide bombing in Israel.
How did a Palestinian airplane engineer become a filmmaker?
It is because of a lot of elements. One of the most important one was love! I was in love with somebody who was not in love with me and I thought that if I become a famous filmmaker, maybe she will regret her decision one day!
This is what I need, when I feel good or bad, a medium where I can express myself, in a way that is more interesting than dealing with numbers and formulas.
Why did you leave Nazareth in 1980? Was it also for love or was it for something else?
Once again, there are so many reasons that make you do what you have to do. The major reason in 1980 when I left Nazareth was that I felt for a Palestinian living in Israel that there were no other options for you to explore the world. Almost everything was closed to you whether you wanted to make a career in science, art or business.
If you want to explore the world, be curious, have access to information as a Palestinian in Israel, most of the doors are closed to you….more..e-mail

Israel’s twisted logic in keeping EU legislators out of Gaza
Mairav Zonszein, +972 Magazine 10/29/2013
Israel says allowing organizations to visit Gaza inherently strengthens Hamas, even when no visits with Hamas officials are planned. Couldn t the same logic be used to argue for a boycott of Israel, considering Israel s occupation regime?
Israel blocked a European Parliament humanitarian delegation from entering the Gaza Strip through Israel last week, claiming that the visit would strengthen Hamas.
The draft program of the trip, seen by +972, was scheduled to take place this week, October 27-30. The delegation was expected to enter Gaza through Israel s Erez Crossing on Monday morning after spending the night in East Jerusalem and leaving through Erez and and driving straight to Ben-Gurion Airport Wednesday. The program does not appear to include any meetings with Hamas officials; rather, the two-and-a-half-day trip was to focus on civil society and the work of UNRWA, the UN organization supporting Palestinian refugees.
More about the new EU settlement guidelines
In an email to the delegation, the Israel mission to the European Union denied that Israel refused an official visit of the de
legation to Gaza& but rather refused the use of its territory to enter the Gaza Strip. The email went on to explain, this is in line with the policy according to which Israel does not facilitate visits to the Gaza Strip which will strengthen Hamas, a terror organization designated as such also by the European Union.

The EU delegation was to have included MEPs Emer Costello (Ireland), Margarete Auken (Denmark), Sir Robert Atkins (UK) as well as MEPs from Germany and France. The delegation was organized with the knowledge and support of European Parliament President Martin Shultz. more..e-mail

Bad apple narrative still rotten 57 years after Kafr Qasim Massacre
Leehee Rothschild, +972 Magazine 10/30/2013
Though individual soldiers were convicted in the 1956 Kafr Qasim Massacre, Israel s courts never even questioned why civilians were under military rule and curfews. Today, individual soldiers are still convicted of crimes but the occupation itself is never questioned and wrongdoing is dismissed as the work of bad apples.
Fifty-seven years ago, on the afternoon of October 29, 1956, an Israeli Border Police unit shot to death 49, men, women and children from Kafr Qasim as they returned home from a day of work in the fields.
Kafr Qasim, located in central Israel s Triangle area, was under military rule like most Palestinian villages and towns at the time. From 1949 until 1966 Palestinian citizens of Israel were governed under martial law that limited their movement, and subjected them to curfews, administrative detention and expulsions. The Israeli Border Police, a unit within the IDF at the time, was in charge of maintaining the military imposed law and order in Palestinian population centers.
The day of the massacre was the first day of the 1956 Suez War. Instructed to take all precautionary measures to keep the Jordanian border quiet, Border Police Central District commander Col. Issachar Shadmi decided to change the start time of the nightly curfew time to 5 p.m. The order was issued only in the early afternoon, which resulted in Palestinian farmers working their fields not hearing about the change of the curfew time. Maj. Shmual Malinki, who was in charge of one of the battalions enforcing the curfew on the ground, asked Shadmi what should be done with curfew breakers. Shadmi said, Allah Yerachmu (an Arabic blessing for the dead). Malanki passed this message to his officers, instructing them to shot to kill every person who violates the curfew. Nevertheless, out of eight officers, only one, Gabriel Dahan, carried out his order. Dahan s platoon was stationed at the entrance to Kafr Qasim. more..e-mail

Is the U.S. Losing Saudi Arabia to China?
Palestine Chronicle: 30 Oct 2013 – By Daniel Wagner and Giorgio Cafiero Saudi Arabia s declared intention to pivot away from the U.S. in foreign policy implies a shift toward Beijing, which predates both the Obama presidency and the Arab Awakening. While a full-fledged divorce from the U.S. appears highly unlikely at this juncture, there is genuine cause for concern in Washington. The Saudi government s decision has potentially profound implications regionally, as cooperation between Saudi Arabia and the U.S. has been a hallmark of the Middle East s political landscape for the past 80 years. The U.S. and Saudi Arabia have maintained a strategic partnership since World War II based on a common understanding Saudi Arabia provides the U.S. with oil and the U.S. in turn provides a security umbrella to the Kingdom. The two have for many years also shared mutual interest in containing Communism and Arab nationalism, which has led to many joint U.S.-Saudi campaigns…more

Drying up Ideological Wellsprings of Arab-Israeli Conflict
Palestine Chronicle: 30 Oct 2013 – By Nicola Nasser Gradually, awareness that de-Zionization of the US and European foreign policy as well as the internal policies of the State of Israel has become a prerequisite for peace in the Middle East is steadily taking roots in Israeli and world public opinion and consciousness. However this awareness has yet to wait for drying up the Zionist ideological wellsprings of the Arab Israeli conflict and translating it into real politics by de-Zionization of Israel and disengaging western foreign policy from its ideological attachment to Zionism. In his article published by Foreign Policy on last October 25, James Traub quoted US President Barak Obama in a speech last May, announcing a re-formulation of the war on terror, as saying: We cannot use force everywhere that a radical ideology takes root; the only alternative to perpetual war is a sustained effort to reduce the wellsprings of extremism. The wellsprings …more

Lebanon Haunted by Ghosts of Civil War
Palestine Chronicle: 30 Oct 2013 – By Ramzy Baroud Throughout the years, Lebanon s demographics have experienced periodic influx. But in the last two years, the demographic shift has become overwhelming due to the influx of Syrian refugees in desperate need of shelter. The situation is highly charged, if not perilous, considering Lebanon s unmanageable sectarian balances and the direct involvement of Lebanese parties in the brutal Syrian war. I
f not treated with utter sensitivity and political wisdom, Lebanon s shifting demographics could impact on its fractious sectarian politics. The numbers speak for themselves. According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 790,000 Syrian refugees have crossed into Lebanon since the beginning of the conflict. The number is constantly increasing, as an estimated 75,000 make the difficult journey every month. Those refugees also include tens of thousands of Palestinians who have suffered as a result of the war. Lebanon had already hosted hundreds of thousands of refugees driven…

Israel on the Lookout
Dissident Voice: 30 Oct 2013 – Throughout the years, Lebanon s demographics have experienced periodic influx. But particularly in the last two years, the demographic shift has been so overwhelming due to the flood of Syrian refugees in desperate need for shelter. The situation is highly charged, if not perilous, considering Lebanon s unmanageable sectarian balances, let alone the direct involvement of Lebanese parties in the brutal Syrian war. If not treated with utter sensitivity and political wisdom, Lebanon s vastly changing demographics will not bode well in a country of exceedingly fractious sectarian politics. The numbers speak for themselves. According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), 790,000 Syrian refugees have crossed into Lebanon since the beginning of the conflict. The number is constantly increasing, as an estimated 75,000 make the difficult journey from Syria to Lebanon every month. Those refugees also include tens of thousands of Palestinians that have borne the brunt of the war in…more
