Deal: prisoners for settlements

Palestinian Minister for Prisoners, Issa Qaraqe, stated after midnight on Wednesday, at a ceremony greeting released Palestinian prisoners in Ramallah, that the PLO would never sign a peace deal with Israel unless it secured the release of all Palestinian prisoners.
“An agreement will never be signed without freeing all prisoners,” Qaraqe said.
The release of the 26 prisoners, most of who were jailed before the Oslo Agreements, comes as part of a tripartite deal between Israel, the US and the PLO, coinciding with the return to peace negotiations in July. According to the agreement, Israel will release Palestinian prisoners in four stages over a nine-month period as a confidence-building measure for Palestinian participation in the talks. The three parties also agreed that Israel would not freeze settlement construction.
Almagor Terror Victims Association appealed the release of prisoners to the Israeli high court, claiming that the first round of releases was responsible for a recent uptick in terror emanating from the West Bank , and requested a delay of the release until the issue could be investigated further. The association also claimed that some of the prisoners were slated for release in error, as they violated the government s own standards of eligibility and had been arrested after the Oslo Agreements.
The High Court of Justice rejected the petition late Tuesday night after a rushed hearing by a panel of three justices, presided over by Deputy Supreme Court President Miriam Naor.

How did a Palestinian airplane engineer become a filmmaker?
It is because of a lot of elements. One of the most important one was love! I was in love with somebody who was not in love with me and I thought that if I become a famous filmmaker, maybe she will regret her decision one day!

Israel blocked a European Parliament humanitarian delegation from entering the Gaza Strip through Israel last week, claiming that the visit would strengthen Hamas.
The draft program of the trip, seen by +972, was scheduled to take place this week, October 27-30. The delegation was expected to enter Gaza through Israel s Erez Crossing on Monday morning after spending the night in East Jerusalem and leaving through Erez and and driving straight to Ben-Gurion Airport Wednesday. The program does not appear to include any meetings with Hamas officials; rather, the two-and-a-half-day trip was to focus on civil society and the work of UNRWA, the UN organization supporting Palestinian refugees.

Bad apple narrative still rotten 57 years after Kafr Qasim Massacre

Though individual soldiers were convicted in the 1956 Kafr Qasim Massacre, Israel s courts never even questioned why civilians were under military rule and curfews. Today, individual soldiers are still convicted of crimes but the occupation itself is never questioned and wrongdoing is dismissed as the work of bad apples.
Fifty-seven years ago, on the afternoon of October 29, 1956, an Israeli Border Police unit shot to death 49, men, women and children from Kafr Qasim as they returned home from a day of work in the fields.
Kafr Qasim, located in central Israel s Triangle area, was under military rule like most Palestinian villages and towns at the time. From 1949 until 1966 Palestinian citizens of Israel were governed under martial law that limited their movement, and subjected them to curfews, administrative detention and expulsions. The Israeli Border Police, a unit within the IDF at the time, was in charge of maintaining the military imposed law and order in Palestinian population centers.
The day of the massacre was the first day of the 1956 Suez War. Instructed to take all precautionary measures to keep the Jordanian border quiet, Border Police Central District commander Col. Issachar Shadmi decided to change the start time of the nightly curfew time to 5 p.m. The order was issued only in the early afternoon, which resulted in Palestinian farmers working their fields not hearing about the change of the curfew time. Maj. Shmual Malinki, who was in charge of one of the battalions enforcing the curfew on the ground, asked Shadmi what should be done with curfew breakers. Shadmi said, Allah Yerachmu (an Arabic blessing for the dead). Malanki passed this message to his officers, instructing them to shot to kill every person who violates the curfew.
