Don t just resign, withdraw from the negotiations altogether
Dr Fayez Rasheed, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 11/25/2013
The resignation of the Palestinian negotiating team reflects the crisis of the talks between the Palestinian Authority and the Israelis. Close to twenty sessions since 30 July concentrated mainly on Israel’s security needs; it knows how to run negotiations for its own best interests and is capable of blackmailing Palestinians, especially given that they agreed to return to the talks even without a halt to settlement expansion, which has actually increased since the end of July. The negotiations are supposed to last for nine months according to the agenda proposed by the US.
Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to freeze the latest intended settlement building in response to international disquiet doesn’t mean that he is going to cancel it. He will let the storm die down and then give the go-ahead yet again. For the negotiations, this will be business as usual.
The issue does not lie in the resignation of the negotiations team, because President Abbas can replace them with a new team if he actually accepts their resignation, which I doubt. The senior negotiator, Saeb Erekat, once said, “Life is negotiations”. The real issue lies in the option of choosing negotiations in the first place despite Israel’s refusal to accept the Palestinian refugees’ right of return, self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. The principle of negotiations was not based on the UN resolutions in these regards and was not based on stopping settlements and the 1967 borders, or negotiating the essential issues related to the essence of Palestinian rights. Unfortunately, Palestinian negotiators gave concessions gradually, until they got to the point where Israel has full control of the agenda and outcomes, which are not what the Palestinians want. However, the PA agreed to return to talks under pressure from the Americans. What’s more important, though, is that the Palestinian Authority set negotiations as the main option for itself; this was a strategic error. more..e-mail

As Kerry talks peace, Israeli settlers dispossess Palestinians
Nancy Murray, Aljazeera America 11/22/2013
The US must intercede on new settlement building in West Bank
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is trying to revive a stalled 20-year-old peace process that would put an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, given Israel’s dedication to its four-decades-old settlement agenda, Kerry seems to be on a fool’s errand.
The plan revealed on Nov. 12 for 20,000 new housing units to be built in the occupied West Bank underscores this point. If implemented, this plan could raise the number of settlers on land seized by Israel during the 1967 war to more than 700,000 up from an estimated 240,000 at the start of the peace process.
I have been to the West Bank more than a dozen times over the past 25 years and observed the steady expansion of Israel’s settlement enterprise. Even so, I was not fully prepared for the feverish surge in settlement construction that I saw earlier this month as a co-leader of a delegation organized by Interfaith Peace-Builders, an advocacy group based in Washington, D.C.The new West Bank
Traveling through the West Bank, we observed the extent to which the map of “Eretz Israel” the Greater Israel of biblical Judea and Samaria that religious settlers claim as a divine right has been imposed on Palestinian land.
Throughout this landlocked territory, Palestinians are now corralled into small enclaves by walls and watchtowers, military checkpoints, a road system that bisects their land but is off-limits to them, closed military zones and omnipresent fortress-like settlements that glower over the rural landscape. more..e-mail

The False Analogy of Syria and Palestine
Jonathan Cook, Nazareth, CounterPunch 11/25/2013
Identifying the real hypocrisy
As with many of those who express a view in the continuing debate about the wisdom of launching yet another humanitarian intervention in Syria, I have found myself under attack from those calling for more war. The charge against me and many like me is one of hypocrisy.
So where are my double standards? I have consistently objected to all western efforts to interfere militarily in the Middle East over the past decade. I have argued that all states in the Middle East, including Syria, are seen by western governments simply as chess pieces in a great game called the Battle for Oil.
But critics want to use a different stick to beat me and others who resist their on fervour for intervention. Here is how Louis Proyect, a diehard interventionist who blogs under the title The Unrepentant Marxist , sets out the accusation:
With his long time commitment to the Palestinian cause, [Cook] seems to have trouble understanding that those under attack in Homs or Aleppo have much in common with those living in Gaza. While he is obviously trained enough to understand and communicate the plight of one group of Arabs, another group gets short shrift because it is perceived
as inimical to the interests of peace.

In other words, I and many other supporters of the Palestinian cause are not being consistent in denying to the people of Syria the support we wish extended to the people of Gaza. This is an argument I hear being used with increasing frequency by the interventionists, in an effort to recruit to their cause the large numbers who back the rights of the Palestinians against decades of occupation and oppression. more..e-mail

Israel Still Holds Plenty of U.S. Cards
Norman Solomon and Abba A. Solomon, CounterPunch 11/25/2013
Overplaying Its Hand on Iran
More than ever, Israel is isolated from world opinion and the squishy entity known as the international community. The Israeli government keeps condemning the Iran nuclear deal, by any rational standard a positive step away from the threat of catastrophic war.
In the short run, the belligerent responses from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are bound to play badly in most of the U.S. media. But Netanyahu and the forces he represents have only begun to fight. They want war on Iran, and they are determined to exercise their political muscle that has long extended through most of the Washington establishment.
While it s unlikely that such muscle can undo the initial six-month nuclear deal reached with Iran last weekend, efforts are already underway to damage and destroy the negotiations down the road. On Capitol Hill the attacks are most intense from Republicans, and some leading Democrats have also sniped at the agreement reached in Geneva.
A widespread fear is that some political precedent might be set, undercutting pro-Israel leverage over U.S. government decisions. Such dread is inherent in the negative reactions from Netanyahu ( a historic mistake ), GOP lawmakers like House Intelligence Committee chair Mike Rogers ( a permission slip to continue enrichment ) and Senator Saxby Chambliss ( we ve let them out of the trap ), and Democratic lawmakers like Senate Foreign Relations Committee chair Robert Menendez ( this agreement did not proportionately reduce Iran s nuclear program ) and Senator Charles Schumer ( it does not seem proportional ). more..e-mail

A Dent in the Special Relationship
Palestine Chronicle: 25 Nov 2013 – By Jeremy Salt The agreement between the US and Iran is the best news coming out of the Middle East for some time. As Iran is not developing nuclear weapons it is not giving away too much, although it still went a long way to meeting US demands. Israel is furious. Netanyahu has done his best to prevent this point being reached and will be striving hard to make sure it goes no further. He will be appealing to Congress over the head of the president, the traditional tactic of Israeli prime ministers when they can t get their own way. Israel s lobbyists will be fully mobilizing for what is being represented as the greatest challenge to Israel in its history. This is a major blow to Israel and a well-deserved slap in the face for Netanyahu. He has lost no opportunity to humiliate the US president so there is probably…more

Iranian Nuclear Deal and US Foreign Policy Schizophrenia
Palestine Chronicle: 25 Nov 2013 – By Mark LeVine At least the Israelis can appreciate the strategy. Having faced years of stalemate on the most important foreign policy issue faced by the government, secret back-channel negotiations authorized by the Obama administration succeeded in producing enough agreement on core sticking points to launch official negotiations towards an interim agreement. The question is, in the just announced deal between Iran and the major world powers to suspend much of its nuclear program, will the agreements follow the same path as the Oslo peace process with one side using the interim period to strengthen the very processes the agreement was meant to stop until a fait accompli is produced? Or will the main parties honor the spirit of the accord and move towards a full implementation that can resolve all outstanding issues and produce a normal relationship with each other and the international community. Given Israel s actions since…more

Goliath Life and Loathing in Greater Israel Book Review
Palestine Chronicle: 25 Nov 2013 – By Jim Miles (Goliath Life and loathing in Greater Israel. Max Blumenthal, Nation Books, 2013) This is a powerfully written book, a mixture of current events, historical data, and personal anecdotal comments and stories. Throughout there are pervasive themes that clearly outline the nature of the Israeli state as it exists today. From May 2009 up to early 2013, Max Blumenthal passed many prolonged stays in the Holy Land, from which he derived this current assessment. The over-riding themes, and they all tend to intermingle within the right wing ideologies of the Netanyahu/Leiberman government, are all based on the demographic threat that Israel perceives to be the main problem and indeed acknowledges to be, and has always been seen as a problem from the earliest Zionists. While in the past there were some at least minimally effective two-country advocates, the current situation has developed into one of over-riding…more

Just Gaza Another Carter-Moment?
Palestine Chronicle: 25 Nov 2013 – By Julie Webb-Pullman Last week marked the first anniversary of the November 2012 Israeli offensive against Gaza. It would be good to be able to say that it marked the END of that offensive, but as events over past days have clearly shown, it did not. Why not? Maybe if we look to the body charged with ensuring international peace The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) it might hold some clues. Assassinations The Operation Pillar of Cloud offensive began on 14 November 2012 with the assassination of Ahmed Al-Jabari, head of Al Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas. What did the UNSC have to say about this extra-judicial killing? Nothing. The assassination of Ahmed al-Jabari by the state of Israel did not attract a single statement, let alone a UNSC Resolution condemning it unlike the assassination by Zionist terrorists on 17 September 1948 of the UN…more

Netanyahu’s Dependence on Failed Policies, Islamophobia
Palestine Chronicle: 25 Nov 2013 – By Iqbal Jassat In a desperate attempt to swing Western nations public opinion against Iran, Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu widely viewed in Muslim society as a major villain in promoting Islamophobia has yet again resorted to vile anti-Islam rhetoric. In step with an inglorious record of Zionist-colonialism, the bigotry inherent in his irrational utterances raises the specter of an ugly, emotive campaign of renewed Islam-bashing. At an event at Tel Aviv University that was also attended by French President Francois Hollande, Netanyahu contrasted progressive Israel with oppressive aspirations of radical Islam , which he claimed was attempting to take humanity back to the Dark Ages. This brazen assault is a remarkable display by a personality who arrogantly believes that the world is beholden to him. It is symbolic of the regime he leads and represents. The notion that Israel is able to do as it pleases without any accountability…more
