The downing of a Chinese balloon by the United States was a clear episode of hysteria. In fact, the US has a history of unhinged responses to perceived threats.
‘Unhinged’ describes the US well, in many ways.
Its reactions are those of a highly immature and spoilt brat, one that expects instant gratification and to always get its way. When one or both of these things don’t happen it reacts disproportionately, throwing tantrums, screaming hysterically and lashing out vindictively. It also bears grudges, being a terrible loser.
Unfortunately, there are no sings of the brat growing up and maturing. It looks like it will need a huge shock of some sort to jolt it out of its perpetual sulk.
