The last year has brought devastation to many, and sparked one of the biggest waves of pro-Palestine campaigning the UK has ever seen. As the latest escalation shows, the fight is not over yet.
We’re revisting Netpol’s ‘In Our Milions‘ report on this difficult anniversary, to ask what lessons we’ve learnt from a year of protest against genocide. What does the current situation tell us about policing in England and Wales, and what lessons have been learned for our organising?
Netpol has highlighted the cases of pro-Palestine campaigners caught up in this political attack. Ayesha Nashua, whose MP in South Wales triggered a police raid on her home. Palestinian student Dana Abuqamar was targeted after speaking to media, and her visa was revoked after a direct intervention from the Home Office. Palestine Action’s co-founder Richard Barnard, who faces terrorism charges for giving a speech at a rally, and the 10 Palestine Action campaigners who are currently in prison.
When we launched ‘In Our Millions’ in May, we were lucky to be joined by a panel of organisers and activists to discuss our findings. The video of this discussion, which maps a movement’s hopes and fears while facing intense police repression, shares inspiration and practical lessons learnt through intense campaigning. Covering key issues of police and protest tactics, the state’s attempt to divide us into ‘good’ and ‘bad’ protesters, and insightful discussions around centering collective care in our organising, the video is well worth rewatching.
