A base for the corruption of democracy

The purple finger revolution of January 2005 has proved only one thing: that the US media is capable of building something out of nothing.

By Scott Ritter

As the honeymoon period of the much-hyped 30 January elections in Iraq comes to an end amid the explosions of car bombs and continuous US military action, the harsh reality that these elections have failed to produce a government capable of governing, let alone govern in a fashion that resembles any notion of what a democracy should look like, comes crashing home.

War Pimps and Pigs At The Trough

Remarks at the “American” Israel Public Affairs Committee’s Annual Policy Conference

Yes, this past year has brought forth a dramatic shift in the political landscape of the Middle East. But this moment of transformation is very fragile and it still has committed enemies, particularly the Government of Iran, which is the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism. (Applause.)

The United States has focused the world’s attention on Iran’s pursuit of weapons of mass destruction. And along with our allies, we are working to gain full disclosure of Iran’s efforts to obtain nuclear weapons. The world must not tolerate any Iranian attempt to develop a nuclear weapon. (Applause.) Nor can it tolerate Iran’s efforts to subvert democratic governments through terrorism. (Applause.)

Release Jose Padilla

May 8 marked the third anniversary of the illegal imprisonment of Jose Padilla.

by Mike Whitney

Padilla was apprehended at O’ Hare Airport in 2002 by Federal officers under the shaky “material witness” provision and trundled off to prison. In a conspicuous effort to poison public opinion, Attorney General John Ashcroft announced on national TV that Padilla was conspiring to set off a “dirty bomb” (radioactive device) within the United Sates. To date, the government has never produced a scintilla of evidence to corroborate their spurious claims. Simply put, Padilla is innocent of all charges.

The lies that led to war

A leaked British memo, and other documents, make it clear that Bush intended all along to invade Iraq — and lied about it to the American people. The full gravity of his offense has not yet sunk in.

By Juan Cole

Why has there not been more outrage in the United States at these revelations? Many Americans may have chosen to overlook the lies and deceptions the Bush administration used to justify the war because they still believe the Iraq war might have made them at least somewhat safer. When they realize that this hope, too, is unfounded, and that in fact the war has greatly increased the threat of another terrorist attack on U.S. soil, their wrath may be visited on the president and the political party that has brought America the biggest foreign-policy disaster since Vietnam.

Coming Home

An Iraq Correspondent Living in Two Worlds

By Dahr Jamail

I find myself, against my better judgment and everything I swore I wouldn’t do, heading back to the Middle East; back to chronicle more of what’s happening there. I keep wondering how long it can go on; how long so many people in my home country will continue to ignore it, to be complicit, whether they know it or not, in our brutal occupation — so long after it was proven beyond a shadow of a shadow of a doubt that this war was illegal and based on nothing but lies.

Not a Pretty Picture

“History,” Hegel said, “is a slaughterhouse.” And war is how the slaughter is carried out.

If we believe that the present war in Iraq is just and necessary, why do we shrink from looking at the damage it wreaks? Why does the government that ordered the war and hails it as an instrument of good then ask us to respect those who died in the cause by not describing and depicting how they died?
