Pushing for a Palestinian Tahrir
Sandy Tolan, Al Jazeera3/5/2011
Feeling abandoned by their political leadership, Palestinian youth are pushing for change.
On a cool January evening at the height of Tunisia’s Jasmine Revolution, Najwan Berekdar and a few friends were sitting at a smoky caf?© in Ramallah, puffing on water pipes and strategising. “We were talking about what’s happening in Tunisia, and we decided, maybe this is the momentum – we should use it,” Berekdar remembers weeks later from her office at Sharek, a youth-oriented Palestinian NGO. “We were, like, five people. We were sitting with our laptops and we said, ‘Okay, let’s make an event.’ We wanted something to encourage people to go out.”
Within days, masses of Egyptians began filling Tahrir Square, and 27-year-old Berekdar, her friends and like-minded Palestinian youths were even more inspired. “We wanted to send this message that it is time for us to do something. And obviously we can do it. Look at other people. If they managed to do it, we can do it.”
The demonstrations these Palestinian youths helped organise were quickly banned, sometimes with clubs, by a Palestinian Authority (PA) with deep historic and political ties to the Tunisian and Egyptian dictatorships. But then other groups began forming their own demonstrations. And Berekdar and her friends, through email loops and a face-to-face “thinking group” of about 20 academics and intellectuals, organised new protests. “We were suppressed by the PA a second time and a third time,” she says. Soon Palestinian authorities began to investigate the group.
“One of our group members was called by the police, and by the intelligence, and by – I don’t know, we have four security forces, I think,” Berekdar says….. more.. e-mail

Lessons from Tunisia and Egypt
Daoud Kuttab, Ma’an News Agency3/6/2011
Many activists in Palestine believe that they are the inventors of the concept of popular uprisings in the modern Arab history. After all, many say, the Palestinian Intifada has been hailed as a shining example of an entire people rising up in unison against a ruthless aggressor.
Palestinians know very well what it means to break the barrier of fear and what it means to expose the bare chest to the live ammunition of an aggressive security regime. Clandestine youth leadership that works behind the scenes to organize and energize an entire population is something that has the signature of Palestine all over it.
Every country and every situation is different and the fight against the Tunisian dictatorship or the 30-year-old Mubarak regime is different from Palestine’s fight against a foreign military occupier which is also planting colonies and colonizers on Palestinians’ land. But despite their successes, which no doubt influenced the young leaders of the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions, Palestinians and many other peoples can learn a lot from their fellow Arab revolutionaries.
One of the first lessons Palestinians can learn from the North African uprisings is the need to keep the uprisings united in purpose, not lacking in ideological debate and without a clear individual or party leadership. The people want the downfall of the regime, a simple, powerful slogan that captured the imaginations of millions. This slogan has become the rallying cry for every popular uprising in the Arab world.
The Arab uprisings have stayed away from ideological debates, which has helped keep the circle as wide as possible. If the revolts had Islamic rhetoric, left-wing vocabulary or any other distinctively ideological narrative, it would have been divided and thus it would have been easier for ruling powers to crush them. more.. e-mail

US should welcome Arab democracy
Dalia Mogahed, Ma’an News Agency3/6/2011
If the remarkable transformations taking place across the Middle East teach us anything it is that we must unlearn all we thought we knew about this region.
Paramount on this list is the paternal notion that Arabs will get democracy when we deem them secular enough, pro-Israel enough, and sufficiently in favor of our policies in the region. The people of this region are earning self-governance through their own sacrifice and perseverance whether or not we think them fit.
The question now is how prepared is America to accept this new reality. Many fear that democracy in the Middle East risks anti-American and anti-Israeli Islamists groups coming to power. Some of these democracy skeptics argue that the United States needs to push for upgraded autocracy with different faces, hoping this will stabilize the region and subdue revolt. Many Americans are wondering how we both safeguard our interest and rebuild our credibility with publics who love our ideals but believe our actions seldom reflect them.
According to Gallup research across the region, U.S. policy makers would do well to embrace a democratic Arab world as consistent with both our interests and our values. Here is why:
1. Autocracy in the Middle East can no longer deliver stability. Whatever the short-term outcome, the long term belongs to the region’s young people, who have proven they are willing to sacrifice everything for freedom. It is impossible for an unpopular dictator to rule through physical force alone. Illegitimate rulers must rely on their people’s fear and sense of disempowerment to maintain the status quo…. more.. e-mail
