The unraveling of the police state
Sami Jamil Jadallah, Palestine Note3/6/2011
For the past few days, I have been watching live news reports of the unraveling and dismantling of Hosni Mubarak police state, with officers and commanders of the “state security service” or “amn aldwla” on the run after succeeding in shredding hundreds of millions of important files implicating the Mubarak regime in torture, cold blooded murder, invasion of privacy and abuse of citizens rights with the entire force of 1.4 million strong serving Mubarak, his cronies, business associates and his political allies. When it became clear General Ahmed Shafiq was on his way out, deliberate fires were set to offices of state security services all over the country. Citizens came to the rescue but it was too late in many instances.
Mahmoud Abbas, chairman of the PLO and president of the Palestinian Authority (his term expired more than 2 years ago) forged a close partnership with both Mubarak and General Omar Suleiman making the PA an extension of Mubarak Egypt specially when it came to Hamas, the continued siege of Gaza and reliance on security services as the backbone of the regime with Ramallah becoming not so different from Cairo’s Mubarak.
Notwithstanding what we hear about ‘state buildings” and “institutional building” the future Palestinian state if and when it comes will be nothing but a police state. This was the theme of an article I posted on 29 November 2007 ” The future Palestinian state will be nothing but a police state”, the same theme was also the subject of an article written by Aisling Byrne dated 18 January 2011 titled ” Building a police state in Palestine” that appeared in Foreign Policy.
The late Yasser Arafat was so committed to the security of Israel and committed to Oslo that he made “security services” his top priority anywhere he went. On his first visit to the UK rather than seeking substantial compensation for Palestinians for crimes committed by England under its mandate and Balfour Declaration, he could not find anything to seek support for except his security forces. — See also: Building a police state in Palestine more.. e-mail
The UNSC Veto and ‘The Israel Lobby’
Mitchell Plitnick, Palestine Note3/8/2011
It’s very clear that AIPAC is always the 800-pound gorilla in the room
Back in 2007, when John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt released their book,The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy, I disagreed with many parts of their thesis. Most of the criticisms at the time attacked the authors as anti-Semites or made straw man arguments about points the authors were not making. Thus, Christopher Toensing of MERIP and I put together an article responding to Walt and Mearsheimer in what I think was a more rational manner. I later issued an update to that article.
While not agreeing with the Walt/Mearsheimer thesis, I disagree at least as much with the two major alternatives: what I’d call the Foxman thesis, and what I’d call the Chomsky thesis.
Abe Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League wrote a book in response to Walt and Mearsheimer which offered very little beyond the same straw man arguments and insinuations of nefarious motives about the Israel Lobby authors. But Foxman’s case, separate from his critique of Walt and Mearsheimer, is that the Israel Lobby, as symbolized by the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) simply educates the public and Congress but is only one of many lobbying groups and, in the end, American Middle East policy was based on a careful analysis of American interests, which, to Foxman, are usually identical to Israeli ones.
Professor Noam Chomsky, well-known critic of American and Israeli policy, contends that the Lobby is very powerful as long as it goes along with extant US policies. That is, it does not play a significant role in determining those policies, but does close off debate and discussion about it. more.. e-mail
Libya and the Return of Humanitarian Imperialism
Jean Bricmont, CounterPunch3/8/2011
The Old Gang’s All Here
The whole gang is back: The parties of the European Left (grouping the “moderate” European communist parties), the “Green” José Bové, now allied with Daniel Cohn-Bendit, who has never seen a US-NATO war he didn’t like, various Trotkyist groups and of course Bernard-Henry Lévy and Bernard Kouchner, all calling for some sort of “humanitarian intervention” in Libya or accusing the Latin American left, whose positions are far more sensible, of acting as “useful idiots” for the “Libyan tyrant.”
Twelve years later, it is Kosovo all over again. Hundred of thousands of Iraqis dead, NATO stranded in an impossible position in Afghanistan, and they have learned nothing! The Kosovo war was made to stop a nonexistent genocide, the Afghan war to protect women (go and check their situation now), and the Iraq war to protect the Kurds. When will they understand that all wars claim to have humanitarian justifications? Even Hitler was “protecting minorities” in Czechoslovakia and Poland.
On the other hand, Robert Gates warns that any future secretary of state who advises a US president to send troops into Asia or Africa “must have his head examined”. Admiral Mullen similarly advises caution. The great paradox of our time is that the headquarters of the peace movement are to be found in the Pentagon and the State Department, while the pro-war party is a coalition of neo-conservatives and liberal interventionists of various stripes, including leftist humanitarian warriors, as well as some Greens, feminists or repentant communists.
So, now, everybody has to cut down his or her consumption because of global warming, but NATO wars are recyclable and imperialism has become part of sustainable development. more.. e-mail
Graffiti History of Palestine
Palestine Monitor: 8 Mar 2011 – When 2006’s elections split Gaza and the West Bank politically, Anas Maraqa was looking at a pictorial battle between Hamas and Fateh. Then it hit him. “They were telling their peoples’ opinions in graffiti,” Maraqa said, puffing a cigarette. “I was like wow, this is really saying something.” “We want to make the book from the first intifada until today,” Maracas said, outlining a plan of following a time-line linking events to their symbols called History of Palestine Through Graffiti . “There is lots of things from words written on walls – people get shot, things happened in Palestine, outside Palestine.” “it’s all on the walls.” In the First Intifada, for example, freedom fighters wrote messages to stir the masses, Maraqa said, while just two years ago a Dutch company charged ‚Ǩ30 to paint custom designs uploaded from anywhere in the world “It used to be a way for Palestinians to…more
Protecting Palestinian Susya
Palestine Monitor: 8 Mar 2011 – March 5, 2011. Al Tawamin End of winter, early spring: the hills of south Hebron are a shocking green. It won’t last long. Very soon now, unless there’s one last burst of rain, green will revert to the usual palette of yellow and brown; already the sun is strong, a taste of the fierce summer to come. The rocky trails are white with asphodels in full bloom—what the Palestinians call ghosalan and the Jews call irit . On the drive down we pass dozens of almond trees, another white miracle, in their short spring flowering. I am so glad to be back, to be outside in the air and light and not at my desk, to be with these people again, to act. We wind our way slowly uphill over the rocks, a long early-morning walk. We pass a herd of sheep and goats, with their lone Palestinian shepherd; here, on…more
Is Israel Ready for the New Middle East?
Palestine Chronicle: 8 Mar 2011 – By Yacov Ben Efrat It so happens that the week of the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia was also a week of internal Israeli shenanigans. Defense Minister Ehud Barak resigned from the Labor Party and established a faction called “Independence,” into which he drew four other Laborites. The move, coordinated with PM Binyamin (“Bibi”) Netanyahu, enabled Barak to avoid being overthrown in upcoming Labor elections. It also enabled the Netanyahu government to stay afloat, supported now by Independence. The Labor ministers had long been threatening a pullout over the lack of progress toward peace. They made good on the threat, but with little result. Thanks to Independence, the government now seemed unshakeable. The Barak-Netanyahu ploy came after heavy Democratic losses in the US Congressional elections, which impel US President Barack Obama to concentrate on domestic issues. Where the Palestinians were concerned, Bibi and Ehud could heave a sigh of relief. The…more
A Comment on Saeb Erekat’s Statement in the Palestine Chronicle
Palestine Chronicle: 8 Mar 2011 – By Issa Khalaf In the Palestine Chronicle comments by Dr. Saeb Erekat, (‘ Palestine Papers Revealed Nothing: A Response to Ramzy Baroud ‘), he writes, “The issues discussed were mechanisms by which Palestinian rights would be realized, rather than forfeited‚Ķ” I suppose he’s correct in a technical sense. That is, Palestinians were stuck since Oslo in a “peace process” industry that suited both Washington and Israel for obvious reasons. The industry’s essence was subsuming, or substituting, peace’s basis or components for endless talks about getting to peace, of form over substance—hence Erekat’s mechanisms. But how else to characterize these talks except as negotiations, or the Palestine Papers, in fact, revealing reality as we’ve all known it? No analyst would describe the Palestinian-Israeli talks during 2008, a period that apparently is particularly damning judging by the Palestine Papers, merely as mechanisms or exploratory just because they are dubbed as such or even entered…more
Here It Comes to Save the Day!
Dissident Voice: 8 Mar 2011 – Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor under Clinton, speaks of real progressive economic change and how to restore the relevancy of the Democratic Party. His points on the former would almost make one think there’s a shred of socialism in his DNA. Perhaps so, but there’s a gaping hole in his genome sequence; his reliance on the Democratic Party to achieve equity and fairness in our economic woes of today. The tax code today, given to us by both the Democrats and Republicans, in Congress and in the White House, favors the filthy rich and the corporations. It is ironic that the last time the wealthy had to pay their fair share was during the Eisenhower administration, where the tax rate on the highest earners was 91%. Today, it is they who have complete control over who pays for their lifestyle. The last time the Democratic Party had a spine…more
Bradley Manning Is Punished for Seeking a More Perfect Union
Dissident Voice: 8 Mar 2011 – Reports that Bradley Manning is being held nude every night at the Quantico Brig, then forced to stand naked in the hallway while he waits for his clothes, shows the inconsistency of the treatment of Manning with basic American values of due process, fair trial and human dignity. Here is how his lawyer, David Coombs, describes his treatment: The Brig has stripped PFC Manning of all of his clothing for the pastthree nights, and theyintend to continue this practice indefinitely. Each night, Brig guards force PFC Manning to relinquish all of his clothing. He then lies ina cold jail cell naked until the following morning, when he is required toendure the humiliation of standingnaked at attention for the morning roll call. According to Marine spokesperson, First Lieutenant Brian Villiard, the decision to strip him naked every night is forPFC Manning’sown protection. Villiard stated that it would be ‘inappropriate’ to explain…more
Could Pariah Status Spell the End for Zionism?
Dissident Voice: 8 Mar 2011 – Definition: Pariah — a social outcast (Chambers Dictionary) One eminent Israeli who apparently thinks the answer could be yes is Ilan Baruch, a veteran diplomat who resigned ahead of his retirement because, he said, he could no longer represent his government’s “wrong” policy. He also ridiculed Zionism’s assertion that global anti-Israeli sentiments generated by occupation are a manifestation of anti-Semitism. While serving as a tank platoon commander on the Suez Canal front, Baruch lost an eye and, Dayan-like, he wears a black eye-patch. His 30 years of service with Israel’s foreign ministry included postings to Singapore, Copenhagen and London and he served as ambassador to the Philippines and South Africa. In September 1993 he travelled with Prime Minister Rabin to Washington for the ceremony on the White House lawn which ended with the historic handshake after the signing of an interim agreement. (Prior to that trip, Baruch would have known…more
