Netanyahu’s Illusory Peace Plan
Jonathan Cook, Nazareth, CounterPunch3/9/2011
Israel Cornered on Every Front
Benjamin Netanyahu’s advisers conceded last week that the Israeli prime minister is more downcast than they have ever seen him. The reason for his gloominess is to be found in Israel’s diplomatic and strategic standing, which some analysts suggest is at its lowest ebb in living memory.
Netanyahu’s concern was evident at a recent cabinet meeting, when he was reported to have angrily pounded the table. “We are in a very difficult international arena,” the Haaretz newspaper quoted him telling ministers who wanted to step up settlement-building. “I suggest we all be cautious.”
A global survery for Britain’s BBC published on Monday will have only reinforced that assessment: Israel was rated among the least popular countries, with just 21 per cent seeing it in a positive light.
A belated realisation by Netanyahu that he has exhausted international goodwill almost certainly explains — if mounting rumours from his office are to be believed — his mysterious change of tack on the peace process.
After refusing last year to continue a partial freeze on settlement-building, a Palestinian pre-requisite for talks, he is reportedly preparing to lay out an initiative for the phased creation of a Palestinian state.
Such a move would reflect the Israeli prime minister’s belated recognition thatcook Israel is facing trouble on almost every front. more.. e-mail
Israel and milking America
Sami Jamil Jadallah, Palestine Note3/8/2011
Ehud Barak, the Israeli defense minister in Bibi Netanyahu’s government announced to the Wall Street Journal that Israel would seek $ 20 Billions in upgrade for its already existing $3.2 Billions annual defense grants. It seems the Arab winds of freedom and democracy is another chance for Israel to milk the US cow for more money. That should not be a big problem since the US Congress with its Republican leadership and with some one like Eric Cantor representing Tel-Aviv and not Richmond, VA in the American Knesset West will surely help in this regard. If the toppling of dictatorships in Tunisia and Egypt is worth $20 Billions for Israel, one has to wonder what the price the US has to pay Israel for a regime change in Libya, Yemen, or Syria?
Over the years, and since the US began to sponsor Israel, its wars, its occupation, its economic development, its settlements, its immigration policy, its ethnic cleansings, its house demolition, its targeted killings, its land and water theft, the US has contributed some $120 Billions so far and counting. The total costs to the US for its support of Israel and if we are to include the War on Iraq, sponsored by the Israeli lobby and the costs in terms of boycotts and oil prices, the costs jump to over $ 3 Trillions, the same amount of the US deficits.
With the US in deep financial trouble with both the president and Congress pledging substantial budget reduction specially in domestic programs, and with a promise from Obama in his State of the Union message to carefully look at every line item in the budget and “eliminate programs we can’t afford and don’t work” one has to wonder how Obama will review the new Israeli demand and how he will weigh his chance of re-election if he refuses to do so? more.. e-mail
Politics of Heritage in Palestine: Conflict between Two Narratives
Nassar Ibrahim, Alternative Information Center3/2/2011
Political dimensions and motives occupy a great space in their relation and interaction with various heritage fields and numerous human experiences. For every society, heritage constitutes a fundamental factor in plumbing historical and cultural depths. It expresses identity and interacts with the social, political, and environmental reality.
It also confronts the questions and challenges that a society encounters in the course of its development, where identities, nationalities, ethnicities, and particularities are formed. Heritage did not start as songs, dances, food, clothes, architecture, and archaeology. It began in response to a dire need to fulfil the material, social, and spiritual needs of society. After it became rooted in the society, it was transformed into collective practices that, over time, became an organic part of the collective memory and behaviour.
Within this narrative, the relation between the political dimension and heritage is identified. When a society faces internal political projects or external challenges, everything that can be moved to counterbalance these challenges will be brought forth, such as history, spiritual values, and social traditions that magnify and unify the nation to point it in the direction that can best serve it.
In the case of the decades-old Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the relationship between politics and heritage becomes more vital and dangerous, as heritage in all its forms occupies a central position and plays a decisive and fundamental role in justifying and serving the political projects that are currently being executed at all levels. more.. e-mail

Prevention Of Assimilation in the Holy Land
Palestine Monitor: 9 Mar 2011 – The ultraconservative Lehava organization mounted a new campaign, issuing kashrut certification to Israeli restaurants that hire Jews, exclusively. The signs will read: “We hire Jewish workers and no enemies.” This reflects a recurring anxiety in the Orthodox Jewish community: interracial mixing. “Assimilation has forever been one of the enemies of the Jewish people,” Baruch Marzel said . Marzel is an outspoken member of the ultraconservative Lehava Organization. He has huge, wiry black beard and wears a yarmulke. Marzel is originally from Boston, MA, but immigrated to Israel at a young age. In the far right Jewish community, Marzel is an important player. Israel’s Counterproductive Spin Machine
Palestine Chronicle: 9 Mar 2011 – By James Gundun, Washington, D.C. Sharing a boat as they float through the Middle East’s ongoing transformation, Israel has faced the same crunch-time decision as America – ride the movement out in front or try to decelerate it from behind. While U.S. officials mix selective optimism with silence in an attempt to slow revolutions to a manageable speed, Israel has gone virtually silent as the region flips beneath it. A common concern in Washington is that two months just undid 20 years of counter-terrorism policies. Israel suffers from the same anxiety. These worries notwithstanding, the isolated allies also enjoy an equal opportunity to reverse course and support a field of democratic movements. They did, after all, inspire the oppressed to rise up by suppressing them, and most peoples haven’t outright rejected U.S. involvement. Contrary to the notion that America should “keep it about them,” a defense adopted by some Washington…more
Obama Has to Move Faster
Palestine Chronicle: 9 Mar 2011 – By George S. Hishmeh – Washington, D.C. Where is Barack Hussein Obama? Why hasn’t he done anything sooner and tangible to reassure the hundreds of thousands of freedom fighters marching in the Arab streets, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Arabian Gulf? The admirable new Arab generation has so far been successful in overthrowing two long-ruling Arab dictators, the first in Tunisia and the second in Egypt within weeks of each other. And, there is no doubt, that other Arab autocrats will be next in line, most prominently Moammar Qaddafi of Libya, who has been labeled correctly by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as “delusional.” More recently, he has been described as “crazy” (by a prominent Arab journalist Jihad Khazen) and even “lunatic” by American journalists. Many others see him as a “murderous” despot following the rumored bloodbaths that the Libyan air force has inflicted on the protestors or…more
The Last Victory of Muammar Gaddafi
Dissident Voice: 9 Mar 2011 – On March 6, 2010 it became clear that the Libyan regime has defeated the internal uprising and suspended the chaotization of the Arab world. A routine clandestine mission by a British diplomat protected by 8 SAS officers to the eastern base of Libyan opposition ended up with their detention and ‘interrogation’ by the rebel leaders. The Sunday Times report about it in reality signified the ‘white flag’ hoisted by the organizers of the 2010-2011 Middle East and North Africa protests . From the very beginning the chain of events in Libya has taken an unexpected turn for global elites. Muammar Gaddafi refused to abandon Tripoli and together with his family and clan members was keeping permanent contact with the Libyans through national TV and regular public appearances. During his impressive speech on February 22, 2011 he managed to restore public support and encouraged Libyans to resist the revolution. Since then the…more
