RAF provides air support for rebels
On Monday, Libyan rebels entered the city Zlitan, 160 kilometers east of Tripoli, reports the British newspaper the Guardian.
…
Close air support provided by the Royal Air Force assisted the rebels in their attack.
As a result of the air-strikes on the neighborhoods of Zlitan, the way was cleared for the opposition forces. NATO Forces destroyed rocket launchers, tanks, weapons depots and command centers belonging to Gaddafi’s faithful units.
However, as the newspaper notes, despite the capture of tanks and heavy artillery, ‘the forces of the opposition are too lightly armed to count on a rapid advance on Tripoli.’

France gives 259-mln-USD Libyan assets to rebels
PARIS: France has unlocked 259 million U.S. dollars of previously frozen Libyan assets for Libyan opposition body, the Transition National Council (TNC), the foreign ministry announced Monday.
‘The Minister of State announced to his interlocutor that the process of unlocking Libyan funds succeed and has made the TNC available to the sum of 259 million US dollars,’ said a statement issued by the ministry.
Earlier in the day, French Foreign Minister, also the Minister of State Alain Juppe, hold a meeting with Mansour Seyf Al-Nasr, the TNC special envoy to France, who was regarded by France ‘a sign of closeness and trust that characterize relations between France and the TNCT.’
…
France previously called Al-Nasr the ambassador of Libya and in the statement allowed him to move into the residence of the Libyan embassy in Paris.
…
France took the lead to recognize the TNC as the sole legitimate representative of the Libyan people in March and set up close ties with the rebel body. The United States and Britain followed suit to recognize the TNC in July.

Thaci’s Enforcers: NATO Removes Serb Barricades In Kosovo

NATO Forces Clear Kosovo Barricades
NATO forces have removed some of the barricades put up by Serbs in northern Kosovo after a trade dispute escalated into deadly violence last week, but other roadblocks still remain.
The alliance removed several roadblocks Monday that impeded access to NATO bases in northern Kosovo. It is unclear how many roadblocks are still in place.
Also Monday, the head of Belgrade’s negotiating team, Borislav Stefanovic, and Serbian Minister for Kosovo Goran Bogdanovic met with Serb representatives in the northern Kosovo town of Zvecane. The move is widely seen as a further act of defiance to Kosovo’s claim to statehood.
Last week, special forces of Kosovo’s ethnic-Albanian government seized two border crossings in Serb-dominated northern regions to enforce a ban on imports from Serbia. Kosovo’s government imposed the ban last month in retaliation for Serbia’s blocking of Kosovo imports.
Northern Kosovo Serbs confronted ethnic-Albanian security forces last Monday, triggering an exchange of gunfire that killed one ethnic Albanian policeman and wounded several other people. NATO peacekeepers intervened, taking control of the two border posts on Thursday under an agreement with the Kosovo government, which pulled out its special police. After the police withdrew, a mob of Serb attackers set fire to one border post and fired on NATO peacekeepers sent to quell the violence.

The violence in northern Kosovo was one of the most serious incidents in the region since Kosovo seceded from Serbia in 2008,

BBC asks Nato to investigate reporter’s death
The BBC has asked Nato to investigate the death of one of its journalists in Afghanistan after reports suggested foreign forces could have been involved.
Ahmed Omed Khpulwak, 25, was one of 19 people killed in attacks on 28 July on Tarin Kot, the provincial capital of Uruzgan province in the south of the country last week.
The Taliban were initially blamed for his death, but there have since been claims that Afghan government troops or Nato forces may have been responsible.
The BBC has now made an official request for the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) in Afghanistan to carry out an urgent inquiry.
The corporation said in a statement: ‘Following the death of BBC stringer Ahmed Omed Khpulwak in southern Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province last week, various conflicting reports have emerged regarding the facts surrounding his death.
‘The BBC has officially requested that the International Security Assistance Force inquires into the circumstances of his death and reports the findings to the BBC and to his family as urgently as possible.’
Khpulwak joined the BBC in May 2008 as a stringer, a freelance journalist used by a news organisation on an ongoing basis, and also worked for the Pajhwok Afghan news agency.
He was killed when local radio and television offices in Tarin Kot came under attack on 28 July.

Russians in Estonia fear Nazi revival
The Russian community in Estonia is against the government’s attempts to rehabilitate former Nazi SS collaborators, saying that it ignores the Nuremberg Trial by encouraging the meetings of SS veterans in the country.
Recently, they met in the town of Sinemae near the Russian border and decided to demand welfare, calling themselves ‘fighters for freedom’.

Union of ethnic Russians in Estonia protest attempts to rehabilitate former SS officers
TALLINN: The Coordination Council of Russian Compatriots in Estonia (KSRS) has voiced its opposition to attempts to rehabilitate former Schutzstaffel (SS) officers.
‘The Council resolutely protests the authorities’ continued attempts to rehabilitate former SS officers by calling them ‘fighters for Estonia’s freedom,’ contrary to the decisions of the Nuremberg trials, other international documents, as well as a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly,’ the KSRS said in a statement obtained by Interfax on Monday.
‘It is particularly woeful that events such as the meeting of the veterans of the 20th SS division in Sinimea are supported and attended by statesmen and leaders of various levels,’ it said.
‘Also worthy of condemnation is that skinheads and nationalists from the adjacent states conduct an active propaganda at this event,’ the statement said.
On Saturday, veterans from the 20th Estonian Division of the SS and their young supporters held a meeting in Sinimae, close to the Russian-Estonian border. Representatives from the Union of Pro Patria and Res Publica Party, who spoke at the meeting on behalf of Defense Minister Mart Laar, vowed to fight for the formal recognition of former SS officers as freedom fighters and for additional retirement, social, health care and other benefits for them.

MIRGOROD AIR BASE, UKRAINE – SAFE SKIES 2011 came to a close Friday after twelve days of successful flying.
Lt. Gen. Vasyl Nikiforov, Deputy Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, addressed 130 Air National Guardsmen and 200 Ukrainian Airmen who participated in SAFE SKIES 2011.
…
The men and women of the Air National Guard provided training opportunities for the Polish and Ukrainian Air Forces by completing nearly 122 intercept missions. U.S. pilots participated in scenarios that exercised the Ukrainian and Polish command and control structure by operating as if they were distressed, hijacked, lost or flying in a simulated restricted airspace. The Ukrainian and Polish forces responded accordingly and mitigated potential airborne threats.
‘Through the hard work of these Air National Guard members, we were able to fly 61 sorties during this event,’ said. Col. Scott Patten, 187th Fighter Wing Commander. ‘We were able to provide critical insight into air sovereignty operations.’
…
SAFE SKIES was a multinational aerial event designed to provide a unique opportunity for Ukrainian, Polish and American Air Forces to fly together to help prepare the Polish and Ukrainians for enhanced air supremacy and air sovereignty operations as Ukraine prepares to host the EUROCup in 2012. Through the State Partnership Program, the California Air National Guard began planning this event in 2009.

South Africa: U.S. Marines Lead Assault Drills

‘Nobody Told Me the War Wouldn’t Be Easy’
South African Soldiers and U.S. Marines Combine Forces for Simulated Assault
By Corporal Jad Sleiman
U.S. Marine Corps
GRAHAMSTOWN, South Africa: After two straight days of almost nonstop rain about 225 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers and U.S. Light Armored Reconnaissance (LAR) marines wait to begin a company-sized assault on a barren ridge populated by imaginary enemy troops and their pill boxes.
…
Exercise Shared Accord 2011, a bi-lateral military training and civil assistance mission held annually throughout Africa, has brought the two forces together.
…
By late afternoon…the dry-fire practice assault begins. Four of E Company, 4th LAR’s LAV-25s lead the charge along a pre-planned route, training their cannons at the ridgeline, but only radioing back shots and impacts.
LAR scouts have to pick a path with ample rocks and shrubs, enough to support the LAV’s massive frame, explained Major Randall Parker, E Company’s commander.
…
The S.A. infantry follow on line behind the vehicles down a two-kilometer stretch of hillside. They aim their unloaded weapons at the opposing hill before making the long hike back up to where they started. When they get there, they turn around and prepare for a live fire assault.
Breathless and sweating under their warming layers, they begin to sing:
‘Nobody told me the war wouldn’t be easy.’ Back up singers join in, repeating ‘nobody, nobody’ as a bass line.
…
A half-hour later the S.A. and U.S. forces are back on line.
‘According to our doctrine as mobile infantry, we don’t use LAVs with movement. So, this is actually quite new to us,’ said S.A. Major Denzil Sampson.
Real U.S. sniper fire and mortars signal the start of the live-fire attack as the ridgeline erupts in smoke and fire.
The S.A. follow behind the LAV-25s, which pound the ridge with cannon and machine gun fire, until they are within the effective range of their rifles and RPGs.
‘Firing positions!’ call out the S.A. company’s section leaders, and the line is singing yet again: small arms rifles pop and rattle while the medium machine guns boom. Every so often the whoosh and thump of an RPG launch and explosion echo from the company’s flanks.
…
Later that night the marines and soldiers practice a similar assault under the cover of darkness. Throughout the next week a new company of S.A. soldiers and marines will start the entire training cycle over again before the exercise concludes at the end of the month.

Russia: Putin Says U.S. ‘Lives Like Parasite Off Global Economy’

U.S. global economy ‘parasite’ – Putin
SELIGER (Tver region): The U.S. spends beyond its means and ‘lives like a parasite off the global economy,’ Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Monday.
U.S. President Barack Obama said earlier in the day he had reached a deal with Republican and Democratic leaders to raise the nation’s debt ceiling by at least $2.1 trillion and avoid a default.
The proposed legislation is expected to be put to a vote in Congress later on Monday.
Speaking at a Russian political youth camp, Putin said the U.S. exists to build up its debt by relying on credit.
‘It lives beyond its means, taxing the global economy with its problems and living like a parasite off the global economy and the monopoly of the dollar,’ he said.
At the same time, the Russian head of government admitted that in the present day situation the United States took a ‘balanced’ decision as a possible default would also have affected the global economy, which would have been ‘no good at all,’ he concluded.
