US vote a painful reminder for divided Palestinians
Sufian Abu Zaida, Ma’an News Agency 11/11/2012
I didn’t follow the United States elections due to my belief that in the Palestinian subject particularly, and US policy in the Middle East in general, the difference between the candidates is negligible.
But I followed the approach for both candidates in how they reflected their position and defended themselves, as well as the mode in which each party criticized the other. I realized why they are at the top of the pyramid and rule the world and control the fate of people, and why we are at the bottom of the gendarmerie failing even to maintain our unity.
I followed with interest Obama’s victory speech, delayed more than three hours even though everything was ready and waiting — the public, the media, and the entire world — but Obama preferred to wait for a call from his defeated rival Romney to bless his victory and wish him success in his mission.
Obama began his speech with thanks to his rival for his handling the election battle clean and clear from charges, treason phrases, defamation, and personal abuse, as we hear and read in our media every hour and every moment. Then he thanked his wife, his family, and his extended family America, where he said to the public that he became the US president because of them and re-elected, he promised that he will be president for all the people of America in all it segments, colors, ethnics and nationalities.
They are at the top of the pyramid and we are at the bottom because of the governance for the people, who choose every four years their president exactly and perfectly and not looking for excuses and justifications to evade this merit. It’s true that we are not America and not even a part of its state, but we‘re talking about a concept and how to apply it, democratic values, cultural, and moral practice. more.. e-mail

Analysis: Britain’s moral duty
Wissam Abu Zeid, Ma’an News Agency 11/11/2012
The journey that will lead to achieving membership of the UN for an independent Palestinian state has been long and troubled. It began in 1917, when UK Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour sent a letter to Walter Rothschild, a leader of the Zionist movement, promising to establish a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine, and that Britain would use its best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of this object. At that time, Palestine was under the mandate of Great Britain.
Thirty-one years later, the people of Palestine suffered one of the most painful exodus in recent history. More than 800,000 Palestinians were uprooted from their homes, villages and cities after a series of massacres carried out by Zionist militias such as the Irgun, the Stern gang and the Haganah.
After World War II, Folke Bernadotte was unanimously chosen to be the UN Security Council mediator in the Arab-Israeli conflict of 1947-1948. He was assassinated in Jerusalem in 1948 by the Stern gang’s Lehi group while pursuing his official duties. The decision to assassinate him had been taken by Natan Yellin-Mor, Yisrael Eldad and Yitzhak Shamir, who was later to become prime minister of Israel.
On the morning of Nov. 29, 1947, and against the will of the Palestinian people, the General Assembly in New York voted for the partition of Palestine and accepted Resolution 181. It was supported by 33 votes with 13 opposed and 10 abstentions including Britain, whose prime minister, Clement Attlee, saw to it that Britain’s Commonwealth partners voted for it.
Palestine was thus divided into 3 parts: a Jewish part, a Palestinian part and an internationally administered zone to include the city of Jerusalem as a corpus separatum to be administered by the United Nations. After 10 years, a referendum would be held to seek the views of the city’s residents. Today, that referendum is dead history. more.. e-mail

Mind the borders
Ahmed Eleiba, Al-Ahram Weekly 10/25/2012
The question of Gaza’s border crossings — especially Rafah — comes again to the fore as Hamas rejects Ramallah’s offer of ending the siege in return for a controlling role.
No one can be certain today that Hamas and its government are solid. Both the group and its government are suffering internal struggles, and the repercussions of the Arab Spring have upset the balance of power within the group and government. They are both going through a difficult transition for which politburo elections could be a factor for stability.
At the same time, it is not certain if inter-Palestinian reconciliation between Hamas and rival Fatah is possible in the near future, since there are many signs that disputes are deeper than before. Meanwhile, Hamas in the Gaza Strip may be seeking to become a self-governing authority. In an exclusive interview, Mahmoud Al-Zahhar said as much, stating that, “Any inch of land occupied in 1948 that is liberated can be considered a temporary Palestinian state.”
Al-Zahhar as usual blamed Fatah for not achieving reconciliation, saying, “Hamas boycotted local elections within this context since Fatah nominated its members and those close to the group, and ignored Hamas supporters in the West Bank. That is why we are boycotting these elections and do not view them as legitimate.” The Hamas leader further revealed that Cairo was about to officially recognise the Gaza Strip and its government.
The most recent spat occurred when the Hamas government in Gaza rejected the proposal by its counterpart in the West Bank — the Palestinian Authority (PA) — offering to ease the six-year siege on Gaza. This would come as part of a deal making the PA responsible for overseeing border crossings without directly or indirectly dealing with Ismail Haniyeh’s government, in return for Israel lifting the siege altogether. The offer is the culmination of efforts by PA Foreign Minister Riad Al-Maliki who received a green light from world powers that put pressure on Israel, which wants the PA to return to power in Gaza but without reconciliation, according to Al-Zahhar. more.. e-mail
