Palestine entangled: The politics of money
Ramzy Baroud, Ma’an News Agency 11/10/2012
In Malaysia, a small group of community activists are busy at work developing projects that benefit most vulnerable members of Palestinian society in Gaza.
Working under the umbrella of Viva Palestina Malaysia (VPM), the group shows solidarity through empowerment projects such as interest free loans for micro projects, providing employment for women, supplying thousands of solar lamps aimed at ending the persistent darkness for many families, and more.
The overall value of the combined efforts of VPM is important, because it is long-lasting. But equally important, the channeled funds are not part of a political scheme nor are aimed to exact concession. This can hardly be said of many of the relationships between Palestinian leadership and society, and outside funds, which began pouring in, with a clear political manual that has been dutifully followed by those who provide the funds and those who receive them.
That relationship was once more a subject of discussion following the recent visit by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, emir of Qatar to Gaza, which has been under an Israeli siege since Hamas’ victory in the general elections of 2006. The siege became complete in 2007, when Hamas clashed with its rival Fatah, perceived by Israel and the US as ‘moderate’.
Al Jazeera said the emir’s arrival to Gaza was to “to inaugurate a Qatari investment project worth hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild the impoverished and overcrowded coastal enclave.” Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh interpreted the visit on a grander scale: “The visit of the emir announces officially the breaching of the political and economical siege imposed on Gaza for more than five years.” more.. e-mail

Palestinian right of return: Abu Mazen gave up? So what?
Michael Warschawski, Alternative Information Center 11/5/2012
In the colonial context of the Israeli mind, every Palestinian step backwards strengthens the position of those, who today represent the majority in Israel, who aspire to destroy Palestine. The history of the past three decades of negotiations demonstrates beyond any doubt that in the present relation of forces, compromises lead to additional pressures and to even more compromises. The only efficient counter-strategy should be: no compromise at all on our rights, even if it may take years to achieve freedom and return. Change the relation of forces and then negotiate, otherwise it is not a negotiation but a mere diktat.
In an interview to Israeli Chanel 2, Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas declared that he renounces his right to return back to the city of Safed, where he was born and from where he was expelled and became a refugee. In fact, the Palestinian president expressed more than a personal declaration; as in several previous occasions, Abu Mazen attempted to calm Israeli public opinion on the central issue of Palestinian refugee rights, and to reduce the Israeli-Palestinian conflict into a conflict over territory, borders and sovereignty.
While the Israeli right will not be seduced by Abbas’ statement, the left will attempt to use it to show that the Palestinian leadership takes into consideration the Israeli fear of a “demographic threat” and accepts Israel as a Jewish state.
While Abu Mazen has the right to give up his dream to return to Safed and even to live in Tel Aviv (if and when Israeli laws will permit it), he cannot speak on behalf of millions of other refugees who have never abdicated this right. This is so for three main reasons: first, the right to return and to get back one’s property is an individual right, and each and every Palestinian will decide what to do with his/her stolen property, as well as if s/he intends to live on that property, to rent it or to sell it. Second, the right of return is a fundamental human right. Third, the right of return of the Palestinian refugees is part of international law and recognized by several UN resolutions…. more.. e-mail

Fatah’s mediocre victory
Khaled Amayreh in occupied Hebron, Al-Ahram Weekly 10/25/2012
With conspicuous low turnout, Fatah won in lacklustre fashion in largely uncontested local elections.
In the absence of Hamas and with visibly low voter turnout, Fatah, the political backbone of the Western-backed Palestinian Authority (PA) and the party of PA President Mahmoud Abbas, won an uneasy victory in partial local and municipal elections in the West Bank.
Nonetheless, Fatah leaders hailed “the huge victory”, saying it amounted to a referendum on Chairman Abbas’s policies, especially with regard to the moribund peace process with Israel.
The group’s mediocre achievement was marred by a drastically low participation, especially in large towns such as Hebron, Nablus and Ramallah where no more than 35 per cent of registered voters cast their votes.
In Hebron, a city of more than 250,000 people, voter turnout was phenomenally low, not exceeding 33 per cent of registered voters. According to Akram Natscheh, a local journalist, public apathy was conspicuous in the southern populous West Bank city.
“We noticed from the very beginning there was a lot of indifference on the part of the people.”
Fatah as expected won 10 seats in the 15-seat council.
Another observer, Imad Kawasmeh, said many people voted for Fatah‘s list out of clan solidarity.
“Many voters voted for their relatives not because they were infatuated with Fatah or the Palestinian Authority. They did so because they simply wanted the son of the clan be a winner.” more.. e-mail
