In Gaza, my son asks, what do the Israelis want from us?
Rami Almeghari, Gaza Strip, Electronic Intifada 11/15/2012
“What do they want from us? What do they want from us?” — this is the question posed to me by my son Munir who is now 13 years old. I had just returned from touring nearby towns here in Gaza out of journalistic duty on the second day of Israel’s massive military attacks.
Since the Israeli assassination of a top Hamas military commander yesterday afternoon, I have been following up on the news, reporting and writing the story of 13-year-old Ahmad Abu Daqqa, who was fatally shot in the stomach by an Israeli soldier last week while he played football outside his home in Khan Younis.
Munir and Ahmad are both schoolboys and each have a hobby. Ahmad was a football fan, while Munir is interested in news like his father. Whenever Munir approaches me, it’s inevitably to tell me some news or inquire about something.
Both Ahmad and Munir have spent their childhoods in the harsh, intolerable conditions in Gaza. As they were both similar in age and in terms of living conditions, they surely had the same question: ” What do they want from us?”
Ahmad has already got the answer. He was killed last Thursday by an Israeli bullet that ripped through his little body.
Meanwhile, Munir is outraged by the intensity of Israeli air strikes on Gaza, worried for the safety of his brother, two sisters, mother and other family members whenever a loud explosion is heard nearby. He wanted an authentic answer from his journalist father.
I wracked my mind for an answer that he could understand. more.. e-mail

House demolitions exploit the powerless in Area C
Rabbi Arik Ascherman, +972 Magazine 11/14/2012
There is no possibility that Israel’s Civil Administration will fairly and properly plan for Palestinians in Area C if they are not at the table when their fate is decided.
Last Thursday, the bulldozers demolished Beit Arabiya, for the sixth time. On Wednesday, two homes were demolished in Dirat, a village that is appealing with Rabbis for Human Rights (RHR) to the High Court against discriminatory planning in Area C. Additional homes and structures were demolished over the past week in Al-Waya, A-Tur, Ein al Hilwe, Ibziq, Nabi Samuel, Hares and more. The only crime of the Shawamreh family is that, after having spent great sums of money and taken every possible measure to get a legal building permit, they have been forced to build without a permit. There is no legitimate planning, security or other reason whatsoever for not granting the permit. The only reason is that the Israeli army, which has sole control over planning for Palestinians in Area C (60% of the West Bank), makes it almost impossible for Palestinians to get a building permit there.
Demolitions continue while there is a High Court petition pending hearing – a petition that will raise arguments about the patently obvious discrimination, the axiomatic principle that people must have a say in the procedures and decisions that so drastically impact on their lives (and we will prove just how devastating that impact is). From both a human rights and from a Jewish perspective, it is hard to think of a more justified appeal.
But, the real reason is the bulldozers. When I will walk into the courtroom the faces of Salim, Arabiyah and their children will be like frontlets before my eyes.
And they won’t be the only faces. The midrash to the week’s Torah portion in the time of the demolitions teaches us of the toll that trauma takes…. more.. e-mail

’It’s time for Palestinians in Israel to stand firm against the Bantustan plan of Oslo’
Jonathan Cook, Israeli Occupation Archive 11/14/2012
The following interview was conducted in Nazareth with Awad Abdel Fattah, secretary general of the National Democratic Assembly party. The NDA (Al-Tajamoa in Arabic, and Balad in Hebrew) is one of three parties in the Israeli parliament representing Israel’s Palestinian minority, which numbers 1.4 million and comprises nearly a fifth of the country’s population.
The NDA is best known for the activities of its former leader, Azmi Bishara, who was forced into exile in 2007 after Israel’s domestic intelligence agency, the Shin Bet, accused him of assisting Hizbullah during Israel’s 2006 attack on Lebanon. No proof has so far been forthcoming.
Although the NDA has three legislators in the 120-seat parliament, the Knesset, both the party and its former leader have faced a relentless campaign of intimidation and persecution from the Israeli security services over many years. There have also been efforts at each national election to have the party disqualified from running.
The election due this January is no exception: even at this early stage, petitions have been submitted to the Central Elections Committee from senior legislators to ban the party and two of its Knesset members, Haneen Zoabi and Jamal Zahalka.
The NDA’s chief point of friction with the Israeli establishment is over its campaign for “a state for all its citizens”, its demand that Israel be reformed into a liberal democracy. This has been classified as “subversive activity” by the Shin Bet.
This interview followed the recent publication by Abdel Fattah of a booklet in Arabic arguing both that the Palestinians inside Israel need to take a more central role in rebuilding the Palestinian national movement and that it is time for Palestinians to turn away from the illusions of the Oslo process and develop their thinking about a one-state solution. more.. e-mail

Netanyahu’s government has quietly doubled funding for settlements, says finance minister
Chaim Levinson, Haaretz, Israeli Occupation Archive 11/12/2012
Move was done quietly so that ‘elements in Israel and abroad’ would not attempt to prevent it, Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz tells radio interviewer.
Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has quietly doubled the portion of Israel’s national budget allocated to Jewish settlements in the West Bank settlements, Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said in an interview on Monday.
“During the current government’s term, we doubled the budgets [allocated] to Judea and Samaria. We did it with a low profile, in agreement with the mayors,” Steinitz told Galei Yisrael, a regional radio station based in the West Bank.
The government carried out the moves quietly, so that “elements in Israel and abroad” would not attempt to stymie them, he added.
Steinitz, who on Monday afternoon received an award from the settlement movement honoring him for his contributions, related to interviewer Kaveh Shafran how he had helped the settlements.
“We are funding three cultural centers in Judea and Samaria – in Ariel, Ma’aleh Adumim and Kiryat Arba. We’ve helped the Jordan Valley. We’ve helped the Jewish community in Hebron. Because of my decision to give a special allocation to establish the university in Ariel, despite enormous pressure from the [other] universities against it, the way was paved to getting the Council of Higher Education’s approval.”
Steinitz also discussed the recent wave of rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip, saying that the cross-border escalation was part of a comprehensive Palestinian move against Israel. “Strategically, what’s happening is that we’re under a double Palestinian offensive. A terror offensive from Gaza, and from Ramallah a diplomatic offensive by Abu Mazen, which is also strategic, to approach the UN.” — See also: Source: Haaretz more.. e-mail

Against forgetting: An interview with Eyal Sivan
Charlotte Silver, Al Jazeera.com 11/12/2012
Filmmaker Eyal Sivan talks about his exhibit with over 100 testimonies given by the perpetrators of the Nakba.
Last month in Tel Aviv an exhibit with an unprecedented intention debuted. Curated by two prominent anti-Zionist Israelis, filmmaker Eyal Sivan and historian Ilan Pappe, “Towards a Common Archive” presents over 100 testimonies given by the perpetrators of the Nakba, the period between 1947 and 1949 when over 750,000 Palestinians were expelled from their land to create the state of Israel. The exhibit is hosted by Zochrot, the sole Israeli organisation dedicated to remembering the Nakba.
Sivan describes their project as racing against time, as it collects testimonies from the ageing generation that fought with the Zionists gangs. In the absence of a formal Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Sivan envisages the perpetrators’ historic testimonies as forming a basis for truth without which a future reconciliation could not occur.
Yet despite the significance of the undertaking – and to the surprise of Sivan – the Israeli press has completely ignored the exhibit, save for one right-wing settler newspaper which disparaged it.
The exhibit serves as a pilot for a much larger project envisioned by Eyal Sivan: A Common Archive for 1948 Palestine, which seeks to build an interactive website bringing together the testimonies of Palestinian refugees and the Zionist perpetrators of the Nakba. If successful in documenting 1948, Sivan hopes to see subsequent historical events in the region also documented on the forum. But for him, it is essential that such a process begin with the Nakba: Sivan believes everything that has happened since represents “repeated episodes of that initial crime”. more.. e-mail
