New book by Tel Aviv historian uncovers ‘Land of Israel’ myths
Asa Winstanley, London, Electronic Intifada 1/28/2013
Shlomo Sand is a history professor at Tel Aviv University. His charismatic, readable style was evident in his previous book The Invention of the Jewish People, the English edition of which kicked up quite a controversy in 2009. The title alone seemed designed to shock.
But in fact Sand was arguing a fairly banal truism: there is no such thing as a unified, national “Jewish people.” As a globalized religious community (due to proselytizing before the rise to power of Christianity in the fourth century) there are instead multiple different Jewish communities across the world.
A Jew from Yemen would have no distinctive secular points of reference in common with a Jew from France, Russia or Poland. For example: before Zionist reinvention from the end of the 19th century, Hebrew was a purely liturgical language. Jews from different countries naturally spoke in local languages.
That book was a fascinating journey through centuries of Jewish history, much of it swept under the carpet by Zionist historiography. Sand’s new book, The Invention of the Land of Israel, is essentially a direct sequel, focusing on the nature of an idea central to Zionism: the “Land of Israel” — Eretz Israel in Hebrew.
Sand explains that in Israel, “in the Hebrew-language edition of foreign books, the word ‘Palestine’ is systematically replaced with the words Eretz Israel … Even when the writings of important Zionist figures such as Theodor Herzl, Max Nordau, Ber Borochov and many others [who also used ‘Palestine’] … are translated into Hebrew” (23). — See also: The Invention of the Jewish People more.. e-mail

Israel’s left turn to the far right
Jonathan Cook, Israeli Occupation Archive 1/28/2013
Much of Israeli politics is myth-making – the creation of narratives based on illusions – and the country’s election last week was no exception. Commentators have been quick to characterize the result as a dramatic upset, with the right-wing led by Benjamin Netanyahu locked in a dead-heat with the left.
In this narrative, Yair Lapid, a TV personality whose Yesh Atid party constitutes part of what Israelis describe as the “center-left bloc,” came from nowhere to win 19 seats, making his the second largest party. He took many votes, it seems, from Netanyahu’s Likud party, which won 31 seats in an an electoral pact with the far-right party of Yisrael Beiteinu. In the outgoing parliament, they had 42 seats between them.
Lapid is now the expected kingmaker. According to the mythical narrative, it lies in his hands to either join a right-wing coalition government under Benjamin Netanyahu and moderate it, or refuse the invitation and remain in a center-left opposition that will harry Netanyahu at every turn.
This was the interpretation promoted, for example, by Ari Shavit, a leading commentator with the Haaretz newspaper: “Netanyahu, it seems, will win a third term as prime minister, but he will not rule the country. His life will not be easy, not politically and not in terms of policy…This week the idiotic march of the right to the right wing of the right came to an end, and the renewed march of the right toward the center began.”
     Blow to Netanyahu

On International Holocaust Day, reminders of local racism are abundant
Ami Kaufman, +972 Magazine 1/27/2013
      Imagine this:
You’re sitting in the bleachers at a Yankee game. You brought The New York Times with you, just in case things get slow. Or at least for the seventh-inning stretch. You read about how Steinbrenner is considering buying a new player from Haiti, or the Dominican Republic.
Suddenly, you lift your head and see a huge flag hovering over the fans, written in large black print: “NO SPICKS!”
     You drop your beer, right?
Well, that’s pretty much what happened during a Beitar Jerusalem game. During a league game last night, Beitar fans rolled out a sign saying, “Beitar, pure forever,” in response to the team’s intention to hire two Muslim players from Chechnya.
Of course, the usual condemnations of politicians and other public figures came. They’re just as useful as U.S. condemnations of settlement expansions. (Even Kahanist Baruch Marzel condemned the act, showing basically any racist can hide behind kind words. Although, in his same Facebook message he promised to come to Beitar’s next game in the Arab city of Umm el Fahm. We’ll be very lucky if this goes by quietly).
I’ve written a few times about the racism of the capital city team, so it’s not really that surprising.
I guess what touches a nerve with most people is the coincidental timing of it all – today being the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. more.. e-mail

Neither one nor two states, but a federation of the Arab East
Hannu Reime, Kansan Uutiset/Viikkolehti (Finnish, Israeli Occupation Archive 1/28/2013
013, translation by Hannu Reime – Hannu Reime reviews Moshé Machover’s Israelis and Palestinians: Conflict and Resolution, Haymarket Books 2012.
Readers of Viikkolehti might remember the article-portrait of the Israeli-British mathematician and socialist dissident Moshé Machover when he visited Finland for a scientific conference more than three years ago (VL, Oct. 20, 2009). Last year, the Chicago-based progressive publisher Haymarket Books put out a collection of writings by Dr. Machover on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its various aspects. The book also presents an internationalist and socialist program that would lead to real and lasting reconciliation between Hebrew speaking Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs.
Moshé Machover belonged to the small, but “notorious” Matzpen group whose founders – Dr. Machover among them – had been thrown out of the Israeli Communist Party fifty years ago. They were accused of fractional activity, which was a code-word that covered various sins, among them a radical critique of the Soviet Union from the left, which was regarded as the worst kind of blasphemy in the Stalinist CPs at the time. The group began to publish a Hebrew monthly Matzpen (compass), and a few months later established the Israeli Socialist Organization, which came to be known by the name of its paper. Matzpen was soon joined by other Israeli citizens, both Jews and Arabs, altogether less than a hundred.
As an organization and a monthly, Matzpen existed for twenty years. People who belonged to its non-Leninist mainstream are still trying to keep up the legacy of international socialism in surroundings ruled mainly by US imperialism and poisoned internally by chauvinism and other reactionary ideas. As a channel to make Matzpen’s views known, the group’s former activists use, for example, a website in Hebrew, Arabic, and English. — See also: Israelis and Palestinians: Conflict and Resolution, Haymarket Books more.. e-mail

Another Better Way for Mahmoud Abbas
Palestine Chronicle: 28 Jan 2013 – By Rima Merriman “The clearest distinction between [Mahmoud] Abbas’s Fatah and their main competitor, Hamas, is that Fatah argues for negotiations as the only way to resolve the conflict, and Hamas argues for violent resistance (or “popular resistance” as they are now describing it). Every time negotiations fail, Abbas loses credibility and Hamas gains. This is particularly true when Abbas draws a line in the sand (in this case, his demand for a settlement freeze) and then is forced to proceed anyway.” This is from an article written in the Atlantic almost a year ago.  “Why Won’t Abbas Negotiate”? Zvika Kriege, senior vice president at the S. Daniel Abraham Center for Middle East Peace, asked and concluded that “Abbas is justified in being hesitant to re-enter negotiations once again unless there is a high chance of success.” Since January 2012, much has happened in Palestine.  Yet it is clear Israel…more

Time for UK Liberal Democrats to Re-connect with Their Principles
Palestine Chronicle: 28 Jan 2013 – By Stuart Littlewood Alistair Carmichael is the Liberal Democrats’ Chief Whip. His letter to Karen Pollock of the Holocaust Educational Trust about MP David Ward’s remarks just before Holocaust Memorial Day is now in the public domain. When I read it I hoped it was a hoax.  It is shameful. And I say so as someone whose links with the Liberal Democrats go back to the old Liberal Party under the leadership of Jo Grimond, one of Carmichael’s predecessors in his parliamentary constituency of Orkney & Shetland and a man of great principle. What David Ward said on his website, which caused such an uproar, was simply this: “Having visited Auschwitz twice – once with my family and once with local schools – I am saddened that the Jews, who suffered unbelievable levels of persecution during the Holocaust, could within a few years of liberation from the death camps be…more

The Times Does Gaza: Oh, No You Don’t, Ismail Haniya
Palestine Chronicle: 28 Jan 2013 – By Steve Breyman It’s a news article! It’s a news analysis! It’s an op-ed! The Times’ is at it again in Gaza. Fares Akram’s recent piece about Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak’s visit to the Strip can’t quite make up its mind about what it is. It’s clear, however, what it isn’t: straight-up reportage of a foreign leader’s visit to the world’s largest open-air prison. Akram tells us that Razak came to Gaza for a few hours (along with his wife and foreign minister) in order to lay the cornerstone of a technical college his government is funding, and to sign an agreement to rebuild the prime minister’s office, bombed to smithereens by Israel last November. So far, so good (if you ignore Akram’s description of the November slaughter as a “bloody conflict;” bloody for whom?). But Akram can’t simply report this, and move on to his next assignment. He…more
