CCR Says: This is Your Victory: End Stop and Frisk Today

13 August 2013 — Center for Constitutional Rights

[It’s great to know, that every once in awhile, we, that is, we the People, achieve a significant victory over the forces of repression and reaction. And CCR’s legal battle to overturn ‘stop and frisk’ in NYC reminds me that back in 1980, the equivalent law here in the UK was called the “Suss Law” and its use against people of colour by the Met police eventually triggered riots that saw cities burn. The Suss Law was eventually repealed only to be re-instated (conveniently) by the phony ‘war on terror’ and used to stop hundreds of thousands of people, with virtually no ‘terror’ arrests. WB]

 Dear friends,

Yesterday we shared with you the breaking news that the federal judge in our case found the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk policy unconstitutional after an almost two-month trial. The judge said that for years the City had “turned a blind eye” to this racially discriminatory practice, and ordered a range of important reforms, including appointing a federal monitor to oversee the NYPD policy and a community input process so that those most affected can help us work for change. This is huge! I wanted to write to you today because you have been an important part of this landmark victory. CCR has been fighting discriminatory policing for more than 14 years, and your support sustained us for that whole time. On behalf of the millions of New Yorkers who have been stopped without suspicion over the last ten years, I deeply thank you.

Now I’m asking for your help again. Mayor Bloomberg, who stubbornly refuses to admit defeat and plants his feet firmly on the wrong side of history, has just vowed to appeal this historic decision. We need your help to keep the fight going so that the Mayor can’t undo this extraordinary win for our communities. It took years of CCR’s hard work to achieve this landmark victory, and we need your partnership to make justice possible as we move forward. Donate today to fight for racial justice in New York City and beyond!

The NYPD is the largest police force in the country, but with your help, we can show them that they are no match for the power of our communities and partners united for justice. Please give now to hold the NYPD accountable for its discriminatory stop-and-frisk practices.

Lawsuits of this magnitude and impact are costly to litigate, but yesterday, we saw the proof of CCR’s mission—that the law can create positive, powerful, longlasting social change. Please join with me today and become part of that change. Thank you.

With Appreciation,

Vincent Warren
Executive Director
