Obama in Europe on ‘Russian Bogeyman’ Tour

07.06.2014 | 00:00 | Finian CUNNINGHAM

With typical American hubris, US President Barack Obama came to Europe this week – yet again – with the rhetoric and demeanour of a knight in shining armour. The self-proclaimed «indispensable nation» was again indulging its own sense of vanity and delusion, telling others how lucky they are to have American protection. With the dramatic backdrop of an American F-16 fighter jet, Obama said: «I’m starting the visit here because our commitment to Poland’s security, as well as the security of our allies in central and eastern Europe, is a cornerstone of our own security, and it is sacrosanct»…

Ukraine: US Military Aid and Polish Pattern to Follow

07.06.2014 | 00:00 | Boris NOVOSELTSEV

…The first foreign trip of Ukrainian President-elect who is fully dependent on the United States has produced no surprises. Warsaw acts as a teacher giving new Kiev rulers lessons and making them follow the Polish pattern of nation-building. The meeting between Obama and Poroshenko is an example of relationship between a boss and his subordinate. The boss condescendingly expressed his approval. And Kiev appears to be happy as it treated this way…

Ice Station Obama

06.06.2014 | 00:00 | Wayne MADSEN

Although President Obama’s «pivot to Asia» is receiving media attention, his little-known push to establish American hegemony over the rapidly melting Arctic polar zone has gone largely unnoticed. Using three NATO allies, all of them monarchies, Obama is trying to establish a U.S.-led condominium of the United States, Canada, Norway, and Denmark over the Arctic, conspicuously leaving Russia out of the equation. Obama’s military and intelligence push into the Arctic could be taken from the pages of the 1960s Cold War thriller by Alistair MacLean, «Ice Station Zebra»…

Oettinger’s Gas Bluff

06.06.2014 | 00:00 | Pyotr ISKENDEROV

At a time when gas supplies to the European market from other suppliers are fall-ing, the advantages of collaboration with Russia have become obvious for Belgrade, for Sofia and for Athens. However, the European Commission refuses to admit the obvious. This follows, in part, from the most recent statement of EU Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger, who rushed to surround his support for the South Stream project with scandalous political conditions. In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, he stated that a «political decision» on the construction of the South Stream pipeline is not possible until Russia recognizes the government in Kiev. Oettinger provocatively urged Russian partners to «adhere to the practices of international law»…

Obama Visits Warsaw: US President to Execute Ukraine Sentenced to Death

05.06.2014 | 09:29 | Nikolai BOBKIN

The US President is on his European trip. The itinerary includes Poland, Belgium and France. Ukraine is in focus of the agenda. The US facilitated the armed coup staged in Kiev and welcomed nationalists coming to power. Actually it has handed down a death sentence to Ukraine. The administration does its best to strengthen the position of the new Ukrainian government. Obama has not even waited till the inauguration and met Poroshenko while on a visit to Warsaw… In Warsaw the President of the United States supported the policy of using force against Ukrainian opposition. It’s hard to conceive someone talking about the country’s unification while Donbass is encircled with barbed wire, but actually that’s what Obama and Poroshenko were talking about…

Time to Remember Operation Overlord

05.06.2014 | 00:00 | Yuriy RUBTSOV

One day before the operation Overlord began, Stalin informed Churchill that according to Tehran agreements, the Soviet offensive would start in mid-July at one of decisive sections of the front. The armies would gradually switch to offensive actions.  In the period late June – end of July the Soviet forces would start overall offensive. He meant operation Bagration launched on June 23, 1944 in Belorussiain concert with the actions of allies fighting at the second front. Hitler was encircled by the coalition forces and his collapse was inevitable. History allows drawing lessons. No matter the differences between political systems, the USSR and Western allies could unite against the common enemy – German Nazism threatening human civilization. What about Neo-Nazism emerging in Ukraine?  Few in the West share the opinion it must be opposed. The events of the 1930s are repeated again…

The Bilderberg Club on the Ukrainian Issue

05.06.2014 | 00:00 | Boris NOVOSELTSEV

The 62nd meeting of the Bilderberg Club, one of the most influential and closed structures of global governance that journalists have long since awarded the epithet “the global cabal”, took place in Copenhagen on 31 May-1 June 2014… There were two issues that became central: the situation in Ukraine, and Barack Obama’s foreign policy, regarded by the influential circles of the global establishment as inefficient… It is unlikely that the results of the Bilderberg discussions will manifest themselves tomorrow, but they will begin to be felt by the autumn, and in all the most important areas of world politics – Chinese, Russian, Ukrainian…

China Makes Overture to India’s Modi (II)

04.06.2014 | 09:54 | Melkulangara BHADRAKUMAR

…The US’s strategy toward the Modi government will be driven by its agenda to harness India tightly to its ‘rebalance’ strategy in Asia, which aims at isolating, surrounding and if possible containing China… The American pundits and the US lobbyists in India reprimanded the Manmohan Singh government for lacking «strategic thinking» and for still upholding the cold-war era concepts of «non-alignment» and «strategic autonomy». We may expect a sea change in the Indian attitudes in these respects under the Modi government. Much of India’s corporate media and big business who back Modi are also pressing for closer ties with the US and Japan…

China Makes Overture to India’s Modi (I)

04.06.2014 | 00:00 | Melkulangara BHADRAKUMAR

After an interlude of some fifty-five years China is making another historic overture toward India. The India-China relations are once again at a crossroads. The then Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai took the initiative to visit Delhi in 1960 even as storm clouds were gathering in the horizon over the disputed border between the two countries with a proposal to settle the differences in a spirit of give-and-take to mutual benefit. India spurned the offer and the rest is history. The forthcoming visit to Delhi on Sunday by the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as the special envoy of President Xi Xinping – an extraordinary gesture in diplomatic terms – is taking place in vastly different circumstances. But a common thread runs through all the same…

European Parliament’s New «Neo-Nazi / Far Right» – Not so «Nazi» and not so «Far Right»

04.06.2014 | 00:00 | Wayne MADSEN

Amid all the hair pulling and teeth gnashing by the Eurocrats and their overly paid pundits in the media about how the European Parliament electoral victories of the Eurosceptic French National Front, UK Independence Party, Danish People’s Party, and other «far right» parties could spell the imminent doom for the European Union, some level-headed observations are in order… The entrance of a large bloc of Eurosceptic parties into the Strasbourg parliament has resulted in confusion among the right, the center, and the left. Perhaps, this is because the old labels applied to the political spectrum are no longer applicable. Even the spectrum no longer applies…

Lugansk on Fire: Ukrainian City Becomes Target for Aviation Strikes

03.06.2014 | 19:27 | Adam NISHIMENKO

…The Kiev authorities committed another gross violation of the Geneva agreements and the OSCE roadmap by delivering an air strike in Lugansk, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that appeared late on June 2. “On June 2, the Kiev authorities committed another crime against their own people. The Ukrainian army delivered at an air strike at the building of the regional administration in which peaceful Ukrainian civilians died,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said. “The incident signals that the Kiev authorities are openly unwilling to search for ways of inter-ethnic peace in the country. Kiev has committed another gross violation of agreements which were fixed in the Geneva statement on April 17 and were later developed in the roadmap of the Swiss chair of the OSCE,” the Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement stressed. The Ministry paid attention to the fact that the escalation of military actions by the Ukrainian army and ultra-nationalists coincided with a visit to Kiev of U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense Derek Chollet…

President Obama’s West Point Foreign Policy Speech – Much Ado About Nothing

03.06.2014 | 00:00 | Andrei AKULOV

…President Obama outlined a foreign policy vision. It stresses the combination of strong military and the diplomatic instruments of alliances and sanctions to maintain global leadership. America’s exceptionalism is glorified, no matter the concept has been so much criticized internationally. As Russian President Vladimir Putin put it in a New York Times piece «It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation. There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too. We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal»…

The Inference from Lebanon About the Syrian Presidential Elections

03.06.2014 | 00:00 | Mahdi Darius NAZEMROAYA

Lebanon’s Hariri-led March 14 Alliance is supported by all the undemocratic Arab petro-sheikhdoms, including the Saudi regime. In twisted terms, the March 14 Alliance has consistently been promoted by the US and French governments as a beleaguered coalition of democrats struggling to save Lebanon from Hezbollah and its foreign allies Iran and Syria. This narrative has always been false… Ironically while the US says that the May 25 presidential elections in Ukraine that were organized by a coup-installed government are legitimate in the midst of fighting, but that the June 3 presidential elections in Syria are not.

Dreams about Lend Lease or Who Pays for US Military Aid to Kiev

02.06.2014 | 00:00 | Arkady DZIUBA

…President-elect Petro Poroshenko started to talk about US military aid in his first interview after the election. Talking to the Washington Post he said Ukraine needed nothing less than another Lend Lease. According to him, the US and Ukraine should conclude a security treaty. He knows what’s good for him… The White House does not want to send troops. It’s not an action Americans would approve. But at the same time Washington does not want to lose influence in Europe. That’s where the issue of arms supplies comes to the fore. Anyway mercenaries hired by private military companies are already waging combat actions in Ukraine making the US involved. Talking to West Point graduates in May 28 Obama said aid and training are the priorities enabling the US accomplish the missions without direct engagement…

What Obama Told Us At West Point

02.06.2014 | 00:00 | Paul Craig ROBERTS

At West Point Obama told us, to the applause of West Point cadets, that «American exceptionalism» is a doctrine that justifies whatever Washington does.  If Washington violates domestic and international law by torturing «detainees» or violates the Nuremberg standard by invading countries that have undertaken no hostile action against the US or its allies,  «exceptionalism» is the priest’s blessing that absolves Washington’s sins against law and international norms. Washington’s crimes are transformed into Washington’s affirmation of the rule of law…

Nationalist Plot in Ukraine and its Implications for Europe

01.06.2014 | 00:00 | Mikhail AGHAJANYAN

As Washington schemes are implemented, Ukraine becomes a testing ground for nationalist plots in Eastern Europe. The change of regime by making nationalists and radicals get to the front line of political struggle is a risky example for Europeans.  On average 10-15% of Europeans support nationalists. The division line between the West and the East is where the European Union is most vulnerable. The feeling of discontent with social and economic aspects of Eurointegration, as well as the rejection by European majority of such imposed values as the propaganda of homosexualism and single marriages give an impetus to spreading the ideas of Eurosceptics…
