Zombie ideas and divestment
Richard Falk, Al-Ahram Weekly 7/2/2014
The mainstreaming of the boycott and divestment campaign against Israel is a major achievement of the Palestinian solidarity movement.
At this moment it is right to celebrate unreservedly the outcome of the vote in the US Presbyterian General Assembly decreeing the divestment of US$21 million worth of shares in Motorola Solutions, Hewlett-Packard and Caterpillar, companies long and notoriously associated with implementing Israel’s unlawful occupation policies in the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza.
This carries forward the momentum of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Campaign and recent efforts emanating from the UN and the EU to induce governments, as well as corporations and financial institutions, to become aware that it is increasingly viewed as problematic under international law to profit from dealings with Israel’s settlements and occupation security mechanisms.
It is much too soon to suggest a cascading effect from recent moves in this direction, but the mainstreaming of the divestment and boycott campaign is a major achievement of the Palestinian solidarity movement that is displacing the moribund peace process that in recent months dramatised the extent to which the Israeli government is not interested in a favourable negotiated solution even as mediated by partisan US mediation mechanisms and in relation to a weak Palestinian Authority (PA) that seems readier to offer concessions than to seek compromises that incorporate Palestinian rights under international law.
The Presbyterian decision, itself vetted by an elaborate debate and producing a text crafted to narrow the distance between supporters and opponents of divestment, did not address issues of context…. more.. e-mail

Understanding Israel’s Actions
Mahmoud Abu Rahma, CounterPunch 7/4/2014
Justifying Occupation
It is essential that US citizens understand that this conflict should not continue to be viewed as a symmetrical one anymore. When they do not hear about it, there are vicious violations of international law against Palestinians every day; including closures/blockades, settlement activities (population transfer on account of our land and natural resources), displacement, killings, detention and torture.
We were all occupied by the developments in the past few days, and shocked to find out about killings. The Israeli government kept from us all that the three settler teenagers were killed from the first day because they wanted to carry out a large military operation in the occupied Palestinian territory. This operation saw hundreds of Palestinians arrested, tortured, killed and injured. Dozens of attacks were also directed at the besieged Gaza Strip. Incitement to violence and hatred went very high.
Since 12 June 2014, the day the teenage settlers went missing, Israel declared that its operation had two aims: find them and put pressure on Hamas and the Palestinian Authority to abandon a recent unity agreement and return to full separation between Gaza and the West Bank. Now we know that the Israeli government knew they were killed from the first day; however, the operation to destroy Palestinian unity and reinstate separation is ongoing. Separation and isolation, if successful, will allow Israel to annex large areas in the West Bank and divide Palestinians to keep them under control by military force; as opposed to a peace agreement that would end the occupation of the territory captured by Israel in 1967. This is a typical case of using violence to achieve political; not security, gains. In doing so, Israel has violated the human rights of Palestinian civilians in many ways, and has created an environment that allowed for kidnapping, murdering, and running over of Palestinian children by Jewish settlers in the West Bank. more.. e-mail

Palestinian teen murdered in suspected ’revenge kidnapping’
Michael Omer-Man, +972 Magazine 7/2/2014
Heavy clashes take place in a number of East Jerusalem neighborhoods, leading to dozens of injuries, including two photographers from Activestills; Kerry conveys condolences to the Palestinian people over despicable murder; ‘revenge’ calls spread throughout Israeli social networks, streets of Jerusalem.
Clashes between Palestinian youths and Israeli police broke out Wednesday morning when news broke of a suspected kidnapping and murder of a Palestinian teenager in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Hanina hours earlier. Speculation that the killing was a nationalistically motivated and perpetrated by Jewish Israelis as revenge for the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank appeared almost immediately in nearly every Israeli media outlet. Police initially urged caution, saying that no motive had been established, but later said they estimated it was a “nationalistic” crime.
Muhammad Hussein Abu Khdeir was walking to morning prayers for Ramadan after 3 a.m. Wednesday morning when a car pulled up and a number of passengers forced him in. Police later found his burned body in a Jerusalem-area forest. A gag order covered other details of the investigation. The family reportedly agreed to an autopsy and the funeral was scheduled for Thursday.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday condemned the “despicable and senseless abduction and murder,” adding, “[t]here are no words to convey adequately our condolences to the Palestinian people.”
“Those who undertake acts of vengeance only destabilize an already explosive and emotional situation,” Kerry continued. “We look to both the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority to take all necessary steps to prevent acts of violence and bring their perpetrators to justice.” more.. e-mail

The Haunting of Iraq and Palestine
Renee Parsons, CounterPunch 7/4/2014
The Ghosts of Colonial Powers
After almost a century, the seeds of the on-going death, destruction and violence in the Middle East that began during WWI can be directly traced to two historic documents that continue to provide the foundation for US foreign policy in the Middle East. Almost one hundred years after the flawed Sykes-Picot and Balfour documents, the tragically long suffering peoples of Iraq and Palestine, both betrayed by the British in 1916, still live with a sorrow and anguish that offers little hope for peace and reconciliation.
More than just a mere historic misjudgment, the McMahon-Hussein letters of 1915 bear witness to the role of de
liberate British deception throughout the annexation of Palestine and its ultimate treachery during the Arab revolt (1916 – 1918). Led by the Sharif Husayn bin Ali, the revolt was initiated to secure Arab independence from the rule of the Ottoman Empire and to create one unified Arab state spanning from what is now Aleppo, Syria, including Iraq and stretching to Aden, Yemen (not including the area controlled by the rival Saud clan).
Hussein began secret correspondence with British High Commissioner Sir Henry McMahon who encouraged the revolt in the hopes of obstructing Ottoman’s support as an ally of Germany in exchange for official British recognition of an Arab state and Hussein’s expectation that Palestine would go to Palestinians after the war. Custodian of Mecca and Medina, Hussein was declared Caliph when the Ottoman Caliphate was abolished and was ultimately overthrown by Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud. He was exiled to Trans-Jordan where his son became Abdullah I of Jordan.
It was not until members of the Bolshevik revolution perusing the Tsar’s correspondence after the 1917 revolution discovered the existence of the Sykes-Picot agreement to split the Arab territories into British and French administered areas…. more.. e-mail

On Gilad Atzmon’s Critique of Ilan Pappe
Dissident Voice: 4 Jul 2014 – On BBC’s news program Hardtalk , historian Dr Ilan Pappe answers questions from interviewer Stephen Sackur which begins with Mr Sackur describing Ilan Pappe as maintaining that the Jewish state is racist, born of a deliberate program of ethnic cleansing. This very interesting discussion, which takes the form of an adversarial debate . In response, Mr Gilad Atzmon , author of the book, The Wandering Who, has the following to say: the history professor is afraid to utter the ‘J word’ [implying cowardice], he fails to analyze Zionism and Israeli’s action within the appropriate ideological, historical and cultural context and he refuses to question the true meaning of the Jewish state.” … “Instead of identifying the Zionist crime within the context of Jewish history and culture, Pappe attempts [italics mine] to isolate the Zionist crime by disconnecting it from Jewish history and continuum.” … In practice, Pappe actually attempts to conceal [implying willful…more
