Israel’s Operation Stone Age
David Hearst, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 7/10/2014
Summer Rains, Autumn Clouds, Hot Winter, Cast Lead, Returning Echo, Pillar of Defence and now Protective Edge. The names of Israel’s assaults on Gaza are a fantasy, an exercise in make believe. They buy Israel neither peace nor deterrence.
They are however extremely effective. They are effective at raising yet another generation of Palestinians committed to Israel’s destruction. In this particular case, and at this particular time, nothing but a full scale assault on Gaza could more effectively kill off the idea in the Palestinian mind – regardless of where it resides – that Israelis are prepared to live alongside them peacefully in a separate state.
This is the solution to which liberal zionists are wedded, because it is the only one which guarantees the survival of a Jewish majority within its 1948 borders. And yet it is precisely this fading solution that Israel’s military might is now proceeding to bury in the rubble of its bombardments. A better name for the current offensive would be Operation Stone Age. The stones referred to are those of another intifada.
Khaled Meshaal, Hamas’ leader should be listened to when he said on Wednesday that it will not be long before you will not be able to find a Palestinian who dares talk about a state based on the 67 borders. I am guessing, because I have not asked him, but the writer of the following blog which appeared on Tuesday, would probably agree.
“However, the rapid deterioration we’re experiencing in the security situation did not come because of the vile murder of Naftali, Eyal and Gil-Ad, may their memories be blessed. The deterioration is first and foremost a result of the illusion that the government’s inaction on every front can actually freeze the situation in place, the illusion that “price tag” is simply a few slogans on the wall and not pure racism, the illusion that everything can be solved with a little more force….more.. e-mail
Israel’s dominant media narrative
Rachel Shabi, Al Jazeera 7/6/2014
In reporting the current clashes, why does Western media never begin with Palestinian pain?
Here we are again: staring at a series of terrible events in Israel and the Palestinian territories. A 16-year-old Palestinian, Mohammed Abu Khdeir, was kidnapped, stabbed and then burned alive. We don’t know for sure, but Israeli police report a likely “nationalistic” motive – meaning that his killers were Jewish Israelis.
This murder comes after the bodies of three kidnapped Israeli teenagers were found in the occupied West Bank last week, after an 18-day search. That military search for Eyal Ifrach, Gilad Shaer and Naftali Frankel, during which six Palestinians were killed and hundreds more detained without charge, was described by Amnesty International as “collective punishment”.
Meanwhile, the news that the Israeli teenagers had been shot dead – evidence of which was obscured for weeks while Israelis united in the campaign to “Bring back our Boys” – unleashed a rising clamour for vengeance.
A Facebook page called “the people of Israel demand revenge” rapidly drew 35,000 likes; hundreds of Israelis, looking like a lynch mob from the old American south, ran the streets of Jerusalem chanting “Death to Arabs” and seeking out Palestinians to attack, using Arab accents to help identity their targets; Palestinians were verbally and physically attacked on streets and on buses; an attempted kidnapping of another Palestinian child was reported in East Jerusalem, close to where Abu Khdeir was later snatched.
Vengeful climate
But the ugly truth is that this bone-chillingly vengeful climate – which the families of the killed Israeli teens came out of mourning to oppose – can be no surprise…. more.. e-mail
Israel’s No-State Outcome
Clayton Swisher, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 7/10/2014
As the latest bombs rain down on Gaza, one has to wonder where the American foreign policy Establishment will see Israel in a few years time, especially as it gives unqualified financial and military support come what may. As an American journalist based in Doha, I frequently travel to Israel, the occupied Palestinian territories, and most the regional countries. From my vantage, the “no state” outcome is just around the corner.
Judging by most of the trends, Israel has already become a “Green Zone.” Can anyone who landed at Ben Gurion Airport or crossed the Allenby Bridge or egressed the separation Wall divide really claim otherwise? But this too is a fleeting stage. The most probable evolution is what can be figuratively called “Combat Outpost Israel.” And even this characterization will be a momentary one. Just as most combat outposts are either abandoned following a war or overrun in conflict, given present circumstances I believe the same fate awaits what is today called the Israeli state.
Violent chaos and aspiring Caliphates, however viable, are springing up throughout the region. Sunni Arab fighters vie over land rendered ungovernable by ousted tyrants and their puppet replacements. Some bear names like ISIS or Jabhat al-Nusra, while the alphabet soup of Al Qaeda franchises (AQIM, AQAP, Al Shabaab) grab most the headlines. There is additionally a vast majority of Sunni and Shiites alienated by their own political leadership, longing for a better way. It is true that, for the time being, they are focused on killing each other over their own deeply embedded religious differences. The US and Israel seem contented to let them have their go, perhaps believing it will divert or exhaust them.
While these Arab revolts have begun in their local areas, the necessary first step is to achieve freedom or independence. But along the way, they are upending or will topple those Western-hailed “moderates” who have perpetuated alliances in the region that are viewed as unjust, especially with Israel…. more.. e-mail
Arafat case may prove another huge judicial blow for Israel
Nabila Ramdani, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 7/7/2014
As Israel tries to cope with the fallout from the sadistic murder of a young Palestinian, there is an allegedly unlawful killing threatening to cause it even greater problems. France has effectively re-opened the investigation into the 2004 death of Yasser Arafat, arguably the most internationally
famous Palestinian of the last few decades, and a Nobel Prize winning peace maker.
When asked in public if they had wanted Arafat killed, powerful Israelis nowadays insist they did not. They concede that the late president of the Palestinian Authority was an ‘obstacle’ to peace on their own terms but, even in the notoriously violent arena of Middle East realpolitik, murders are not considered a sensible strategy. They invariably lead to more violence, as the Intifada threatened by the lethal burning of Mohammed Abu Khdeir shows. The 17-year-old from East Jerusalem was first kidnapped as part of a suspected revenge attack for the killings of three Israeli youths by unknown criminals.
The State of Israel pays huge amounts of money to public relations experts, but knows that its international image is currently being torn to pieces by the Khdeir atrocity. There is also compelling video evidence that the dead teenager’s 15-year-old cousin, Tariq Abu Khdeir, was severely beaten by Israeli security forces before being arrested following Mohammed’s death, to the point that he was unconscious at one stage. Tariq happens to be a US citizen – a factor which is ensuring maximum publicity for both outrages.
Tel Aviv communications advisors will have even more work to do now that France – the country where Arafat died – responds to Swiss evidence that he was also killed unlawfully, and indeed suffered a horrendously painful death.
Right up until a few months before his demise, the 75-year-old was still passionately engaged in the process of ending the war between Palestinians and Israelis through diplomacy…. more.. e-mail

In the Case of Israel: Western Hypocrisy at its Best
Palestine Chronicle: 10 Jul 2014 – By Ludwig Watzal The kidnapping of three Israeli teenagers and their murder was a despicable crime. Those responsible must be held accountable and brought to justice. Everybody condemned this heinous crime, including all Western leaders. After the abduction, the Israeli occupying forces started a search throughout the West Bank that led not only to the killings of a lot of innocent Palestinians but also to the devastation of uncountable homes and the demolition of two houses of assumed suspects. The principle of the presumption of innocence until proven guilty only applies to the Jewish citizens of Israel and the colonizers in the West Bank. Right from the start, Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu blamed Hamas for the abduction. Up till now, he could not deliver single evidence. Instead, the…more

Mahmoud Abbas, begins the op-ed by reminding Israel that 26 years have passed since Palestinians endorsed the two-state solution, and in effect conceded 78% of their historic homeland, agreeing to have a Palestinian state on what remains of Palestine inside Israel’s 1967 borders. Abbas ends his oped by assuring Israel he remains “totally committed to the vision of a two-state solution, normalization and peace with our neighbor – Israel”. Abbas knows that for Palestinians and Israelis to be neighbours there must be two independent states, Palestine and Israel,…more
