Israeli jets destroying Gaza water and sewerage systems: officials
Mohammed Omer, Middle East Eye7/13/2014
Health crisis looming as Israeli attacks accused of targeting already fragile water and sewage infrastructure
Israel s Gaza offensive, which by the sixth day has claimed at least 145 lives, including 28 children, and injured as many as 1,000 people, threatens to bring an even deeper humanitarian disaster to the area, with vital water and sewerage systems being destroyed by Israeli air strikes.
Palestinian officials on Saturday claimed that the Israelis had targeted water wells in different parts of Gaza City, leaving thousands of families without access to clean drinking water. An Oxfam official said going into the weekend that 90 percent of the water in Gaza was already unsafe to drink.
The sewerage system is also a target, with Israeli warplanes targeting sewage treatment stations in West Gaza City early on Saturday. The areas most affected are Shati refugee camp, Tal al-Hawa, Sheikh Ejleen and most Western districts, according to Saed al-Din Atbash, head of water facilities at Gaza Municipality.
Atbash told reporters in Gaza City that Israel is deliberately targeting the wells.
“Warplanes have targeted two wells directly, one near to al-Maqwsi area 9a densely populated area with residential tower blocks) and another in al-Zaytoun, both used by 7,000 inhabitants,” he said.
Israeli warplanes have also targeted five water pipelines that supply large numbers of Gazans. With each line providing water to 20,000 inhabitants, as many as 100,000 people could be affected by the attacks.
The latest damage to vital infrastructure is further straining the Palestinian health system, and the World Health Organization has already appealed for $60m to help prevent its collapse….more..e-mail
The abnormal normality of the occupation and its escalations
Mya Guarnieri, +972 Magazine7/14/2014
To pretend as though the events of recent days are extraordinary is to ignore the context that led to this flare-up and is disrespectful to the millions of Palestinians who wrestle with the occupation every day, in both the West Bank and in Gaza.
It s Wednesday. The death toll in Gaza is in the dozens and rising as Layla*, a Christian Palestinian, gets into my car. We live in Bethelehem. She needs a ride to pick up her tasrich (permit) from the Civil Administration s office in Gush Etzion, where Israel and the Western media claim that the current flare-up began.
Layla laughs at our clothes as she opens the passenger door. With her sleeveless top and above-the-knee skirt, she says, she looks like a settler. I m in long sleeves and jeans, which Layla calls Abu Dis style, referring to the conservative Muslim village where I teach. Although we joke about our clothes, I wonder if they reflect the increased tension of recent days; I wonder if they reflect the anxieties neither of us want to admit to.
We leave Bethlehem and merge onto a road that s shared by army jeeps, Palestinians, and Jewish Israeli civilians and settlers. Layla sighs, I don t know who to be afraid of anymore, Mya, she says. We reason that being together keeps us safe from everyone. No matter who might stop us, we ll be able to reason with them in their own language. Both our clothes and words will be familiar.
But, as we drive deeper into Gush Etzion, we quickly notice how normal things are in the West Bank. Look at all the settlers, Layla exclaims, tapping on the window as we pass them. Even though it s midday, even though it s blisteringly hot, even though three Israeli boys were murdered not far from here, even though Mohammed Abu Khdeir was brutally murdered by Jews, even though settlements are illegal, even though Israel is pummeling Gaza, there they are. Settlers. Waiting for buses. Hitchhiking.more..e-mail
Israel to the Palestinians: submit, leave or die
Jeff Halper, Redress7/13/2014
What is clear is that the military operations had a purpose of their own, that they would have been launched regardless, that they were merely waiting on a pretext.
US Secretary of State John Kerry s initiative may have ended with a whimper instead of a bang, but its impact on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was significant and fundamental nonetheless.
The end of the political process, futile as it may have been, triggered the collapse of the status quo as we have known it for the past 47 years. It set in motion a series of events that will confront us with two stark alternatives regarding Israel and Palestine: either the permanent warehousing of an entire population or the emergence of a single democratic state.
Premeditated aggression
Both the blatantly disproportionate response to the kidnapping and killing of the three Israeli teenagers and, as I write, the all-out air strikes on Gaza, have been cast by Israel as military operations: Operations Brothers Keeper and Operation Protective Edge. Neither had anything to do with the operations purported triggers, the search for the teenagers or rocket fire from Gaza.
Palestinian cities in the occupied West Bank supposedly enjoying extra-territorial status were invaded in Operation Brothers Keeper, more than 2,000 homes were ransacked, some 700 people arrested. Who knows as yet the devastation wrought on Gaza 100 dead in more than 1,100 air attacks so far, mostly civilians according to reports; deafening around-the-clock bombing of communities by American-supplied F-15 jets and artillery from the ground and sea that amounts to collective torture; Israel s foreign minister calling for cutting off all electricity and water amid threats to completely obliterate Gaza s infrastructure….more..e-mail
Implementing the master plan for East Jerusalem
Amira Hass, Ha aretz7/14/2014
Israel’s undeclared goal is to expel the residents of East Jerusalem from the city, or at least to limit their number and weaken them as a national community. There is a direct connection between the murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir on the one hand, and the Jerusalem municipality, Interior Ministry, Jerusalem police and High Court of Justice on the other. Since the occupation and annexation of East Jerusalem, these official bodies have initiated, implemented and approved deliberately discriminatory policies against its Palestinian residents. Their message is clearly heard by the inciters and has been internalized by the murderers.
A long, long time ago, in other words two or three days ago, before the new war with Gaza began, the murder of Abu Khdeir by Jews aroused condemnation and shock, including from the right-wing establishment: ministers, MKs and settlement rabbis. They managed to present it as a single, isolated incident, unrelated to anything. Although the impression is spoiled by the Facebook storm troopers who praise the murder, and the anonymous individuals who destroyed the monument built by Israelis in the Jerusalem Forest, where the boy s body was found, what s important is that people abroad know that Economy Minister Naftali Bennett and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemn the act. They are even considering declaring Abu Khdeir a terror victim.
Because what could be easier than condemning the burning of a boy when he was still alive? It s also easy to condemn the murder because the suspects come from the social sector, the community, the accent, the political party and the place of residence that can be conveniently shrugged off. It s not our people. After all, they re not really normative like us. And the main thing, they aren t settlers or hilltop youth. more..e-mail

Israel s Atrocity and the West s Ignorance
Palestine Chronicle: 14 Jul 2014 – By Jamal Kanj Seeing free Western media with headlines like Rockets raining over Israel , or describing the success of Israel s Iron Dome defence system in intercepting missiles from Gaza, you would assume there was a war between equals or even that poor Israel was under attack. For example, PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) Executive Committee member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi called on the United Nations…more
