Gaza resistance will not be crushed
Ramzy Baroud, Ma an News Agency7/23/2014
On the 13th day of Israel’s so-called Operation Protective Edge, stories of entire families collectively pulverized, women, and children keenly targeted by Israeli soldiers saturate the media.
Until now, more than 630 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and 27 Israel soldiers been killed at the hands of the Resistance. In Shujaiyya, elders, mothers and children scrambled for cover as shells mercilessly rained down, stealing the souls of countless innocents.
The destruction is overwhelming, and everywhere, Palestinians lament there is nowhere that is safe. Regardless, resolve is strong and the people of Gaza will not resign themselves to surrender.
The resistance movement in Gaza is often misrepresented intentionally at times, and at other times innocuously. In the heat of the information battle that has ensued since Israel unleashed its latest war many facts and essential context have gone missing.
Historically, Gaza has been a hub for uninterrupted popular resistance since the ethnic cleansing of Palestine at the hands of Zionist militias, and later the Israeli army, in 1947-48. An estimated 200,000 of Palestine s then nearly 800,000 refugees were forced there, with most enduring squalid and humiliating conditions.
Despite the shock of war and the humiliation of defeat, Gazans fought back almost immediately. There was no Fatah, no Hamas, and no siege — in comparison to its current definition — and Gazans did not organize around any political factions, or ideologies. Rather they assembled in small groups known to Gazans as Fedayeen — freedom fighters.
These were dispossessed refugees still unaware of the complexity of their political surroundings, and the Fedayeen were mostly young Palestinian refugees fighting to return to their home. But their operations grew bolder day by day.more..e-mail

It is our right to celebrate the capture of an Israeli soldier
Abdel Bari Atwan, Middle East Monitor (MEMO)7/23/2014
“Terrorist” Hamas kills soldiers but “civilised” Netanyahu kills children. I fear that the blood of innocent civilians will have been shed in vain due to Arab mediation and these are my reasons.
Those who witnessed the happiness in many Arab cities, and in Gaza particularly, knows how eager the Muslim Ummah is for a victory of any sort. Hence, when “Abu Obaida” of Al-Aqsa Brigades announced the capture of an Israeli soldier, and showed his photograph and military number during the announcement, for the Arabs this was a small victory after many a year of being oppressed.
Perhaps capturing an Israeli soldier does not represent a huge success, at least not in the minds of the analysts using statistics to assess Israel’s aggression against Gaza. However, oppressed populations look at such events from a more nationalistic and empathetic standpoint. In fact, they consider different factors altogether; when Benjamin Netanyahu announced the capture of the soldier and the death of 20 others (the number has since increased to 30), one could see the sadness and defeat on his face. The joy that was felt by many people, on the other hand, was almost reflexive in spite of all the difficulties facing the resistance. I was among those who rejoiced.
The Palestinian resistance captures and kills soldiers whereas Israeli soldiers kill children and demolish homes atop the civilians who live inside them, almost in anger after failing to find the fighters defending the population being punished collectively by Israel. It is here that we can begin to make comparisons between a resistance that believes in morality and a barbaric and racist army that does not have the word “humanity” in its lexicon; that is, if it has any words other than death and destruction there to begin with.

Israel, not Hamas, orchestrated the latest conflict in Gaza
by Musa al-Gharbi, Aljazeera America7/22/2014
Washington’s ironclad support for Israel provides effective shield for war crimes
In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the dominant discourse is that the Palestinian militants provoked the hostilities while Israel, as President Barack Obama affirmed last week, is acting in legitimate self-defense. Many have attempted to problematize this narrative, for instance by arguing that Israel, as an occupying power, does not have a legitimate legal or moral claim to self-defense. Others have argued that rockets fired by Hamas do not constitute an existential crisis for Israel or its citizens and certainly did not warrant the killing of more than 500 Palestinians, mostly civilians, including women and children.
While these are all valid and important points, the broader narrative remains largely unchallenged: Hamas began firing rockets at Israel first, triggering Israel s latest military incursion. This is not true. In fact, far from acting in self-defense, the crisis is the result of deliberate actions by Israel over the last few weeks first to stir up anti-Arab sentiment among the Israeli population and then to provoke Hamas into open conflict.
Israeli provocations
The current escalation began with the abduction of three Israeli teenagers from settlements in the West Bank. The fact that the three were kidnapped from settlements is an important detail that is often passed over far too quickly or overlooked altogether. The settlements, what they represent and how the settlers interact with the Palestinian population form a critical part of the episode s context.
After the kidnapping, for more than two weeks Israeli authorities put on a show of looking for the missing teens….more..e-mail

Deconstructing Israeli Claims
Daoud Kuttab, Arabic Media Internet Network (AMIN)7/24/2014
Before the information revolution, it was a given that a victor writes history. In today s world, with credible irrefutable information at your fingertips, how come so many people get it wrong? Media spin has gone into overdrive in justifying the Israeli onslaught against Palestinians in Gaza. A careful
study of the facts and the reality is in order to set the record straight.
Israel and many of its allies in the world, including the US, say that the current military offensive on the 1.8 million Palestinians of Gaza is a mere defensive act . The Israelis repeatedly say that no country in the world would tolerate the barrage of rockets that are falling on its population.
Before dealing with the defence issue, it is critically important to note that Israel is no ordinary country. It is an occupying power that has for 47 years held a captive Palestinian population under its military control. Israel, which received its initial legitimacy by the UN in 1947, has refused to honour UN Security Council Resolution 242 that considered its occupation of Arab lands in 1967 to be unacceptable. Since then, Israel has also violated international law by moving its people into occupied territories, it has illegally confiscated Palestinian land and for seven years collectively punished the people of Gaza with an immoral and illegal land and water siege that has never been authorised by a single country or world power.
As to the defensive nature of the Israeli attack on Gaza, it is of extreme significance that Israel began the war on the Strip verbally and militarily when three Israelis disappeared in areas under Israeli military control in the West Bank. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the Gaza-based Hamas leadership of being behind the kidnapping. In revenge against Hamas, Israel arrested hundreds of Palestinians, including elected parliamentarians, destroyed the homes of two Palestinians it suspects (without proof) of being involved in the kidnapping/murder and acted against Gaza. The Israeli shelling of Gaza intensified after the discovery of the three killed Israelis. A number of Palestinians, including a child, was killed in the Israeli air bombardment.more..e-mail

US Plays Decisive Role in Israel s Attack on Gaza
Palestine Chronicle: 23 Jul 2014 – By Jonathan Cook Two reporters for major US TV channels were summarily removed last week from covering Israel s attack on Gaza, moments before Israel launched a ground invasion. NBC pulled out Ayman Mohyeldin, who has been widely praised for the even-handedness of his reporting from Gaza, just as he landed a harrowing scoop. He had kicked a football with four boys who were killed moments later by an Israeli missile. Mohyeldin managed a few tweets before being removed, allegedly on security grounds. But why then did NBC immediately send in a replacement? After a public outcry, Mohyeldin was reinstated, but no proper explanation of the decision has been provided. Shortly afterwards, CNN reassigned its reporter in Israel, Diana Magnay, after a tweet in which she labelled as scum an Israeli mob that threatened her with violence as she filmed them celebrating missile explosions in Gaza. The tweet was deleted within…more

Telegenically Dead: Israel s Crumbling Media War
Dissident Voice: 22 Jul 2014 – Israeli propaganda has hit a new low. While the world was still trying to come to terms with the mass deaths in Shuja iyeh , Benjamin Netanyahu went on CNN to state that Hamas uses the telegenically dead to further their cause. He added that for Hamas: The more the dead, the better. Even while Netanyahu followed the propaganda script, which is to first show sympathy and express remorse, by reducing dead Palestinians to a photo-op he showed how his own mind works. There is a standard script for how to deal with Palestinian casualties. After Israel killed four boys on the Gaza beach on July 16th, the US establishment media fell in line behind Israel s PR framework: acknowledge the tragedy but blame Hamas. This is exactly what Israeli spokesperson Mark Regev said on Channel 4 News when grilled by the anchor Jon Snow. It is also how the US State Department…more
