Book Review: A Century of War – Anglo-American Oil Politics and the New World Order by William Engdahl By William Bowles

31 December 2004

A Century of War – Anglo-American Oil Politics and the New World Order by William Engdahl. Pluto Books, London 2004.

Many years ago I read the autobiography of R Buckminster Fuller (one of my heroes whilst at art school), who before becoming a visionary architect/engineer/designer and philosopher trained as a naval architect, a profession he later credited with equipping him with his holistic vision of the world. Not surprisingly therefore, Fuller had an abiding interest in the Royal Navy’s strategic role in maintaining the British Empire. Continue reading

Where were you when the lights went out? By William Bowles

23 December 2004

It’s estimated that within the first couple of decades after the Europeans ‘discovered’ the Americas, they exterminated around fifteen million people in a frenzy of bloodletting that has no precedent in history. Of course it’s not called a Holocaust, in fact it’s not even mentioned in the white man’s history books, but it’s a fact nevertheless. We (I use the term loosely) managed to almost entirely depopulate the Caribbean islands of their indigenous people and replace them with slaves and then moved on to do the same to the Americas.

Evildoers, here we come

The road to Damascus is the key node in the Bush/neo-con roadmap for a new Middle East.

by Pepe Escobar

Washington is faced with two options. It could restore the draft – provoking a minor social earthquake in the US. Or it could develop – and deploy – tactical nuclear weapons, mini-nukes. Fallujah – flattened by “conventional” means – was just a test. On the road to Damascus, the road to Tehran, the road to Riyadh, the neo-cons would be much more tempted to go nuclear.

John Pilger – An Epic Silence

Readers of our Media Alerts will be well aware of John Pilger’s view of the media and establishment power more generally. He reserves a special place in his articles for the deceptions of the ‘liberal’ press. In October 2003, he wrote in the New Statesman: Continue reading

Moral Victory

Religious Exploitation, and the New American Creed

By Dom Stasi

Bush’s style appeals to what the TV ministers call their “Value Voters.” So, let the exit polls be damned, the Evangelicals carried the day for their poster boy. If they didn‚t, they at least gave the Republican crooks who own this president a plausible vehicle to which they might attribute the otherwise inexplicable vote counts in this year‚s national election. They have changed our country into something its founders never intended it to be, a virtual theocracy, and they did it through abuse of the very system first designed to prevent it.

Media Lens: The Power of Nightmares – Adam Curtis Responds

7 December 2004 — Media Lens

On 18 and 19 November, we sent out a two-part media alert about the recent BBC2 series, ‘The Power of Nightmares’ (for transcripts, go to: www.acutor.be/silt/index.php?id=572)

Adam Curtis, who wrote and directed the series, located key goals of modern US foreign policy in the beliefs of a group of myth-making neo-conservative “idealists”.

Media Lens: Protest the BBC on Thursday, December 2 – This is Why. Part 2

1 December 2004 — Media Lens

Introduction

Tomorrow, December 2, the peace group A Call For Light is organising a peaceful vigil outside the BBC, Bush House, Aldwych, London, between 5:30pm and 7:00pm.

Like the rest of the mainstream media, the BBC did next to nothing to expose the devastating effects of US-UK war and sanctions on the civilian population of Iraq from 1990 onwards. Ahead of last year’s war, the BBC endlessly echoed and channelled UK government propaganda claims, almost never subjecting those claims to serious challenge.
