NEWS

1. Ebooks now available from Housmans!

We are pleased to announce that you are now able to buy Adobe eBooks from our online shop. At present there are approximately 100,000 titles available, but that figure is set to grow over time.

The world of eBooks is one that is still taking shape. Behind corporate doors there is a fierce battle raging over the pricing of eBooks, and a cut-throat competition for market dominance. The usual suspects of Amazon and Apple are desperately fighting for a monopoly position. eBooks bought from Amazon can only be used on Amazon’s e-reader, the Kindle, whilst eBooks compatible for the iPad can only be bought from Apple’s iBookstore. This attempt to lock users in is sure to fail in the long-term (we hope!).

Housmans is able to offer eBooks on the Adobe Digital Editions platform, which seems to be a better, fairer, and more open platform than the others available. Adobe PDFs and Adobe ePubs can be viewed on all laptops, netbooks, and non-Amazon and non-Apple eBook readers, tablets and phones.

If anyone has any feedback about eBooks in general, or thoughts as to an alternative provider of eBooks that you think Housmans should be using, please let us know.

To find an eBook from Housmans Online Shop just make a search as normal, and if the title you are looking for is available it will appear labelled as an ePub or PDF in the ‘Format’ description. If you have any problems please contact Nik by email nik@housmans.com .

2. Volunteer fundraising cleaner

Peace House at 5 Caledonian Road, King’s Cross, London N1, requires a volunteer cleaner to make fortnightly visits (approx 2.5hrs work). In return the Trustees of the building will donate £60 per month to Housmans Bookshop, or to a charity or campaign of your choice. If interested please get in touch with Ian Dixon: 14 Welcomes Road, Kenley, Surrey, CR8 5HD or call 020 8660 0093, or email: iandixon@btinternet.com

3. Getting ready for the national anti-cuts demo on the 26th

The TUC-called national anti-cuts demo on the 26th March is shaping up to be the largest demonstration since the Iraq war, with coaches booked from all over the country. But in order for it to achieve the maximum turnout it needs your support. The Coalition of Resistance have printed thousands of flyers and posters, and would appreciate your help in spreading the word. Just come into Housmans and we will give you as many as you think you might need. See you on the streets on the 26th!
