Gaza: Five reasons Israel should cease its attacks on Gaza
Julie Webb-Pullman in Gaza, Scoop8/21/2011
Eilat incidents
Israel has provided the flimsiest of evidence that either the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), or any Gazans at all, were responsible for the attacks near Eilat that killed eight Israelis on Thursday. To claim that Kalashnikov bullets found at the scene are evidence of Gazan involvement because Kalashnikovs are also used in Gaza (1) is a trifle disingenuous and simplistic, given that Kalashnikovs are also used in Israel itself, Egypt, and another 70-odd countries around the world. Both the PRC and the Hamas government have denied any involvement in the Eilat attacks.
Or does the PRC Israel accuses really refer to the Peoples’ Republic of China, because a teeshirt at the scene was made there? Clearly the Gaulloise cigarette butt and the empty coke bottle on the roadside suggest that the putative Gazan/Chinese terrorists were working in collaboration with…a French-US cell responsible for health terrorism, perhaps?
There is certainly a lot more evidence for the last phrase, than for ANY of the former propositions.
Right to “security” and “self-defence” Human rights are something that ALL humans are supposed to enjoy – not just Zionist Israelis. Palestinians also have the “right” to “security” – despite the international community doing precious little to uphold it for the last 63 years, from the day in 1948 they so generously gave away Palestinian land without their consent to establish the state of Israel within proscribed borders, to the present day.
Borders designate the territory within which a nation can be secure – they define the parameters to be respected by itself regarding ‘excursions’, and others regarding ‘incursions’. When territory is subjected to incursions, the occupants have the right of proportional self-defence, under international law. more.. e-mail
Evidence undermines gov’t’s claim that terrorists were Gazans
Yossi Gurvitz, +972 Magazine8/22/2011
The Minister of Defense and the Prime Minister claim the terrorist attack last week came from Gaza. They have yet to provide any proof – and the evidence looks dubious
An unknown group carried out a combined attack from Sinai into Israel, hitting a number of targets. Six Israeli civilians were murdered and two soldiers were killed; so were seven of the terrorists and a number of Egyptian security personnel. While the attacks were carried out, Minister of Defense Ehud Barak quickly told the public the people responsible were the Popular Resistance Committee of the Gaza Strip; within hours the IAF attacked a house in the Strip and killed several of its leaders. Later that day, Prime Minister Netanyahu said that the people responsible for the attacks were killed. This attack by the IAF is what spurred the recent round of escalation – and it’s worth noting the IAF has been raising the flames in the regions for about a month, with the Israeli media quietly ignoring it.
However, Israel has never supplied any proof that the attack has indeed originated in the Gaza Strip. The PRC have denied involvement in the attack. An Israeli propaganda apparatus, the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, also claimed (Hebrew) the PRC was behind the attacks, but had to tautologically write “no terror organizations has publicly claimed responsibility for the attack and the Popular Resistance Committee has denied any involvement. However, the Israeli prime minister and other Israeli officials have pointed to the Popular Resistance Committee as the organization who carried out the attack. So, according to the ITIC, the fact that Netanyahu said something is proof enough, even if the other side completely denies it. more.. e-mail
Qatamon, 1948: The Fall of a Neighborhood
Itamar Radai, Jerusalem Quarterly File8/22/2011
Summer 2011
Introduction
Most studies of the 1948 battle for Jerusalem have focused on the political and military aspects of that struggle. This article aims to fill a gap in the field of social history by taking the Qatamon neighborhood in Jerusalem as a test case to study the transformational processes through which the Palestinian-Arab middle class passed during this crucial period. With very few, if notable, exceptions, this aspect of Palestinian social history under the British Mandate has so far been unduly overlooked.1
The overall education, occupational pursuits, economic conditions, and way of life of the residents of Jerusalem’s Qatamon neighborhood encapsulate the profile of the Mandate-era Palestinian-Arab middle class: bourgeois, generally well-educated, mainly Christian, with an occupational structure similar to that of the new classes emergingin the West since the late eighteenth century.2 In addition to being a quintessential Arab middle class neighborhood, Qatamon is an appropriate object of study because of its strategic location, which rendered it a major locus of fighting in south Jerusalem, inflicting great hardship on its residents, some of whom nevertheless stayed on and tried to maintain a civil life in the shadow of the war.3 The main contention of this essay is that the distinctive middle-class characteristics of the neighborhood accelerated the process of collapse by rendering it ineffectual in responding to a severe crisis during the decline of colonial civil order mainly brought about by Jewish military pressure.

killing Gaza again
In Gaza: 22 Aug 2011 – I’m looking at a split photo: one side is a smiling boy, a chubby-cheeked toddler, and the other his dismembered, burnt corpse, pelvis torn apart. Islam Kraike is one of at least 15 Palestinians killed in Gaza by the Israeli military in the last 4 days. I was going to reach out to my local Canadian media, good ole Torstar Corporation-owned Guelph Mercury –which last posted news about Gaza in 2010 (since NOTHING has happened since then) but then just figured, fuck it, the corporate media’s agenda is to either not report on the current massacre of Gaza period, or to report bil ax , backwards. So here I am self-publishing, in the interest of getting news, words directly from Palestinians in Gaza, my feelings as a has-been in Gaza with loved ones breathing under the bombs, and as a humanely-minded person, which I’d like to dream many still are, corporate…more
Jenin’s Third Intifada under Attack
Palestine Chronicle: 22 Aug 2011 – By Richard Lightbown ‘The location of the Freedom Theatre […is] in the middle of the most attacked and poorest refugee camp in Palestine, the refugee camp of Jenin. We are talking about almost three thousand children under the age of 15 suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. It means they pee in their pants when they are eleven. It means they cannot concentrate; they cannot deal with each other without violence. “This camp […] is [be]sieged by electric fence, all around it. People cannot go out or in unless they have a permit. We have two gates like a big prison, and we are just in the middle, trying to serve this population, trying to bring some normality, some sanity to some people here. “I would say that the Freedom Theatre offers the very basic elements of life to children, to people, to grown-ups, to women, to men: freedom. “And then of…more
