Prisoners take center stage
Daoud Kuttab, Ma’an News Agency10/6/2011
Sumud Ahmad Saadat is the daughter of the leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, kidnapped from the Palestinian Authority’s prison in Jericho by military force.
Saadat is locked up in a jail inside Israel proper, in contravention of the Geneva Conventions, which forbid occupiers to transfer prisoners into the country of occupation. He has been held in solitary confinement for most of the past five years.
Sumud, in her early 20s now, has not seen her father in five years. Attempts to obtain this basic human right through the International Committee of the Red Cross have failed. Neither did an attempt to get redress from the Israeli courts have any result.
A month ago, the Israeli high court accepted the Israeli army lawyer’s claims that if young Sumud would meet her father, he might transmit to her (even across a glass window) some kind of sign or message that would cause violence.
As a result, the high court of the “only democracy in the Middle East” forbade a young woman from seeing her father for the fifth year in a row.
Solitary confinement, banning family visits, collective punishment and depriving prisoners of access to satellite TV are some of the things Palestinian prisoners are subjected to.
Some 6,000 Palestinian prisoners asked for their abolition on September 27. Prisoners’ hunger strike and a disobedience campaign was launched by prisoners who are members of the PFLP following an increase in punitive measures enacted by the Israeli Prison Service. The PFLP prisoners have since been joined by other inmates. more.. e-mail
Settler violence in a time of security
Larry Derfner, +972 Magazine10/5/2011
Right-wing violence in Israel is always provoked by something, we’ve been told. The murders of Palestinian laborers and Israeli Arab bus passengers by two settlers during the disengagement from Gaza was provoked, of course, by the disengagement from Gaza. The drive-by murders of Palestinians during the second intifada were provoked by the second intifada. The Rabin assassination and the two-year hate campaign that preceded it were provoked by the Oslo accord and Palestinian terror attacks. The Hebron massacre by Baruch Goldstein was provoked by the Oslo accord and Palestinan terror attacks. The Jewish terror underground of the early 1980s, involving shootings of Palestinian mayors and college students, as well as an attempt to bomb a Palestinian bus and a plot to blow up the Temple Mount, was provoked by the pullout from Sinai following the peace treaty with Egypt.
There’s always a reason, supposedly. Jewish blood is being spilled by terrorists, the Left is giving the country away to the enemy, the settlers and their allies are being driven to extremes, they’re being backed against the wall, so they’re lashing out in desperation.
This is a popular notion in this country. So why has settler violence been going through the roof again, most recently in Sunday night’s “price tag” torching of a mosque in the Galilee Bedouin village of Tuba Zangaria? Life for Jews in Israel and the West Bank has never been safer than it’s been for the last few years. Palestinian security forces have been working with the Shin Bet and Israeli army to shut down terror, to throw Hamasniks in jail, to even keep big protest rallies from taking place.
Meanwhile, the peace process couldn’t be deader. The Israeli government could hardly be more right-wing. The administration in Washington could hardly be more craven, while Congress has become indistinguishable from the Yesha Council. more.. e-mail
US policy and the Arab Spring
Azmi Ashour, Al-Ahram Weekly10/6/2011
If Washington vetoes Palestinian state recognition in the Security Council it will irreparably harm its standing and interests in the Arab region.
When people in Arab and Islamic societies think of the US, two images pop to mind. The first is that of a superpower with an unmitigated pro-Israeli bias; the second is that of a symbol of Western civilisation and modern scientific and technological progress. The former sparks widespread anger and anti-US hatred; the latter inspires considerable respect for the US and the dream to visit it. This love-hate relationship with the US became more distinct following the onset of the Arab Spring. The popular uprisings that surprised Washington by overthrowing its staunchest allies in Tunisia and Egypt threw into relief the double standards in American foreign policy, as epitomised by the lip-service it paid to the need for democratisation while sustaining decades-long friendships with some of the longest-lived dictatorships in the Arab world. The question now is whether the Arab revolutions will have a concrete effect on US foreign policy towards the region, especially with regard to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
The US’s pursuit of its interests in this region have been characterised by two main constants. One is its fanatical support for Israel, often to the detriment of Arab rights and interests, to which testify the 40 times that Washington availed itself of its right to veto of the Security Council, against any resolution censuring Israel for its abuse of Arab rights. The other is its alliances with despotic regimes in order to realise its economic interests, even if this actively worked against the democratisation and progress of the societies ruled by those regimes. Within this framework, both sides resorted to various stratagems, ruses and various forms of cat-and-mouse to pursue their interests (the US) or to wriggle out of US pressures and perpetuate their rule (the Arab regimes). After the events of 11 September, in particular, the terrorist bugbear was continuously conjured up and both sides became more addicted than ever to playing assorted roles in the Arab- Israeli “peace process” game with no sincere desire for a real solution. more.. e-mail

US Envoys from Hell
Palestine Chronicle: 6 Oct 2011 – By Eric Walberg The 711 coalition deaths in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan last year made 2010 the deadliest one for foreign troops since the US invasion in 2001, continuing the upward trend since 2003. 2011 promises to be even more deadly, and already includes the most spectacular event in this gruesome body count, when insurgents shot down a helicopter in eastern Afghanistan, killing 30 Americans. Civilian deaths — about 5-10 times higher — have followed the same relentless climb, as have purported Taliban deaths which are about 10-20 times higher than the occupiers’ deaths. Deaths of all kinds in Pakistan have sharply increased in the last few years as well, with United States President Barack Obama’s policy of using drones to fight US wars around the world. US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Ambassador Marc Grossman is now touring Central Asia to discuss his “New Silk Road” vision…more
Abbas Bid for Bantustan Exposes Israeli Hypocrisy
Palestine Chronicle: 6 Oct 2011 – By Iqbal Jassat ‚Äì Pretoria Why do you say that there is ‘some merit’ in Abbas’ bid while you vehemently oppose and discredit it? It’s a question many people, including journalists have challenged me with in the last few days as a global audience readied itself to watch the drama unfolding at the United Nations centered on the Palestinian Authority seeking approval for an independent state. In attempting to unpack what clearly appears to be a contradiction in terms, the reality is that while battle lines are being drawn in an arena that for more than six decades can arguably be held responsible for turning its back on the plight of Palestine; the same venue will place the spotlight on Israeli intransigence! The “merit” therefore in the bid attempt is that a confirmed collaborator plunges headlong into an abyss of disaster. But along with him too are the leaders of…more
Libya Helped al-Assad in His UNSC Victory
Palestine Chronicle: 6 Oct 2011 – By Ali Younes It should come as to no surprise that China and Russia decided to veto the European-draft resolution condemning Syria at the Security Council earlier in the week despite the swinging rhetoric that marked the failed attempt to condemn the Syrian regime. One thing for certain about the Russian and Chinese veto is that it should not be understood as an endorsement for the Syrian regime’s brutal crackdown on the peaceful protesters, or as a sign of Chinese and Russian alliance with the Al Assad’s regime. The heart of the matter for the Chinese and the Russians is to make a stand against the Western powers attempt to repeat the same methods used in Libya that eventually led to a regime change and lose their political and economic interests in Libya. Their initial reluctance to join the NATO air campaign against Libya eventually led to their exclusion from…more
Netanyahu Heals Partisan Divide in Washington
Dissident Voice: 6 Oct 2011 – Moses parted the Red Sea. Jesus walked on water. And now Benjamin Netanyahu has healed the partisan divide in Washington D.C., the greatest miracle of all time, according to this morning’s editorial in the New York Times. In a forty-five minute address before a Joint Session of Congress the tough-talking Israeli Prime Minister convinced a heretofore bitterly divided U.S. political class to lay aside its budget battles and concentrate on America’s transcendent purpose: to resettle Palestinian Arabs in outer Mongolia so Israel need no longer face the Arab “demographic threat” to Jewish democracy. The nuance-laden speech, entitled “They Must Go!” was interrupted 637 times by standing ovations, which left many Congress members afflicted with repetitive motion disorders. “He makes it all so clear,” gushed California Senator Barbara Boxer, rubbing an elbow dislocated by continuous applause. “Why should we be at each others’ throats over budget matters when Israel faces extinction at…more
