On the 64th Anniversary of UN Resolution 181 Lebanon’s Palestinians Continue Their Descent
Franklin Lamb, Intifada-Palestine 11/29/2011
Embassy of Palestine, Tripoli, Libya
Every year on November 29, as part of International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Palestinians in Libya as well as approximately a quarter million Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, the descendants of more than 129,000 who were forced into Lebanon during the 1947-48 Nakba, commemorate the infamous United Nations Resolution 181.
Between Nov. 29, 1947, and Jan. 1, 1949, Zionist terrorists depopulated and destroyed more than 530 Palestinian villages and towns, killing more than 13,000 Palestinians and expelling 750,000, approximately half the population.
UN General Assembly resolution 181, adopted on November 29, 1947, purported to divide Palestine between the indigenous inhabitants and European colonists who arrived seeking to occupy and exploit Palestine and create an exclusive Jewish homeland.
Under the UN plan, European Jews were granted more than fifty six per cent of historical Palestine while the native Palestinians, who owned ninety three per cent of the territory, were offered less than forty four percent of their own land.
The partition vote was based on a UN Special Committee (UNSCOP) recommendation to divide the country into three parts: a Palestinian state with a population of 735,000, of which 725,000 were Palestinians and 10,000 Jews; a new Jewish state comprised of 499,000 Jews and 407,000 Palestinians, creating a new state with roughly less than sixty per cent Jewish majority. more.. e-mail
First guide to Palestine on both sides of the wall
Ma’an News Agency 11/29/2011
Ma’an interviews author Sarah Irving.
BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — The first internationally published guide book to Palestine covering the West Bank, Gaza and Palestinian communities in Israel appears on book shelves in the UK this month.
British publisher Bradt released the glossy guide to Palestine “for independent travelers who want to see beyond the conflict-focused reporting of the area and ethnic and religious stereotypes,” a statement from the company said.
Ma’an spoke to the guide’s author Sarah Irving, a human rights observer, tour guide and independent writer.
Why did you decide to write the book about Palestinian communities in Israel as well as West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem?
There were two reasons for this. Firstly, after long discussions with various Palestinian friends, I felt it was important to include Palestinian communities in Israel because it’s important to highlight their continued existence and cultural resilience within the state of Israel. They and their culture are often sidelined or represented as marginal, dangerous and unattractive by many conventional guidebooks to Israel.
I felt it was important to emphasize that they are there and their culture is immensely rich as valuable, and that seeing something of how they are treated within Israel is important to understanding the Israeli state’s attitudes to Palestinians within its current borders as well as those in the Occupied territories. more.. e-mail
Arab spring and the intellectual divide
Ramzy Baroud, Ma’an News Agency 12/1/2011
The so-called ‘Arab Spring’ is creating an intellectual divide that threatens any sensible understanding of the turmoil engulfing several Arab countries.
While it is widely understood that revolutions endeavor to overthrow political structures and aim to change the social order and power paradigm within any given society, there is still no single, inclusive understanding of what actually constitutes a revolution. Nor is there any consensus as to exactly what a revolution is supposed to achieve.
An ordinary Egyptian is likely to determine his/her take on revolution from various angles: measurable economic advancement – or lack thereof; the ability to voice an opinion without fear of censorship or retaliation; the right to participate in collective action, and influence the overall direction of his/her country.
A revolution can also delve into the realm of self-definition. Some Arab collectives have redefined themselves along religious, nationalistic or ideological lines – by re-coloring a flag or rewording a national anthem – in the hope that this would allow them to cement political change through a collective psychological departure from one era into another.
While conceptual depictions of major phenomena may be achievable, their practical application can be elusive. On January 14, just days after the ousting of Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, I warned of the failure to appreciate the unique circumstances of the Tunisian revolution, and the distinctiveness of Tunisian society as a whole:
“There is no harm in expanding a popular experience to understand the world at large and its conflicts. But in the case of Tunisia, it seems that the country is largely understood within a multilayer of contexts, thus becoming devoid of any political, cultural or socio-economic uniqueness….” more.. e-mail

‘Palestine-Israel Peace Long Overdue’
Palestine Chronicle: 30 Nov 2011 – By Jaya Ramachandran – Geneva Some two months after the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas transmitted Palestine’s application for membership to the United Nations to the Secretary-General, high-ranking UN officials have reiterated the need for a just and lasting solution to the question of Palestine, which also ensures the rights of Palestinian Bedouin people. Recalling that sixty-four years ago on November 29, the General Assembly adopted a resolution, dividing the territory known as “mandatory Palestine” into two States; one Jewish, one Arab, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a message, “the establishment of a ?Palestinian State, living in peace next to a secure Israel, is long overdue”.? Ban led a chorus of UN officials on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which has been observed annually on November 29 since 1977, marking 30 years of the partition of the Palestinian state in 1947. “The need to resolve this…more
Lebanon’s Palestinians Continue Their Descent
Palestine Chronicle: 30 Nov 2011 – By Franklin Lamb – Embassy of Palestine, Tripoli, Libya Every year on November 29, approximately a quarter million Palestinian refugees who were forced into Lebanon, along with those in more than 130 countries where they have sought refuge following their ethnic cleansing from their land, commemorate the infamous United Nations Resolution 181. Under the UN plan, European Jews were granted more than fifty six per cent of historical Palestine while the native Palestinians, who owned ninety three per cent of the territory, were…more
Morocco Gets Muslim Brotherhood PM
Palestine Chronicle: 30 Nov 2011 – By Eric Walberg – Cairo Morocco, with its 35 million people, where 1 in 3 are unemployed and poverty is widespread, has had multi-party elections since independence in 1956 without anyone taking much notice. Following a referendum in July with 70 per cent turnout and (a suspicious) 98 per cent approval, the new constitution was ratified in September, and parliamentary elections held last week. In the new constitution, the king gives up his power to appoint the prime minister, agreeing to appoint the leader of the party winning…more

Dissident Voice: 30 Nov 2011 – November 29, 1947 was the date the UN passed the Partition Resolution partitioning Palestine, more or less equally, into a Jewish and an Arab state. In fact, the ethnic cleansing commenced the very next morning when the 75,000 Arab citizens of Haifa were subjected to a campaign of terror jointly by the terrorist group, the Irgun, under Manachem Begin, and the Haganah, the regular militia under David Ben Gurion. The Jewish settlers who had arrived during the previous decade had built their homes higher up the mountain and thus occupied a higher topographical space. From the superior height, they could snipe at the villagers at will. They began doing this while the Jewish troops rolled barrels of burning oil down their roads and then ignited them. When the terrified residents came out to try to extinguish the rivers of fire, they were sprayed with machine gun fire. Another technique was…more
