Politicians line up behind Israeli assault on Gaza
Dimi Reider, +972 Magazine 11/14/2012
Israel launches a fresh operation on the Gaza Strip, killing Hamas leader Ahmed Jabari and several civilians. In the meanwhile, the opposition has never seemed so haggard.
The assassination of Ahmad Jabari, the architect of both the recent Gilad Shalit prisoner swap and, more importantly, the détente that prevailed between Israel and Hamas for the past several years, is an uncharacteristically high-risk gamble by the Netanyahu and Barak duo. It’s uncharacteristic not only because Netanyahu, in the past, has been extremely careful not to upset the apple cart and has repeatedly dialed up the violence in the Gaza Strip and dialed it down again, but also because this round was already being calmed down via an Egypt-brokered ceasefire when the assassination got the go-ahead.
My own hunch, and that of several Israeli observers, is that Barak is the prime mover behind this recent escalation. His has been a consistent voice for stronger Israeli military action in previous rounds of escalation in Gaza, and he stands more to gain from a large-scale military operation. Netanyahu is winning the elections with one hand tied behind his back; Barak and his splinter Independence Party, by contrast, have barely been scratching the electoral barrier. Appearing as a decisive, wily and sophisticated military mind next to a wallowing Netanyahu can only do Barak that much good, and Israeli Twitterati have already replaced “Pillar of Defense” the cringe-inducing, Freud-evoking codename for the operation with “Independence War.”
Be that as it may, Netanyahu has signed up for this offensive and it now bears his name as surely as Cast Lead bears those of Ehud Olmert and Tzipi Livni. In the short term, his gamble might well conclude without political damage (the damage to the lives of Israeli and Gazan residents is clearly of comparatively little consequence to either him or his defense minister, otherwise the deescalation would have been allowed to take its course, as it has throughout Netanyahu’s tenure)…. more.. e-mail

Israel’s second war on Gaza?
Connie Hackbarth, Alternative Information Center 11/14/2012
Israel killed Hamas leader Ahmed Jabari on Wednesday afternoon in an extrajudicial assassination that abruptly ended Egyptian efforts to mediate an end to the fighting between Israel and forces in the Gaza Strip this past week, fighting that left seven Palestinians dead and tens wounded prior to Wednesday’s assassination. Israeli analysts claim this is the beginning of a second war on Gaza.
Israel’s extrajudicial assassination of Ahmed Jabari was not a one-time attack, but further escalation in the aforementioned Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, a fact admitted by Israeli army spokesperson who said that the attack was intended “to severely impair the command and control chain of the Hamas leadership,” and not simply to kill a man Israel describes as having “Israeli blood on his hands.”
Israeli military analysts claim this series of attacks against Palestinian leaders in the Gaza Strip has been planned for months.
Israeli ground forces are ready to enter the Gaza Strip should the decision be taken, said Chief of Staff Benny Gantz, and the government’s political-military cabinet is meeting now for updates on the assassination.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry has declared an emergency situation in embassies throughout the world following the illegal killing of Jabari.
Ahmed Jabari was born in the Shejaiya neighbourhood of Gaza City in 1960 and graduated with a degree in history from the Islamic University in Gaza. Jabari was arrested by Israel in 1982 for his activism within the Fatah party, to which he belonged. It is in Israeli prisons, reports note, that Jabari met fellow prisoners on their way to becoming top activists within Hamas, including Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi, Nizar Rayyan and Salah Shehadeh…. more.. e-mail

Gaza students launch ‘boycott Israel’ campaign
Joe Catron, Gaza City, Electronic Intifada 11/12/2012
Malaka Mohammed, an English literature student at the Islamic University of Gaza (IUG), is the president of the university’s English Language Club for female students. Under her leadership, the club of 15 members has embarked this fall on the Gaza Strip’s first campus-based boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign targeting Israel. “After knowing that there was something called BDS, I made up my mind to do something,” Mohammed said. “So when we had our first meeting, I proposed that we boycott Israeli goods at IUG.”
Student BDS activism in the Gaza Strip began with the January 2009 launch of the Palestinian Students’ Campaign for the Academic Boycott of Israel (PSCABI), part of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI). For nearly four years, the student campaign has organized at campuses across the coastal territory, mostly in support of the academic and cultural boycott of Israel.
But the IUG club’s activities are the first BDS-specific effort in the Gaza Strip based within a particular university, or opposed primarily to the purchase of Israeli products by Palestinians. “We have a special condition here in the Gaza Strip,” Haidar Eid, an English literature professor at Gaza City’s Al-Aqsa University, said. “We have been under a medieval siege since 2006. Often, we can hardly get alternative products. So we understand when people buy Israeli goods because they have no other choice.”
Eid is an activist in PACBI and the Campaign to Open the Rafah Crossing Permanently and Unconditionally. “We encourage people to buy Egyptian, Turkish and Jordanian products smuggled through the tunnels whenever possible. But the priority goes to Palestinian goods,” he added. more.. e-mail

Don’t expect a second-term Obama to take on Israel
Jonathan Cook in Nazareth, Redress 11/14/2012
Barack Obama’s victory in the US presidential election last week was greeted with general unease in Israel.
Surveys conducted outside the US shortly before polling day showed Obama was the preferred candidate in every country but two – Pakistan and Israel. But unlike Pakistan, where the two candidates were equally unpopular, he scored just 22 per cent in Israel against a commanding 57 per cent for Mitt Romney.
Given these figures, it is unsurprising that Israel’s rightwing prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, made little effort to conceal his political sympathies, laying on a hero’s welcome for Romney when he visited Jerusalem in the summer and starring in several of his TV campaign advertisements.
Ehud Olmert, a former Israeli prime minister, accused Netanyahu of “spitting” in the president’s face, warning that Israel would now be exposed to Obama’s second-term wrath.
The general wisdom is that the president, freed of worries about being re-elected, will seek his revenge, both for Netanyahu’s long-term intransigence in the peace process and for interfering in the US campaign.
Newspaper cartoons summed up the mood last week. The liberal Haaretz showed a sweating Netanyahu gingerly putting his head into the mouth of an Obama-faced lion, while the right-wing Jerusalem Post had Netanyahu exclaiming “Oh bummer!” as he read the headlines.
The speculation among Israelis and many observers is that an Obama second term will see much greater pressure on Israel both to make major concessions on Palestinian statehood and to end its aggressive posturing towards Iran over its supposed ambition to build a nuclear warhead.
Such thinking, however, is fanciful…. more.. e-mail

ashamed more than ever of Canadian government: Canada backs Israel’s actions
In Gaza: 14 Nov 2012 – * photo from Gaza under Zionist Israel’s attacks Just like in 2008-2009, Canada loves it when Israel murders Palestinians: “The Canadian government said following Wednesday’s rocket attacks that it will continue to support Israel. “We fundamentally believe that Israel has the right to defend itself and its citizens from terrorist threats,” Rick Roth, a spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, said in a statement. “Far too often, the Jewish people find themselves on the front lines in the struggle against terrorism,” Roth said.” 012/11/14/israel-hamas-airstrike-.html Filed under: Canada , children in Gaza , Israel war on Gaza , Israeli attacks on Gaza , psychological terrormore

Lip Service to Peace
Dissident Voice: 14 Nov 2012 – By Ramzy Baroud – Europe is different, as we are often reminded. The general wisdom is unlike the United States’ unconditional support for Israel. European countries tend to be more balanced in their approach to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Their politicians are less receptive to being bought and sold by pro-Israeli lobbies. Their media is far more inclusive in their coverage – unlike the staunchly one-sided US mainstream media that, at times, are far more pro-Israel than Israeli media itself. While one must concede that no single country’s foreign policy is an exact carbon copy of another, there is little evidence that sets the European Union (EU) apart as a platform of even-handedness and political sensibility. Unlike the United States, however, European bias is far more inconspicuous, and purposely so. No other issue highlights European inconsistency, hypocrisy and even self-defeating policies as that of the EU stance regarding the illegal Jewish settlements in occupied East…more
