Killing Hope: Why Israel Targets Sports in Gaza
Dave Zirin, The Nation, ZNet 11/20/2012
Let’s start with a fact. On November 16, the Israeli Air Force bombed the 10,000-seat Palestine Stadium “into ruins.” The stadium also headquartered the center for youth sports programs throughout the Gaza Strip. This is the second time Israel has flattened the facility. The first was in 2006 and the people of Gaza have spent the last six years rebuilding the fields, stands, and offices to keep the national soccer team as well as club sports alive in the region.
I’m sure the reaction to this fact will depend on what side people take in the current conflict. For the Israeli government and their supporters, they promised “collective punishment” following the Hamas rockets fired over the border and they are delivering “collective punishment.” Matan Vilnai, deputy defense minister of Israel has in the past threatened a “holocaust” and Gilad Sharon, son of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, called for Gaza to be the new “Hiroshima.” In this context, a sports facility must seem like little more than target practice.
For those attending daily demonstrations against the carnage, this news of a stadium’s destruction must also be seen as an irrelevancy. After all according to The Wall Street Journal, 90 Palestinians, including 50 civilians, have been killed in Gaza. 225 children are among the more than 700 injured and these numbers are climbing. Israeli ground troops are massing at the border and President Obama can only bring himself to defend Israel without criticism. There is only so much concern for a stadium people can be expected to muster.
I think however that we should all take a moment to ask the question, “Why?” Why has the Palestinian sports infrastructure, not to mention Palestinian athletes, always been a target of the Israeli military? Why has the Palestinian domestic soccer league only completed seven seasons since its founding in 1977? Why are players commonly subjected to harassment and violence, not to mention curfews, checkpoints, and all sorts of legal restrictions on their movement? Why were national team players Ayman Alkurd, Shadi Sbakhe and Wajeh Moshate killed by the Israeli Defense Forces during the 2009 military campaign?…. — See also:Source: The Nation more.. e-mail

‘No Place is Safe’: After Assault’s Worst Day, Gaza Doctor Says Israel Terrorizing Civilians
Democracy Now! 11/20/2012
Interview with Dr. Mona El-Farra, director of Gaza Projects for the Middle East Children’s Alliance and the Health Chair of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society of the Gaza Strip
AMY GOODMAN: For more, we go directly to Gaza where we’re joined by Dr. Mona El-Farra. She is the director of Gaza projects for the Middle East Children’s Alliance and the Health Chair for the Palestinian Red Crescent Society of the Gaza Strip. She writes the blog “From Gaza, with love.” Dr. El-Farra, can you start off by describing what it is like there today?
DR. MONA EL-FARRA: Today, since the early hours of the morning, it is quiet. It is not as violent and tense as it was in the last five days. It is quiet, but airplanes are still in the sky. Drones are in the skies. We can hear intermittent shelling here and there. People are tense, are hoping for a cease fire. But, in the mean time, we don’t want a cease-fire at any cost. We want guarantees from Israel that this will not happen again. This is the situation in Gaza. The number of killed, you have mentioned it, but I’m sorry to say that the majority of the killing are amongst women and children. Some homes have been knocked down to the ground and toppled on civilians, and the Israeli Army later on said we are sorry, it was a mistake. How come it is a mistake to kill, for example, twelve civilians in their homes with women and children, and just what we hear is, sorry it was a mistake.
What is happening is not a war….The situation is much, much different than Gaza when we have terrified children in Gaza. Children who do not have enough water, don’t have enough food, no medication; the medications are getting less and less in the stores and in the medical facilities. And with all that, children who have no safe place, no place safe in Gaza….Continuous shelling every other minute, either directly in my area — the airplanes are there and they hit around me, 100 meters, sometimes, from my building…. — See also: Dr. El-Farra’s blog: From Gaza, with Love more.. e-mail

Top 10 Myths About Israel’s Attack on Gaza
Juan Cole, AlterNet 11/19/2012
These misconceptions are spread by the American media.
     1. Israeli hawks represent themselves as engaged in a ‘peace process’ with the Palestinians in which Hamas refuses to join. In fact, Israel has refused to cease colonizing and stealing Palestinian land long enough to engage in fruitful negotiations with them. Tel Aviv routinely announces new, unilateral house-building on the Palestinian West Bank . There is no peace process. It is an Israeli and American sham. Talking about a peace process is giving cover to Israeli nationalists who are determined to grab everything the Palestinians have and reduce them to penniless refugees (again).
     2. Actions such as the assault on Gaza can achieve no genuine long-term strategic purpose. They are being launched to ensure that Jewish-Israelis are the first to exploit key resources. Rattling sabers at the Palestinians creates a pretext for further land-grabs and colonies on Palestinian land. That is, the military action against the people of Gaza is a diversion tactic; the real goal is Greater Israel, an assertion of Israeli sovereignty over all the territory once held by the British Mandate of Palestine.
     3. Israeli hawks represent their war of aggression as in ‘self-defense.’ But the UK Israeli chief rabbi admitted on camera that that the Gaza attack actually ‘had something to do with Iran.’
     4. Israeli hawks demonize the Palestinians of Gaza as “bad neighbors” who don’t accept Israel. But 40% of the people in Gaza are refugees, mostly living in refugee camps, from families in pre-1948 Palestine that had lived there for millennia.
They were expelled from what is now Israel in the 1948 Zionist ethnic cleansing campaign. Israelis are now living in their homes and farming their land, and they were never paid any reparations for the crimes done to them…. more.. e-mail

Letter to Abbas: Visit us in Gaza
Issam Younis, Ma’an News Agency 11/20/2012
This is a historic moment, that must be taken up. We’ve waited for you in Gaza for six days. We’re still waiting; your people who are being attacked and slaughtered in Gaza.
It is not acceptable anymore – no matter what those surrounding you make it look like to you – that you do not come. I do not invite you to show solidarity with Gaza, but to be in Gaza and with Gaza.
We are waiting in Gaza for you and all the heads of Palestinian political parties. The advocates of divide can stay back in Ramallah. This scandalous schism must end now and here; the schism that made your people bleed.
The Palestinian national platform must be restored and Palestinian striving for freedom must be agreed on by all. It is our engagement with the occupation that we must magnify; politically, legally, and diplomatically.
We are waiting for you to come.
I am sure you will call the Arab leaders, by whose visits we will be honored; including Egyptian President Muhammad Mursi and Jordanian King Abdullah, to be part of the historic event that is ending the intra-Palestinian divide from Gaza and in Gaza.
We are waiting to know that you have ordered PLO diplomats in Geneva, New York, Vienna, and Paris, and in all UN offices, to immediately act to convene the UN General Assembly, Human Rights Council, UNESCO and others to condemn the crimes perpetrated against our people in Gaza, and do all they can to secure that these crimes be investigated and punished. more.. e-mail

Why Gaza?
Justin Raimondo, Antiwar.com 11/19/2012
      Because it’s all about politics
“Hamas was ready to negotiate. Jabari was going to drop a gigantic ‘peace bomb’ on Tel Aviv, and Netanyahu and his cabinet launched a preemptive strike to make sure it never hit its target.”

The Israeli assault on Gaza was triggered Nov. 8 when the IDF crossed the border and murdered Ahmed Younis Khader Abu Daqqa, a 13-year-old boy playing football in his front yard: the official explanation for this action was an alleged weapons cache, supposedly stored nearby, but no credible evidence supporting this contention has come to light. In retaliation, Hamas launched a — generally ineffective — counterattack, and the conflict escalated.
However, there had been rumblings for months of the oncoming Israeli assault, and this incident was merely a pretext: the real reason is that the Israelis were deathly afraid, not of Hamas’s pathetic attempts to make a dent in “Iron Dome,” but of the prospects for a general ceasefire, albeit not a settlement of the outstanding issues, which was in the works well before Netanyahu unleashed the latest blitzkrieg.
According to Gershon Baskin, initiator and negotiator of the secret back channel for the release of Gilad Shalit, Ahmed al-Jabari, leader of the military wing of Hamas, was ready for a peace deal — which was in the works in the days before Jabari was assassinated in a targeted Israeli strike:
“My indirect dealings with Mr. Jabari were handled through my Hamas counterpart, Ghazi Hamad, the deputy foreign minister of Hamas, who had received Mr. Jabari’s authorization to deal directly with me.” more.. e-mail

Abu Tomaa house, Deir al Balah, now an F-16d crater
In Gaza: 20 Nov 2012 – The home of the Abu Tomaa family, bombed today first by an Israeli drone and minutes later by an Israeli F-16. Tuesday being a market day in Deir al Balah (despite the continuous Israeli bombings, life must go on in Gaza, in spite of the threat of being on the street), not many were near the home at the time of the bombing. That said, at least 5 were injured in the bombing, including 2 children. A fire broke out in the area, and neighbouring houses were damaged in the bombing. At Deir’s Aqsa hospital we watched as casualties came in via screeching cars, ambulances if lucky. The blast sent a jeep beside the house up onto and over the roof of a neighbouring house, leaving half of the mangled jeep on the roof and the other half on the ground beyond the home. Much damage done to the neighbouring…more

Yet Another False Flag?
Dissident Voice: 20 Nov 2012 – It’s all but impossible for the vast majority of us to know what’s really happening in the concentration camp of Gaza at the moment: none of the world’s media can be relied upon to report the truth. It would seem that Hamas is indeed behind some recent rocket attacks against various places in occupied Palestine, but who’s behind Hamas? Given that the whole world knows that Osama Bin laden and Al Qaeda were originally made in the USA would it be very extraordinary to discover, in a hundred years time that Hamas had a similar provenance? The reason the question is not quite as bizarre as it would first appear to the uninitiated is quite simple: an attack by the feeble and impoverished inmates of Gaza Concentration Camp on one of the most ruthless, unaccountable and mightiest armies on Earth is tantamount to committing suicide. Although committing suicide is a…more
