The legacy of aggression and impunity: an interview with Noam Chomsky
Ramona Wadi, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 6/14/2013
Professor Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, logician, historian, political critic, and activist.
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
“The violent action of opponents of the United States and its allies is terrorism. The violent – often very more violent action of the US and its clients is described as self-defence.” With these words, Professor Noam Chomsky, the famed linguist and political activist, began our discussion. We covered the manipulation of language and international law, as well as Israel’s culture of impunity with regard to Palestine, within a global framework of oppression.
Bolstered by an undeserved legitimacy which remains unchallenged by international organisations such as the United Nations, the US and Israel have perfected aggression into dual narratives. “Every relevant term of political discourse has essentially two meanings,” suggested Prof. Chomsky. “One is its literal meaning. The other is the meaning that is used for political warfare and the terms are applied quite differently to others than they are for themselves.”
Evoking the US as a protector of human rights violations, the discussion turned to the systematic aggression against “enemies”. Memories of Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait and the US-backed invasions of Lebanon led to Chomsky discussing aggression from the manipulation of international law which is submissive to force. “The world is not ruled by its law, it is ruled by force. I mean, there’s a pretext that it is ruled by law but that is false. When the US wants to violate international law, it does so. And when one of its clients violates international law with the protection of the United States, it does so. That is true of all international law. The Nuremburg judgment describes aggression as a supreme international crime differing from other war crimes, taking into account the evil that follows.” He cited as examples the US invasion of Iraq and Israel’s invasion of Lebanon. “The invasion of Iraq is a supreme international crime; the killings of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, the displacement, the exile of millions of others, the destruction of much of the country, the Shia – Sunni conflict which has torn Iraq to shreds and is now tearing the region to shreds and leading to much worse.”…. more.. e-mail
Notes on the idea of a land swap with Israel
Majed Azam, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 6/16/2013
‘…partition has never been a just solution for a people under occupation at the hands of an occupying power, which is the situation in Palestine’
The Arab League’s agreement to the idea of a land swap between the Palestinian Authority and Israel as part of any possible peace agreement between the two has prompted a number of reactions. Most were criticisms of the organisation for bending under American pressure to whet Israel’s appetite for ever more Arab and Palestinian concessions. However, such politically-prompted criticism ignored not only the Palestinian Authority’s previous acceptance of the principle of land swaps but also the philosophy upon which the premise of the peace process is based. That is, the Palestinians are to concede 75 per cent of historic Palestine, with the implication also that they must give up the right of return for refugees.
It is worth noting that the idea of a land swap has always been on the official Palestinian political agenda since the peace process was launched 20 years ago. During Yasser Arafat’s presidency it was certainly implied and it has become clearer with Mahmoud Abbas at the helm. Negotiators Saeb Erekat and Riad Almalki have explained that the Arab League position is nothing but a restatement of previous Palestinian positions and negotiating documents. When Abbas met the then Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in the spring and summer of 2008 the latter offered the idea of a maximum 6 per cent land swap. The PA agreed to a minor swap – as the Arab League said – equal in value to a maximum of 2 per cent of the West Bank designated for a Palestinian state to be equal in area to the land occupied in June 1967.
Thus, the Arab League’s position is in accord with the principle that has prevailed over the past three decades; the Arab states will accept whatever the Palestinians accept and they cannot be asked to be “more royal than the king”. In other words, the Arab League cannot be asked to show more loyalty to Palestinian issues than Palestinians themselves, and if the Palestinians agreed to a land swap then why blame the Arabs for accepting the same idea. more.. e-mail
Israeli death merchants and Palestinian guinea pigs
Gilad Atzmon, Redress 6/15/2013
“The Lab” is a new groundbreaking Israeli documentary film that redefines our entire understanding of the Jewish state, its aims, its identity and its global destructive role. It is a fundamental and most important commentary on Israel.
In “The Lab”, Director Yotam Feldman exposes the Israeli military industry and its operation, and interviews key figures in Israel’s “security’ trade. He elaborates on the role of the industry within the Israeli society and economy – in the last few years Israeli “security” exports reached an unprecedented 7 billion US dollars a year. A full 20 per cent of Israeli exports are military or military related. Approximately 150,000 families in Israel are dependent on that industry. Israel is now the fourth biggest military exporter.
Here is a clip from “The Lab” [link follows]
In the last decade every Israeli military operation led to an immediate and sharp increase in Israeli military export around the world: weaponry, systems, intelligence, strategies, doctrines, knowledge and experience.
Feldman gives us a glimpse into a very organized universe. We visit Israeli weapon fairs around the world and see arenas filled to capacity with foreign generals, officials and diplomats shopping for Israeli military products. The message is clear: the 7 billion dollars is just part of the story. The Israeli military elite is now deeply interwoven with the political and military elite of every country around the globe. This emerging Israeli business buys the Jewish state influence and support.
“The Lab” makes it evidently clear that the Palestinian civilian population in the West Bank and Gaza are viewed as guinea pigs for Israeli tactics, weaponry and fighting philosophy (“Fighting Torah” – Torat Lechima – as the Israelis call it). The destruction of the Palestinians has now been transformed into a very profitable industry. We are dealing here with nothing short of highly calculated murder. — See also: Vimeo: The Lab more.. e-mail
UN justice champion Richard Falk targeted (again)
Stuart Littlewood, Redress 6/15/2013
Vengeful Zio-schemers sharpen their knives
The US ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Council, Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe, has branded Richard Falk as “unfit to serve in his role as a UN Special Rapporteur.”
It seems that in his role monitoring the occupied Palestinian territories he’s in the habit of expressing views that don’t coincide with the twisted dogma of the pro-Israel lobby and its handmaidens, like Donahoe and Susan Rice, the outgoing US ambassador to the UN and National Security adviser-designate This attack is merely the latest in a long line of attempts to smear, vilify and dump Falk.
Donahoe’s biography on the US mission website includes this high-tone gem. “On the front lines of the Obama administration’s strategy of multilateral engagement to promote democracy and respect for universal human rights, Ambassador Donahoe and the US delegation work to ensure that the courageous voices of human rights defenders from around the globe are heard.”
Yes, but only if they’re singing off the Tel Aviv hymn-sheet, lyrics by Mark Regev, also known as Mark Freiberg, Israel’s Australian-born chief propagandist.
She told the Human Rights Council:
“The best way to truly address human rights issues in Israel and the Palestinian territories is to end the underlying conflict and forge a comprehensive peace. For this reason, the United States continues to work vigorously on a simultaneous two-track strategy….” more.. e-mail
The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and the Challenge of the Renaissance Dam
Palestine Chronicle: 16 Jun 2013 – By Nath Aldalala’a Not since its foundation in 1928, has the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt been beset with difficulties such as those it now faces. The primary challenge now confronting the movement results from the very privilege of its success, and it is my contention that after waiting for over eight decades, its power-base has come to fruition at precisely the wrong time. The current situation in the region is not one that will foster a lasting popularity of the movement, and I foresee a number of factors conspiring against any continued buoyancy in their fortunes. Primarily, executive power in Egypt is not necessarily what may be perceived as civil governance: rather, it is grounded on notions that stem from the militarization of governing. The foundation of the modern state in Egypt came about precisely through this militarized mode of leadership which commenced with the regime of Jamal Abdul Nasser…more
