Palestinian development under occupation is a delusion
Nabil Al Sahli, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 6/25/2013
The notion of Palestinian economic development while under Israeli occupation has again been promoted, notably by US Secretary of State John Kerry, as the means to advance the cause of peace through negotiations. Those following such matters in Palestine fear that media hype will blind people to the impossibility of achieving sustainable economic development while Israel continues to occupy, settle and Judaise Palestinian territory.
Talk of economic development under such circumstances ignores the fact that Israel controls the most important keys to the Palestinian economy. Studies indicate that Israel dominates about 96 per cent of all Palestinian imports and exports, and now the deficit in the Palestinian balance of payments is the foundation of a very forced relationship between the Palestinian and Israeli economies.
As a result of the decline in the Palestinian economy, which is due to Israeli efforts aimed at marginalising its various sectors, thousands of individuals from the Palestinian labour force have been driven to find work inside Israel, benefiting the Israeli economy, not their own.
The land itself is one of the most important elements of production which can boost future development but it requires the dismantling of the key aspects of the Israeli occupation such as the illegal settlements and checkpoints in order for the land to fulfil that role. The occupation, therefore, is actually stifling the means of production on Palestinian land, to the detriment of the economy. Despite the talk of economic development and negotiations, the Israeli government under Benjamin Netanyahu has continued to build and expand illegal settlements all over the occupied West Bank, removing ever more land from the Palestinian economic equation. Today there are more than half-a-million illegal Jewish settlers in strategically-placed settlements in the West Bank; 200,000 of them live in occupied Jerusalem, which is now surrounded by settlements, cutting the city off from its natural West Bank hinterland. more.. e-mail

Collision course: Plan to displace tens of thousands of Bedouin passes first Knesset vote
Noam Sheizaf, +972 Magazine 6/25/2013
The implementation of the Prawer Plan for unrecognized villages in the Negev has become a major policy objective for the Netanyahu government.
Following one of the most heated debates the Israeli parliament has seen in recent years, the Knesset approved the Prawer-Begin Plan for the Arrangement of Bedouin-Palestinian Settlement in the Negev yesterday (Monday). Commonly referred to as the Prawer Plan, the new legislation will allow the government to destroy dozens of so-called “unrecognized” villages in the South and remove between 30-40,000 Bedouin from their homes.
According to the plan, those Bedouin citizens who have registered land claims will be offered monetary compensation or land in an area designated for resettlement.
Following demands from the right-wing Jewish Home party, a new article was added to the bill at the last minute, stipulating that the government’s compensation offer will expire after a certain period of time; failure to comply with the process will not only result in forced removal to the relocation zones but also a loss of monetary compensation or land, which would have previously been offered.
This is the largest attempted eviction of a native Palestinian population by Israel in decades. At the end of the process, all remaining Bedouin land claims will be erased from the state record.
During the Knesset debate, several Palestinian members of Knesset tore the bill before leaving the room. Due to opposition to the bill from the Right – settler groups object to giving any land rights to the Bedouin – none of the Likud ministers were willing to defend the bill in the name of the government. The offer ended up passing in a very narrow vote, 43-40, thanks to the support of Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid party, which also sent one of its ministers to defend the law. more.. e-mail

Palestine photo project – 10 years later
Aisha Mershani, Gofundme.com, Israeli Occupation Archive 6/25/2013
Ten years ago, I began a project to document the lives of everyday Palestinians non-violently resisting Israeli occupation. Since 2003, I have photographed and gathered testimonies from Palestinian communities that have resisted the building of the Wall. After six years away, I am returning to the West Bank in the summer of 2013 to complete this project. My goal is to document and share stories and images of everyday Palestinian non-violent resistance with the aim of building global solidarity with the Palestinian people. I have self-funded my work thus far. I am now asking my community for support with the completion of the last stage of this ten-year project.
     Background
From 2003-2005, I worked on the ground in the West Bank photographing military checkpoints, demonstrations, house demolitions, destroyed villages, and the daily lives of Palestinians living under occupation. My photographs have been exhibited in the US, Israel and Europe and published in several websites and books. These photographs, which cannot be seen in mainstream media, expose the reality of life in the West Bank by highlighting the Palestinian nonviolent resistance movement and the steadfastness of the Palestinian people who struggle daily to remain on their land. In 2007, I returned to the West Bank to gather testimonies from individuals in the photos. My aim was to give a back-story to the photo, as each image was deeper than the moment I was able to capture. Within these testimonies, the subjects of my photos were able to tell their own stories of resistance and struggle.
     Vision
During the summer of 2013, I will complete this decade-long project by returning to each village that resisted the Wall and settlement construction, from Jayyous to the Hebron Hills. I will meet with the individuals whose images I captured in 2007 and 2003-2005 to gather their stories and images…. — See also: Source: Gofundme.com more.. e-mail

Sodomy, Locusts, and Cholera: A Jerusalem Witness
Sami Hadawi, Jerusalem Quarterly File 6/25/2013
      Spring 2013
Editor’s introduction: Sami Hadawi’s Early Years
This is the first of two selections Jerusalem Quarterly is excerpting from the parts of the memoirs of Sami Hadawi (1904-2004) dealing with his childhood and early years. Hadawi was a leading expert on land issues in Palestine. His unpublished memoirs were distributed to his family and friends before he died in Toronto at the age of one hundred years and one month. He was a relentless fighter on behalf of Palestinian refugees and their rights, for which he received the Jerusalem Prize from Yasir Arafat in 2002. His book Palestinian Rights and Losses, published by al Saqi in 1998, was a thorough review of the survey of Palestinian landed property undertaken by the UNCCP, and a critique of its findings. One of the most controversial features of this episode is Sami’s narrative about his family origins.
His father appears as an enigmatic character with very little known about his family except that they were German, possibly Templer missionaries in Palestine. Wasif Jawhariyyeh, who was a family friend and Hadawi’s colleague in the Land Registry in the early 1920s, refers to his father as a German Jew who converted to Christianity along with his mother in the Eye Hospital in Baq‘a. His mother, also according to Jawhariyyeh, was a Muslim woman from Mt Hebron. Wasif visited Sami and his family on a number of occasions in Me’a She’arim. (See al Quds al Uthmaniyya fil Mudhakkarat al Jawhariyyah.) If this story of his origin is true, then Sami Hadawi would be the product of the three religious communities of Palestine, making his conflicted family roots a most representative lineage of all communities in Palestine.
From Sami Hadawi’s The Story of My Life
     Birth and Early Childhood
I was born in Jerusalem during the first decade of the twentieth century into a middleclass Christian family with an Anglican background.1 At that time, it was not possible in Arab circles for male and female to intermingle, fall in love, and decide their own destiny…. more.. e-mail

Stamping Impunity on Israel’s War Crimes
Palestine Chronicle: 25 Jun 2013 – By Vacy Vlazna Israel and Australia’s joint projects normalizing Israel’s war crimes and crimes against humanity has sunk deeper in the degenerate mire of hasbara (propaganda & lies); “So projects that constitute normalization are not about freedom, justice or liberation, but about numbing our minds to the horror of the occupation, so we accept it as normal, as permanent, as an unchangeable fixed reality”! (1) In May, Australia Post and Israel Post collaboratively issued two stamps commemorating the Australian Light Horse and the WWI Battle of Beersheba in Palestine. The $2.60 stamp features contemporary images of Australian Light Horsemen. The 60c stamp features the statue of an Australian Light Horseman in the Park of the Australian Soldier, funded by the Pratt Foundation, at Beersheba. ANZAC heroic courage and endurance warrants commemoration but the issue of the stamps entailed a cynical rewriting of Australian war history that deflects ANZAC honor to…more

Disputes over the Nile amidst Challenging Times for Egypt
Palestine Chronicle: 25 Jun 2013 – By Mohamed El Mokhtar From the great lakes of East Africa to the majestic highlands of Ethiopia passing through the fertile valleys of Nubia to Egypt’s delta, the Nile River crosses many countries and diverse landscapes. Unparalleled in its length, the mighty river, a crucible of ancient civilizations, continues its endless journey, having meandered in solitude throughout the glorious semi-arid lands of Egypt, to slowly deliver its precious load to its final destination: The Mediterranean Sea. Mystic symbol of pride and glory, the Nile has also been a source of fear and anxiety, hence the feelings of passion its discussion often generates. Once called the gift of the Nile by the historian Herodotus, Egypt is particularly dependent on it for its vital water supply and livelihood. Its vulnerability to the vagaries of upstream countries explains somehow its bouts of anger and sporadic nervousness. The current dispute with Ethiopia is an…more

From Tahrir to Taksim, is it Time for a Fifth International?
Dissident Voice: 25 Jun 2013 – Those passing through New York’s Union Square on June 16 witnessed a spectacle that to an outside observer might have seemed incongruous. Approximately 100 people stood on steps leading to a steed-mounted George Washington cast in bronze. They were chanting and waving Turkish and Mexican flags. At their feet someone had scrawled “DEMOCRACY NOW” in large chalk letters. The Turkish flags fluttered in the grip of activists in solidarity with protesters occupying public spaces across Turkey; those waving Mexican flags were supporters of the  Yo Soy 132 movement , which arose in the lead up to a disputed election last summer but has since encompassed struggles for land redistribution and media reform, and against corruption. “What we want is democracy,” said Angie Galindo, a Yo Soy 132 activist visiting from Mexico. “The same as in Turkey.” Though they were fewer in number, Brazilian nationals were there as well, voicing solidarity for…more
