Our wretched Jewish state
Gideon Levy, Haaretz, Desert Peace 7/6/2014
Now we know: In the Jewish state, there is pity and humane feelings only for Jews, rights only for the Chosen People. The Jewish state is only for Jews.
The youths of the Jewish state are attacking Palestinians in the streets of Jerusalem, just like gentile youths used to attack Jews in the streets of Europe. The Israelis of the Jewish state are rampaging on social networks, displaying hatred and a lust for revenge, unprecedented in its diabolic scope. Some unknown people from the Jewish state, purely based on his ethnicity. These are the children of the nationalistic and racist generation – Netanyahu’s offspring.
For five years now, they have been hearing nothing but incitement, scaremongering and supremacy over Arabs from this generation’s true instructor, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Not one humane word, no commiseration or equal treatment.
They grew up with the provocative demand for recognition of Israel as a “Jewish state,” and they drew the inevitable conclusions. Even before any delineation of what a “Jewish state” means – will it be a state that dons tefillin (phylacteries), kisses mezuzot (doorpost fixtures with prayer scrolls), sanctifies charms, closes down on the Sabbath and keeps strict kashrut laws? – the penny has dropped for the masses.
The mob was the first to internalize its true significance: a Jewish state is one in which there is room only for Jews. The fate of Africans is to be sent to the Holot detention center in the Negev, while that of Palestinians is to suffer from pogroms. That’s how it works in a Jewish state: only this way can it be Jewish.
In the Jewish state-in-the-making, there is no room even for an Arab who strives his utmost to be a good Arab….more.. e-mail
American Cousin of ‘Revenge’ Victim Beaten by Israeli Soldiers
Forward 7/5/2014
Tampa Teenager Jailed — Police Claim He Resisted
The American cousin of suspected Palestinian revenge attack victim was beaten and imprisoned by Israeli troops during protests before the funeral of the Jerusalem teen, Arab-American activists charged.
Tariq Khdeir, 15, who is a tenth-grader in Tampa, Fla., suffered serious injuries in the July 3 beating and is being held under police guard at a hospital, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a prominent advocacy group.
Activists demanded American officials intervene with Israel to win his release — and take action against the soldiers involved.
“It is the duty of American officials to intervene and secure the release of an American citizen who was so viciously attacked and denied medical treatment,” said CAIR-Florida Chief Executive Director Hassan Shibly in a press release.
His parents, Suha and Salah Khdeir, said their son was detained but had been treated at an Israeli hospital.
Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri said that Tariq Khdeir had resisted arrest and attacked officers, the Associated Press reported. He was detained with a slingshot in his possession used to hurl stones at police, Samri claimed.
Tariq Khdeir’s father, Salah, said he witnessed his son’s arrest and insisted the boy was not involved in the violence, the Associated Press reported.
Khdeir is a high school sophomore in Tampa, who was visiting his Palestinian relatives in Shuafat, Jerusalem, for the first time in over a decade when he was beaten and detained, Haaretz reported. — See also: Beaten Florida Cousin Called ‘Fun-Loving’ All-American Teen and VIDEO: American Cousin of ‘Revenge’ Victim Speaks Out After Beating more.. e-mail
Ex-Shin Bet Chief: Israeli Illusions Fueled Blowup
Yuval Diskin, translated by J.J. Goldberg, J.J. Goldberg blog, Forward 7/5/2014
….Dear friends: Take a few moments to read the following words and share them with others. I see the severe and rapid deterioration of the security situation in the territories, Jerusalem and the Triangle and I’m not surprised. Don’t be confused for a moment. This is the result of the policy conducted by the current government, whose essence is: Let’s frighten the public over everything that’s happening around us in the Middle East, let’s prove that there’s no Palestinian partner, let’s build more and more settlements and create a reality that can’t be changed, let’s continue not dealing with the severe problems of the Arab sector in Israel, let’s continue not solving the severe social gaps in Israeli society. This illusion worked wonderfully as long as the security establishment was able to provide impressive calm on the security front over the last few years as a result of the high-quality, dedicated work of the people of the Shin Bet, the IDF and the Israel Police as well as the Palestinians whose significant contribution to the relative calm in the West Bank should not be taken lightly.
However, the rapid deterioration we’re experiencing in the security situation did not come because of the vile murder of Naftali, Eyal and Gil-Ad, may their memories be blessed. The deterioration is first and foremost a result of the illusion that the government’s inaction on every front can actually freeze the situation in place, the illusion that “price tag” is simply a few slogans on the wall and not pure racism, the illusion that everything can be solved with a little more force, the illusion that the Palestinians will accept everything that’s done in the West Bank and won’t respond despite the rage and frustration and the worsening economic situation, the illusion that the international community won’t impose sanctions on us, that the Arab citizens of Israel won’t take to the streets at the end of the day because of the lack of care for their problems, and that the Israeli public will continue submissively to accept the government’s helplessness in dealing with the social gaps that its policies have created and are worsening, while corruption continues to poison everything good, and so on and so on.
But anyone who thinks the situation can tread water over the long run is making a mistake, and a big one…. more.. e-mail

Rachel Fraenkel Touches Hearts With Open Door Policy
The families of murdered Israeli teen Naftali Fraenkel and murdered Palestinian teen Mohammed Abu Khdeir are drawing comfort from an unexpected source: each other.
Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat took to Facebook on Sunday to write about an “emotional and special telephone conversation between two families that have lost their sons.” He said that during his visit to the Fraenkel family home, he had a chance to speak to Hussein Abu Khdeir, Mohammed’s father, and express pain at the “barbaric” murder of his son.
Barkat then suggested that Abu Khdeir speak to Yishai Fraenkel, the uncle of Naftali Fraenkel who recently told the press that “the life of an Arab is equally precious to that of a Jew. Blood is blood, and murder is murder, whether that murder is Jewish or Arab.” The two men took Barkat’s advice and comforted one another by telephone.
In a separate visit organized by Rabbi Rafi Ostroff, chair of the religious council of Gush Etzion, Palestinians from the Hebron area showed up at the door of the Fraenkel family, looking to comfort the bereaved.
Asked why they had come, one Palestinian said, “Things will only get better when we learn to cope with each other’s pain and stop getting angry at each other. Our task is to give strength to the family and also to take a step toward my nation’s liberation. We believe that the way to our liberation is through the hearts of Jews.”
He later said that the visit went very well from his perspective. “They received us very, very nicely. The mother [Rachel Fraenkel] was incredible.” more.. e-mail
Israel’s War on Palestinian Journalists
Palestine Chronicle: 6 Jul 2014 – By Steven MacMillan For years now, the government of Israel has pursued increasingly belligerent policies towards Palestinian journalists who cover the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the expansion of the illegal settlements program. On the 2nd July, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) denounced Israel’s treatment of a Palestinian TV crew who were covering an altercation between Palestinians and Israeli forces at the Shuafat Refugee Camp in East Jerusalem – where living conditions are desperate and it is often without running water. According to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS), the Israeli forces fired gas canisters, stun grenades and rubber coated bullets towards them, injuring 2 of the crew. The President of the IFJ Jim Boumelha strongly criticised the attack: “The blatant disregard of the Israeli government and its forces for the rights, freedom and lives of Palestinian journalists must end now. Media freedom is being undermined, basic human rights are…more
