Israel s self constructed image is crumbling
Sam Bahour, Arabic Media Internet Network (AMIN)7/4/2014
The reignited cycle of violence in Palestine and Israel provides the Israeli government with exactly what it has been begging for months for, violence. However, for once, Israel may be facing a new fact of life as the sole military power in the conflict, it has the full ability to start a widespread campaign of violence, but it may no longer be the party who single-handedly decides how it ends. This particular round of violence has the potential to surprisingly end with political progress towards peace.
If this new, heartbreaking round of violence is what finally brings an end to the 46 years of Israeli military occupation, then the 11 Israelis and Palestinians who so brutally lost their lives this past two weeks would not have died in vain.
I refer not of the usual violence that the world has become numb to, such as 46 years of military occupation of Palestinians and their lands, nor the cries of desperation from Gaza that are stupidly expressed by misguided militants launching unguided, homemade-like projectiles indiscriminately into Israeli cities, but rather an escalation in violence that allows Israel to open the only playbook it knows in managing the conflict, one based on more violence.
This sad round of yet more Palestinian-Israeli violence is creating a nightmare scenario for the Israeli government. The extremist parts of the Jewish Israeli community and Jewish diaspora, particularly American Jews, are being seen in the open and across social media venues calling for Israel to ‘Kill all the Arabs’ and ‘Bomb Gaza into a parking lot’. Worse yet, Jewish Israelis are suspected of perpetrating a horrendous hate crime in Jerusalem, the murder, mutilation, and burning of a 16 year old Palestinian Jerusalemite who was walking home from morning prayers. The world is getting a peek into the Israel that Palestinians have been complaining about forever.
Shockingly, to the west, some of the violent outbursts coming out of Israel are being made by senior Israeli officials, including current ministers….more..e-mail

Will Hamas escalate?
Ahmed Al-Sayed, Gaza, Al-Ahram Weekly7/3/2014
As Israel ramps up air strikes, in retaliation for the murder of three settlers, responsibility for which Hamas denies, analysts weigh whether a major conflagration is immanent.
The discovery of the bodies of three young abducted Israeli settlers Monday night drew a strong rebuke seen in precision strikes on 34 targets mostly belonging to Hamas in the Gaza Strip overnight. A Palestinian from the group Hamas was also shot dead.
Meetings of the Israeli security cabinet ended up with no clear-cut decision on the scope of any further action in the coastal enclave, or in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli army proposed considered and moderate actions against militants in the West Bank, officials said. Any sustained campaign there could undermine US-backed Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas.
Since three young settlers went missing near the settlement of Gush Etzion on 12 June, Israel and Hamas have been locked in a battle of wills that opened all possibilities from continual harassment to frontal attack.
No major Palestinian group has so far claimed the abduction of the settlers, but Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has no doubt in his mind. He blamed Hamas and waged a campaign of arrests against its members. Hamas, while denying the charges, may have encouraged a recent flurry of rocket shelling of southern Israeli settlements.
Israel, some say, is considering another no-holds-barred war against the Hamas infrastructure in the Gaza and the West Bank. Israeli officials are already on record saying that they will chase down anything that is green a reference to the colour of Hamas flags.more..e-mail

Portugal also warns citizens of business with settlements
European Coordination of Committees and Associations for Palestine (ECCP, Alternative Information Center7/3/2014
On Wednesday, 2 July, Portugal joined the list of European countries warning its citizens against doing business with illegal Israeli settlements. Another 10 European countries are expected to issue similar recommendations by the end of the week.
The warning, which appeared on Portugal s Foreign Ministry website, uses similar language adopted by France, Spain and Italy last week in warnings against doing business with illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and in the Golan Heights.
“Potential buyers and investors should be aware that a future peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians, or between Israel and Syria, could have consequences for property they purchase or economic activities they promote in these settlements. In case of disputes, it could be very difficult for Member States to ensure national protection of their interests.
EU citizens and businesses should also be aware of the potential reputational implications of getting involved in economic and financial activities in settlements.” reads the warning from the Portuguese Foreign Ministry.
Last week France, Spain and Italy issued similar warnings.
In December last year the British government “issued guidance” on business involvement with illegal Israeli settlements, warning citizens against doing business with individuals or entities in Israeli settlements. Netherlands didn t publish warnings to business on the Foreign Ministry website, but their discouragement policy trough the official statements is publicly known. Germany posted very general information on the website of Federal Foreign Affair office about the illegality of Israeli settlements. — See also:Portugal: Full text of warningandGrowing number of European countries warns their citizens about the risk involved in trading with illegal Israeli settlementsmore..e-mail

UK Methodists still half-hearted about BDS
Stuart Littlewood, Redress7/3/2014
“We ll continue dialogue and engage prayerfully
The UK Methodist conference has ducked the opportunity to e
xtend BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) to the whole of Israel. They are content to limit it to firms that operate in the illegally-occupied Palestinian territories for the time being.
They sidestepped a proposal to strengthen the church s commitment to Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) as a peaceful and effective method to persuade the state of Israel to end its military occupation of the Palestinian territories& by applying BDS to Israel in addition to the illegal settlements . And they did so on a day when Israelis were ramping up their wildly disproportionate murder spree and collective punishment against Palestinians in response to the alleged kidnapping and killing of three Israeli teenagers.
All talk, no action
A spokesperson for the church said: A Notice of Motion calling for Conference to look at adopting BDS at next year s conference was not passed and the original resolutions in the report were voted on.
What were those original resolutions?
The conference, mindful of the demands made by this work upon the Connexional Team and the resources of the whole Church, encourages the Methodist people to observe a period of two years (conferences of 2015 and 2016) before submitting memorials or notices of motion to the Conference on this or similar issues relating to Israel/Palestine that require further work or action.more..e-mail

Sacred Treason: Palestinian-Israeli Security Alliance
Palestine Chronicle: 7 Jul 2014 – By Vacy Vlazna A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague. Cicero On May…more

Israel and the Palestinians
Dissident Voice: 7 Jul 2014 – Ever since the three Israeli teenagers went missing, police and army units have besieged Palestinian towns and villages in the area; their houses and shops have been ransacked and atrocities have been committed; Gaza has been bombed, and the death toll is still rising, yet international leaders have remained largely silent, when they all know that such reprisals amount to collective-punishment which is a War Crime. A young Palestinian boy, 16-year-old Mohamed Abu Khdeir, was abducted and killed in a suspected revenge attack by Israelis on July 2. See how Britain s prime minister reacted to his death.more
