Dispatch from Gaza: You can never be emotionally ready
Abeer Ayoub, +972 Magazine 7/8/2014
I have witnessed two wars and even more escalations, and yet I have never been ready for the trauma.
GAZA – It’s 2 a.m. and the electricity is off for the night. I can’t sleep because of the extremely hot weather and my two sisters are lying next to me checking the news on their cellphones. My sisters and I were discussing whether there will be another Israeli offensive again after the recent attacks between the two sides. We tried to dismiss the idea but everything taking place around us indicates it’s possible. We decided to sleep for an hour until the Sohoor meal (the meal Muslims have before dawn during Ramadan to prepare for a long day of fasting). We didn’t even make it through the hour; the many explosions were enough to wake us up.
“Switch on the radio,” I yelled at my sister as she tuned it to a local station.
It’s official now. Israel has launched a new military operation against Gaza called “Protective Edge.”
The atmosphere of these nights is not new to me. I have witnessed two wars and even more escalations, and yet I have never been ready for the trauma. That this escalation coincides with the holy month of Ramadan and a very complicated electricity crisis is very bad. Fasting for more than 14 hours a day, hearing bombings every single hour is the last thing the 1.8 million Palestinians in Gaza want.
I woke up and began the regular routine for every escalation: set the radio to channels that report on every single bombing, then go on Twitter and Facebook to see what your friends are up to and call them when you know there was a bombardment close to their house. That was when I was supposed to have my Sohoor meal. I missed it this time. more..e-mail

Why Netanyahu will lose this Gaza war, too
Samer Badawi, +972 Magazine 7/8/2014
Israel’s military assaults consistently fail to shift the balance of moral power in its war on the Palestinians.
On the heels of a military campaign that failed at its only stated objective — to rescue three kidnapped Jewish teens — and instead yielded near-unanimous international condemnation and government-fueled racial attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has gone all-in on a bet that more violence will somehow reclaim his losses. As others have pointed out, Netanyahu’s gamble has come at the expense of the truth, but it is also costing the lives of more innocents, all of them so far Palestinian.
Let’s set aside for a moment how we got here and instead consider the effectiveness of Israel’s tactics to date. In Gaza, last night’s bombing began just after 1 a.m local time, and by daybreak, Israel had “targeted” 50 sites in 65 airstrikes. By 11 a.m., with rockets still flying defiantly from the coastal strip, the Israeli prime minister had instructed his air force to “take the gloves off,” and within three hours, the number of airstrikes had reportedly risen to 90 — or nearly one every five minutes.
Unlike the “homemade or smuggled rockets” at Palestinian fighters’ disposal, Israel’s payload includes GPS-guided weaponry designed to single out “pixel-sized targets.” Among these, for example, was the 67-year-old founder of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, who was assassinated by air (in his wheelchair) on March 22, 2004. But if the latest Israeli campaign was aimed at Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza, you wouldn’t know it from eyewitness accounts on the ground there.
As with the Israeli military’s rampage throughout the West Bank these past weeks, which Human Rights Watch and others have labeled collective punishment, the attacks on Gaza have not focused on “military targets.” As of this writing, Gaza’s Tweeps have reported repeated airstrikes against mosques, homes, and refugee camps…. more.. e-mail

Proposed legislation and the repercussions of PA security coordination
Ramona Wadi, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 7/8/2014
The deaths of three teenage settlers provided Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a scenario through which the continuous escalation of violence against Palestinians can be manipulated as a necessary tactic. Last month, an unnamed senior IDF official quoted on Israel National News affirmed that Operation Brother’s Keeper, the codename for the search operation when the boys went missing, would not be characterised by a definite timescale. “Part of our strength is our ability to hold this campaign for a prolonged time period,” the official claimed
Such prolongation has been essential to the consolidation of settler-colonialism in Palestine. Overnight as I write, Israel’s bombardment of Gaza has resulted in another nine victims. According to ALRAY, the Palestine Media Agency, seven of those killed were members of the Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing. Settlers are also escalating their routine violence against Palestinian civilians and children; the brutal torture and murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir, for example, has elicited widespread horror. On Facebook, Team Palestina compiled a list of atrocities committed by settlers in the past few days, including the attempted kidnappings of Palestinian children, an attempt in Nablus to amputate a man’s leg using an axe and the killing of two Palestinians in Tulkarem, run over by a settler in a car.
However, the combination of state and settler violence is predictably removed from the wider framework in order to provide space for the dynamics of prolongation and complicity. Following discussions in which the IDF stated that it was seeking the means to re-incarcerate formerly released Palestinian political prisoners, Israel National News reported yesterday that Likud MK Ze’ev Elkin has contributed towards this reality. Yesterday, the Ministerial Committee for Legislation approved a bill drafted by Elkin which, if implemented, will legalise the re-arrest and imprisonment of former Palestinian political prisoners.
According to reports, Elkin voiced his approval of the committee’s endorsement: “This law allows returning released terrorists to prison as soon as they go back to their corrupt ways or try to kidnap Israelis….” more.. e-mail

On journalistic responsibility: Media and
Palestine

Marwan Bishara, Al Jazeera 7/8/2014
Tensions between Western liberalism and imperialism have deformed mainstream journalism’s outlook.
Palestinians can be a drag sometimes – even paranoid. They reckon all Westerners are out to get them. And judging from their reaction in recent days, it’s clear they never met a media channel they liked. Their criticism of CNN, BBC and Al Jazeera America is a testimony of their paranoia.
It’s not like all their homeland is occupied! Or most of their people dispossessed!
Oops. Okay, actually, it is. Yes, they are.
Indeed, Palestine is under siege, and Palestinians are revolting once again.
But so what? Should being victims of five decades of military occupation and seven decades of dispossession put them above questioning or criticism?
It’s not like Western media is out to get them.
Or is it? At least those Palestinians in the West seem to think so.
Complaints, complaints
The unabashed bias has led some, including Jerusalem Fund Director Yousef Munayyer, to question if “CNN has officially become Israeli state TV”. Munayyer cites CNN’s June 30 coverage of the death of three Israeli settlers, featuring three outspoken Israeli guests: Israel’s former US ambassador (who became a CNN analyst); the present Israel ambassador to the US, and Mark Regev, official spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. more.. e-mail

Liberated Homs Residents Challenge Notion of “Revolution”
In Gaza: 8 Jul 2014 – Volunteers have planted a garden in the courtyard of the burned St. Mary’s Church in Homs. Credit: Eva Bartlett/IPS Jul 8, First Published at Inter Press Services **blog version longer by Eva Bartlett Al-Waer, Homs’s most populated area and the city’s last insurgent holdout, might soon achieve the truce that Hom’s Old City saw in May this year when, in an exchange deal, the insurgents left their strongholds. Today, Al-Waer’s population stands at more than 200,000, many of them internally displaced persons (IDPs) who fled their homes in other parts of Syria, only to find themselves caught in the middle of the efforts of the Syrian army to eradicate the armed militants. Homs, Syria’s third largest city and dubbed in the media as the “capital of the revolution”, suffered nearly three years of the insurgents’ presence and the Syrian army’s fight to oust them and restore calm. By May…more

Ziofascism, Lynching and the Prospects of a Third Intifada
Palestine Chronicle: 8 Jul 2014 – By Jamil Khader The savage and irrational lynching of Mohammad Abu Khdeir marks a new troubling trend in the radicalization of Israeli Jewish society. The seventeen year old Palestinian teenager was abducted on his way to the dawn prayers, brutally beaten up, forced to drink gasoline, and was incinerated alive by members of La Familia , a terrorist Jewish mafia affiliated with the racist and extremist Jewish soccer club, Bietar Jerusalem. As the cracks in the edifice of the apartheid Israeli state become more visible under the pressure of international condemnation, state power seems to be shifting into the hands of Jewish terrorist groups, vigilantes, and mobs. Up till now, the apartheid Israeli state repressive apparatus has provided the security and protection these Ziofascist terrorists needed to continue their campaign of terror against the Palestinians. For these Ziofascist terrorist groups, the hegemonic structures of apartheid control, occupation, colonization, and warehousing that have…more

‘Prince of Darkness’ Disowns Iraq’s Tragedy
Palestine Chronicle: 8 Jul 2014 – By Ramzy Broud As Iraq stands on the verge of a complete breakdown into mini sectarian states, former leading neoconservative and Iraq war advocate Richard Perle has chimed in on the situation on Newsmax TV. His statements in an interview given on Saturday were yet another testimony to the intellectual degeneration of a group that had once promised a ‘new Middle East’, only to destabilize the region with violent consequences that continue to reverberate until this day. The Islamic State (IS), which didn’t exist at the time of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, has seized large swathes of Syria and, along helped by a brewing Sunni rebellion, stands in control of large chunks of western, northern and central Iraq. At the time of the 2003 invasion, Perle was one of the leading so-called intellectuals who was known for his strong support of right-wing Israeli parties, and for his particular closeness…more
