Prince Bandar back in the Driver’s Seat in Riyadh

12.07.2014 | 00:00 | Wayne MADSEN

Prince Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdulazia bin Saud is the godfather behind the creation of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), now called the «Islamic State» or «Islamic Caliphate»… Bandar has returned to an influential position advising King Abdullah after being sacked as Saudi intelligence chief last April. Bandar’s new title is «adviser to the King and his special envoy»… CIA director John O. Brennan, a Saudophile and former CIA station chief in Riyadh, reportedly played a hand in the restoration of Bandar to a key position in the Saudi government… Bandar’s goal is to eliminate the current governments of Syria and Iraq, thus depriving Iran of its only two allies in the region…

Europe Has No Substitute for Russian Energy Resources

12.07.2014 | 00:00 | Pyotr ISKENDEROV

In many ways, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksander Vucic’s two-day visit to Moscow this week was a breakthrough. To begin with, both sides finally managed to come to an agreement on all issues concerning Serbia’s involvement in the South Stream pipeline project. Serbia’s Prime Minister also emphasised an interest in developing a partnership with Russia, which he sees as a priority of his country’s foreign policy…

Freedom of Speech – Ukrainian Style: Persecution of Journalists and Total Censorship

11.07.2014 | 00:00 | Alexander DONETSKY

…Many of those who read Ukrainian media note that the events appear to be highlighted in the very same way, almost in unison. It’s easy to explain. In March the new rulers introduced a moratorium on criticism of the new government. In other words they established severe censorship excluding any dissent. They send instructions to media outlets telling the outlets’ editors how and what to write… The people in the United States and Europe are gullible enough to believe the beautifully sounded pledges of Kiev rulers about their allegiance to democracy. At the same time the freedom of speech in Ukraine has since long become an element of Neo-Nazi dictatorship resembling the George Orwell’s «Ministry of Truth».

Old Europe Going Decay

11.07.2014 | 00:00 | Vladimir SEDOV

…The Ukrainian market got narrowed down for Europeans. The trend is to continue. Now what does the European Union get having signed the association agreement? The answer is hanging in the air.  This is kind of corrosion of European mentality. What’s good for the United States and Great Britain does not necessarily meet the interests of other EU members. Can they not understand it? Is it senility? I have pity for the old Granma Europe. Whatever it is, there is still a chance.  The undermining by Washington of peaceful efforts exerted by France and Germany in Ukraine, the spying rows when the US special services tapped the phones and e-mails of top European Union officials and leaders of European states, the recent revelation of US spying activities in Germany – all told, these factors raise great doubts the about the faithfulness of Anglo-Saxons to the idea of «Atlantic partnership»…

Visegrad group to Become a Permanently Deployed EU-NATO Rapid Response Force Reinforced by Ukraine

10.07.2014 | 00:00 | Andrei AKULOV

…On 21 March 2014, European Union Heads of State and Government and Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk signed the political provisions of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement. The agreement commits both parties to promote a gradual convergence toward the EU’s Common Security and Defense Policy and European Defence Agency policies. The V4 is an important step linking Ukraine – EU military structure, which depends on and closely aligns its activities with NATO. The first step on the way is joining the Visegrad Battle group military unit. Visegrad Group defence ministers made the decision at a meeting on June 1 before the formal meeting of NATO defence ministers in Brussels… Slovakia, as the V4 President, will promote close cooperation of military intelligence services and that cooperation will be extended by Romania and the Baltic countries (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia)…

Washington’s Arrogance Will Destroy Its Empire

09.07.2014 | 09:52 | Paul Craig ROBERTS

Alone among the governments in the world, Washington requires sovereign governments to follow Washington’s laws even when Washington’s laws contradict the laws of sovereign countries… Washington issues ultimatums to sovereign nations to do as they are told or «be bombed into the stone age». Washington violates diplomatic immunity and forces down the planes of presidents of sovereign countries to be illegally searched. Washington ordered Russia to violate its laws and to hand over Edward Snowden. Russia is strong enough to refuse to comply with Washington’s orders. So what did Washington do? The city upon the hill, the light unto the world, the «indispensable, exceptional government,» kidnapped Roman Seleznyov, the son of a Russian MP, in a foreign country, the Republic of the Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean…

US – Afghan Pact Remains Elusive

09.07.2014 | 00:00 | Melkulangara BHADRAKUMAR

The sudden appearance of the US Senator John McCain in the Hindu Kush Mountains last weekend reminds the regional powers that there is more to Afghanistan’s presidential election than meets the eye… McCain himself is not new to the frontline. He is a frequent visitor to Syria’s neighboring countries to shore up the sagging regime change agenda against President Bashar Al-Assad. His missions to Ukraine aimed to ensure that the gains of the regime change in February did not get dissipated. His Afghan mission may seem on surface to be somewhat atypical… But in reality he was undertaking a typical McCain mission in Afghanistan – namely, to remove the road block that delays the signing of the US-Afghan security pact leading to the establishment of US military bases and advancing the ‘pivot’ to Asia…

A Crisis of Faith within the European Union

09.07.2014 | 00:00 | Pyotr ISKENDEROV

The two-day EU summit in late June was marked by growing disagreements among members of that organization. Even the signing of the economic sections of EU association agreements with Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova could not conceal this fact. It is entirely possible that by the time these documents take effect, the EU itself will have changed enormously, prompting a radically different approach toward, for example, the admission of many Balkan states…

Latin America Refuses to Live in US «Global Barracks»

08.07.2014 | 00:40 | Nil NIKANDROV

Latin America paid great interest to the President Putin’s speech at the conference of Russian Federation ambassadors and permanent representatives on July 1.The interest grew even more as it was reported on June 4 Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to visit Cuba, Argentina and Brazil later this month. The President is to visit Latin America and attend a summit of the BRICS group of five major emerging economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) on July 11-16…

Europe Cheated to be Used by War Mongers

08.07.2014 | 00:00 | Olga SHEDROVA

All the attempts at peace settlement in Ukraine have a common feature. The ink does not even get dry as the Kiev regime rushes to escalate the conflict. That’s how it was on February 21. As soon as the document on conflict management was signed added by the guarantees of European diplomats, the Neo-Nazi militants staged a coup. The scenario was repeated on April 17 when the Ukrainian government said freeing buildings and disarmament of militants had no relation to the provisions of the agreement. It also abruptly intensified the combat actions in Donbass. The same fate was in store for the Vladimir Putin – Didier Burkhalter plan as well as other peaceful initiatives…

Iraqi Kurds Get Serious about Independence in a Region Committed to status quo

07.07.2014 | 00:00 | Wayne MADSEN

The leadership of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) of Iraq, which has all the trappings of an independent state even though a leader of one of its two major clans is nominally president of the Republic of Iraq, has set out on the risky road to full independence… KRG President Massoud Barzani recently asked the Kurdish parliament in Erbil to set a date for an independence referendum. The Iraqi government rejected Barzani’s proposal… The only country that has outwardly championed Kurdistan’s independence is Israel. The Israeli Mossad has long-standing ties with Kurdistan, having trained many of its Peshmerga forces… But Israel has one major problem in exercising domination over an independent or semi-independent Kurdistan. Iran, which Israelis officials theatrically re-state is an «existential» threat to the Jewish state, continues to have greater influence in Kurdistan than do any other regional player…

Bumps and Ruts on Ukraine’s «Polish Road» to Europe

07.07.2014 | 00:00 | Dmitry MININ

…Warsaw’s main motives for supporting Kiev are of a geopolitical nature rather than an economic one, and they have nothing to do with charity. The idea that a significant part of modern Ukraine was once part of Poland and that in the next round of history it could still be «reunited with the motherland» lives on in the Polish consciousness. Comments to the effect that «after waiting for a suitable period, the Poles could create a federation with Ukraine» are frequently encountered in the Polish media. Publicly expressing such ideas on the official level is not considered proper, but the entire educational system and state and religious ideology of Poland is based on the view that the «Kresy Wschodnie» were Polish and were taken away from the Poles unfairly. All Polish politicians are raised on this ideology…

Donbass: Russians Subject to Unparalleled Ethnic Cleansing

06.07.2014 | 00:00 | Olga CHETVERIKOVA

The Ukrainian army continues a large-scale offensive against the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. Indiscriminate shelling results in more civilian deaths… The details of the bloodshed are to be studied before they become known to public. In late January 2013 when former President Yanukovych still was in power, the Ukrainian government and Royal Dutch Shell inked the country’s first major shale gas 50 year profit sharing agreement. Shell plans to develop the Yuzov field in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions… The territory to be explored is 7886 square kilometers, including Slavyansk (situated right in the heart of deposit), Izium, a major part of Kramatorsk and a large number of smaller populated areas like, for instance, Krasny Liman, Seversk, Yasnogorsk, Kamyshevka etc.
