Ravaging Gaza: The war Netanyahu cannot possibly win
Ramzy Baroud, Ma’an News Agency 7/17/2014
When the bodies of three Israeli settlers — Naftali Frenkel and Gilad Shaar, both 16, and Eyal Yifrach, 19 — were found on June 30 near Hebron in the southern West Bank, Israel went into a state of mourning and a wave of sympathy flowed in from around the world. The three had disappeared 18 days earlier in circumstances that remain unclear.
The entire episode, particularly after its grim ending, seemed to traumatize Israelis into ignoring harsh truths about the settlers and the militarization of their society. Amid a portrayal of the three as hapless youths, although one was a 19-year-old soldier, commentators have failed to provide badly needed context to the events. Few, if any, assigned the blame where it was most deserved — on expansionist policies which have sown hatred and bloodshed.
Before the discovery of the bodies, the real face of Netanyahu’s notoriously right-wing government was well-known. Few held Illusions about how “peaceful” an occupation could be if run by figures such as Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Economy Minister Naftali Bennett, and Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon. But because “children” — the term used by Netanyahu himself — were involved, even critics didn’t expect an exercise in political point-scoring.
There was sympathy elicited for the case of the missing settlers, but it quickly vanished in the face of an Israeli response (in the West Bank, Jerusalem and later in a full-scale war on Gaza) largely seen in the crucible of world opinion as disproportionate and cruel. Rather than being related to the tragic death of three youths, this response obviously reflected Netanyahu’s grand political calculations.
As mobs of Israeli Jews went out on an ethnic lynching spree in Israel, Jerusalem and the West Bank that some likened to a “pogrom,” occupation soldiers conducted a massive arrest campaign of hundreds of Palestinians, mostly Hamas members and supporters. more.. e-mail

What next for Gaza?
Robert Turner, Ma’an News Agency 7/16/2014
Robert Turner is Gaza Director of Operations for UNRWA.
As I sit here in my office cum bedroom in Gaza City, listening to the airstrikes and rocket fire, there is talk of how to bring the violence to an end. This is to be eminently desired, particularly for the civilian population in Gaza who have suffered the brunt of this escalation.
But when I think of the 17,000 displaced people sheltered in our schools, some of whom I spoke with yesterday, I wonder what they would think of this. Because they have seen it all before, for most this was their third displacement since 2009; many having returned to the exact same classroom.
If this prospective cease-fire ends the same way as those before it, would they think this is anything other than a brief respite from violence?
For Gaza, a return to ‘calm’ is a return to the eighth year of blockade. It is a return to over 50 percent of the population either unemployed or unpaid. It is a return to confinement to Gaza and no external access to markets, employment, or education — in short, no access to the outside world.
For example, if one of the grandmothers I spoke to yesterday should wish to go to Birzeit University in the West Bank to study, she cannot.
The Israeli government need not demonstrate this grandmother poses any specific threat to security as they have approved a blanket ban on Gazans studying in the West Bank based on an undefined security threat…. more.. e-mail

Dispatch from Gaza: Why Palestinians should speak to Israeli media
Abeer Ayyoub, +972 Magazine 7/14/2014
When Hamas banned Palestinians in Gaza from working with Israeli media, I understood why, but could not stay silent. If we Gazans stay silent, a large part of the truth will be lost, and I don’t want the truth to be lost.
Since Operation Protective Edge started earlier last week, I haven’t stopped receiving calls from Israeli television and radios channels asking me to go on air to talk about the current situation in Gaza. I never thought twice about accepting all of these offers because I believe it’s my responsibility to speak up and reach the Israeli audience’s ears.
Yet in each of the interviews, the first question was : isn’t it dangerous for you to be speaking to Israeli media using your real name? Well, no one said it’s not. Contacting Israelis is always sensitive and even unacceptable in Gaza, even when it comes to the governmental side. Hamas has banned local journalists in Gaza from dealing with Israeli media for reasons that have to do with security, along with some other reasons.
I always understood this point of view, yet never adopted it. Why should I fear talking to the second side of the conflict about the first side of the conflict to which I belong ? Why would I be anonymous while I’m spreading word of the suffering 1.8 million Palestinians in Gaza are facing? How can being silent and just boycotting the Israeli media be good for Palestinians anyway?
I understand it’s a bit risky, and very challenging. People in Gaza take issue with dealing with anyone who lives behind the Erez border terminal. Maybe before 2000, when the Second Intifada erupted and the two territories became totally isolated, were people able to understand the second part a bit more. But ever since, the two people in the two territories began thinking of each other as aliens.
I always take issue when people pointing fingers at me for engaging with the Israeli media, yet I never tire of defending what I believe in…. more.. e-mail

Gaza is burning and the Arabs sit and watch
Dr Mohammed Al-Misfer, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 7/14/2014
There have been many times when oppressed people resisting their oppressors gain international solidarity for their cause as public opinion sways in their favour. They embody bravery as they continue to resist against their enemies. We saw this pattern manifest itself in Vietnam when the people struggled against the biggest superpower in the world. The Vietnamese demonstrated how they turned to each other for support when the northern city of Hanoi stood as a beacon of light for its counterpart Saigon in the south. Soon after, the southern Vietnamese people embodied the spirit of resistance and achieved all of their goals.
When it comes to the Palestinian case, the situation is entirely different, for in the Gaza Strip (Southern Palestine) we see true armed resistance being engaged in the b
attle against the Zionist enemy, which is armed with the most sophisticated weapons and is using all of its power and influence throughout the world to frame this conflict as it sees fit; it is from this that the Palestinian people in Gaza can find no escape. Gaza is burning and its natural supporters, the Arabs of the region, sit and watch. The Palestinian Authority under the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas, based in the West Bank city of Ramallah (which we can consider here to be the northern region of Palestine), should be the biggest advocate for its people in Gaza. And yet, all we here are murmurs and useless statements being made here and there.
On the first day of Israeli aggression against Gaza last Tuesday, President Abbas was speaking at a peace conference in Tel Aviv. He failed to say a single word about what was happening in Gaza. We were very optimistic when we heard that a unity government had been formed between the West Bank and Gaza and we believed that national division had ended once and for all. We believed that this new government would work to prevent Israeli aggression from affecting both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and we said that, soon, this government would work to lift the Egyptian side of the siege on Gaza. Unfortunately, all we have seen is a deafening silence from the current “national unity government” in Ramallah.more.. e-mail

Now Is The Summer of Our Discontent
Palestine Chronicle: 17 Jul 2014 – By Rafiq Kathwari My sister-in-law and I sat in the back seat of the Volkswagen as my older brother drove in soft rain through red lights to Maimonides. “Kicking,” she said, putting my hand over her round belly. Shy, I gazed at her flip-flops. A stork delivered a boy in Brooklyn eight years to the day JFK was shot in Dallas. A new alien in New York, I babysat my cute nephew in a stark rental on Park Avenue. His dad rode the IRT to Pine Street; his mom was a cashier at Korvettes. The boy & I together discovered Big Bird on a Zenith console, my first TV exposure at age 22. Israeli MP: Mothers of All Palestinians Must Be Killed
Dissident Voice: 17 Jul 2014 – A well-known Israeli politician and parliament member has branded Palestinians as terrorists, saying mothers of all Palestinians should also be killed during the ongoing Israeli assault on the besieged Gaza Strip. Ayelet Shaked of the ultra-nationalist Jewish Home party called for the slaughter of Palestinian mothers who give birth to “little snakes.” They have to die and their houses should be demolished so that they cannot bear any more terrorists,” Shaked said. She added, “They are all our enemies and their blood should be on our hands. This also applies to the mothers of the dead terrorists.” The remarks are considered as a call for genocide as she declared that all Palestinians are Israel’s enemies and must be killed. On Monday Shaked quoted this on her Facebook page: Behind every terrorist stand dozens of men and women, without whom he could not engage in terrorism. They are all enemy combatants,…more
