On ’human shielding’ in Gaza
Nicola Perugini and Neve Gordon, Al Jazeera 7/19/2014
The Israeli army has tried to justify striking civilian areas.
All fighting within cities and all bombardments of urban spaces, even the most “precise and surgical”, is a potential death trap for civilians. Consequently, the permeation of war into cities inevitably transforms their inhabitants into potential human shields.
For Palestinians living in Gaza today, simply spending time in their own homes, frequenting a mosque, going to a hospital or to school has become a dangerous enterprise since any one of these architectural edifices can become at any moment a target. One can no longer safely assume that the existence of masses of human bodies – even the bodies of children – in civilian spaces can serve as defence of the weak against the lethal capacity of the hi-tech states. But since hi-tech states can and do kill hundreds or thousands of civilians, they have to provide moral justification for their action in order to preserve their standing in the international arena; they have to demonstrate that they are protecting the principles of liberal democracy. It is precisely within this context that we should understand the series of posters recently disseminated by the Israeli military through its Twitter account, Facebook and blogs.
The poster “Where do Gaza Terrorists Hide Their Weapons” is a paradigmatic example, where the subtext does the speaking: Houses, mosques, schools, and hospitals are legitimate targets because they are presumed to be weapon depositories.
This is also the message in “When Is A House a Home?” which simply zooms in on one of the images in the previous poster, showing how Palestinians presumably hide rockets in civilian homes. more.. e-mail

Can Israel be stopped?
Larbi Sadiki, Al Jazeera 7/19/2014
New geopolitical realities have cleared the way for the ongoing Israeli offensive against Gaza.
It is a myth that the war between Hamas and Israel was triggered by the murder of several children, Israeli and Palestinian, in recent weeks. It is also a myth that Palestinian fighters alone are to blame for the ongoing military offensive in Gaza.
The current war is a logical consequence of the frustration over failed negotiations and anger over the crippling siege of the overcrowded Gaza strip, the continuous building of settlements, the uprooting of Palestinian trees, and confiscation of land and houses.
Israel fights simply because it can. As it steps up its war against Hamas with a ground invasion, it looks unstoppable. What happens next will depend on the readiness of Hamas, which has declined an Egypt-mediated truce that would have neither lifted the siege on Gaza nor given it political manoeuvrability to negotiate all Palestinian matters with the international community as an equal to Fatah.
Israel’s offensive on Gaza happens at a time when international diplomacy is distracted by the escalation of conflicts in other areas (e.g. Ukraine and Iraq). Besides, a great deal has changed since the last war in 2012 when Cairo had a government sympathetic to the Palestinian cause. Hamas has since lost that support and, like the Muslim Brotherhood, counts among Arab states more foes than friends.
Indeed, Israel knew it was an opportune time to strike…. more.. e-mail

Israel ought to wake up to reality
George S. Hishmeh, Arabic Media Internet Network (AMIN) 7/18/2014
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had believed that his bloody bombardment for more than two weeks of the besieged Gaza Strip would finally diminish the status of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group in control of the region on the Israeli-Egyptian border. Rather, his attempt has backfired despite the fact that more than 190 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,400 others have been wounded.
Hamas, facing serious economic, social and security problems in the Gaza Strip, was apparently compelled to seek assistance from the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) led by Mahmoud Abbas — a step that ended in a reconciliation agreement that installed a new government of technocrats for the two Palestinian regions. Hamas officials would not be holding any position in the new Palestinian regime, but the subsequent merciless onslaught by Israel and Hamas’s tough stance in landing more than 1,000 rockets on Israel has raised its stature among Palestinians and other fellow Arabs in the region to a very high level. How all this will affect the chances of a Palestinian-Israeli settlement remains to be seen, but certainly, the prospects are not very encouraging. For one, Netanyahu in the opinion of many, including Israelis and American Jews, has blundered.
To start with, the manipulations of Netanyahu, his right-wing cabinet members and the actions of senior military officials detailed in the Israeli media were aimed at whipping the Israeli public to support the unjustified arrest of several hundreds of Palestinians, some of whom were released from jail recently. The recent abduction of three Israeli colonists, all teenagers, was attributed to Hamas, although the latter denied any connection and Israel has never provided any evidence to support the charges.
What has been more alarming is the report published in the Times of Israel on July 13, titled ‘Netanyahu finally speaks his mind’…. more.. e-mail

Basic conditions for any ceasefire require a political element
Daoud Kuttab, Arabic Media Internet Network (AMIN) 7/17/2014
In violent conflicts, parties to the conflict are always under pressure to cease fire. Ceasefire agreements tend to have different formats but there are two basic requirements that successful long-term ceasefires require.
The first is clear: a total cessation of all attacks using all forms of weapons and from and to all relative locations. But most people don’t realise that the most important part of an effective ceasefire agreement is usually the second part. Namely, the political conditions that are being offered to buttress and cement the cessation of hostilities.
The idea of both parties stopping attacks usually doesn’t hold for very long. There is always an element, usually political or logistic, that was the cause of hostilities and which the parties are adamant to try and address in order to justify to their own people why they participated in the violence in the first place.
Applying this theory to the current Israeli war on Gaza it is clear that the Israeli idea of mutual tahdiya (calm) is not a formula that will last very long.
The Palestinian side feels that they were wrongly accused of being behind the kidnapping of three Israelis in areas under Israel’s control in the West Bank. They, along with the entire population of Gaza and the rest of the world, also feel that the seven-year illegal and unauthorised land and sea siege of Gaza must come to an end.
One possible way out of the current situation is to involve the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority, which has, at least on the civilian side, a legal and authoritative role as to the lives of Palestinians in Gaza. The unity government has ended the period of two governing bodies in the West Bank and Gaza. All Palestinians in the occupied territories today have a single civilian governing leadership, namely the government headed by Rami Hamdallah. more.. e-mail

May Palestine Become Free Soon
Dissident Voice: 19 Jul 2014 – During the 1967 Six Day War, my youthful ignorance and gullibility made me completely swallow pro-Israeli propaganda regarding that conflict, plus the overall glorification of Tel Aviv’s purpose relating to Palestinians. I remember a paperback book, Strike Zion , which prominently appeared on newsstands, extolling especially the Israeli military, while thoroughly demonizing Arabs. I’ve since become a passionate supporter of Palestinian independence, based on irrefutable evidence that Israel, for many cruel decades, has built its own state via an ongoing genocidal effort to extirpate Palestinian rights and sovereignty by means not unlike how European colonists took America from its indigenous people. In Gaza today, Jews having historical ties to the horrific Holocaust, are ultra-hypocritically delivering sudden mass death, violent injury and harrowing fear to trapped multitudes just as Hitler did with the Warsaw Ghetto. There are sites on the Internet, such as GlobalPost , where one can view grotesque photos of the…more

A Moment to Be Seized?
Dissident Voice: 18 Jul 2014 – There was never a better moment for the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement to mass-mobilise for a mega-campaign to not only impact more heavily on the lawless Israeli state but also unmask those in business and public life who shamelessly support the criminal programme that was embedded in its DNA while on the Zionists’ drawing board. This could include politicians, businesspeople, entertainers, sports stars, churchmen and the many organisations and fan clubs that nourish the thuggish vanity and horrendous cruelty of the Zionist regime. Zero tolerance is needed. Those who fund or support the inhuman behaviour we have witnessed, not just this week but ever since 1947 (and some would say, long before then), are not fit to be admitted into decent society let alone allowed to run our country and major institutions. AIPAC, the Anti Defamation League, the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Holocaust Trust, the…more
