Twitter, Gaza, gender, power: Language and the steel of bulldozers
Heike Schotten, Ma an News Agency7/25/2014
Perhaps the most rudimentary measure of the destruction of any war is casualty numbers — answering the question, how many dead?
The answer to that question, in relation to the ongoing Israeli slaughter in the Gaza Strip, continues to horrify. As of this writing, it is more than 800.
Children, most spectacularly, are the victims of this war. Entire families have been killed in their own homes. The injured, infirm, disabled, and elderly have been targeted. Almost all the dead are civilians.
And every day, the number only gets bigger, sometimes in staggering increments.
Every hour, photos and video emerge documenting the carnage in Gaza, too gruesome to be imagined.
Every minute, another person in Gaza tweets an expression of sheer terror, keeping followers like myself, half a world away, sleepless, panicked, and heartsick.
There are not words capable of characterizing the outrageousness of this latest Israeli assault. There is no language equal to the suffering and devastation being wrought upon the people of Gaza.
In describing the victims — as children, women, families, the elderly — we attempt to return some humanity to those whose systematic dehumanization is part and parcel of Israel s regime of crime and impunity against the Palestinian people.more..e-mail

Israel Losing Support from Its Biggest Ally: American Evangelical Christians
WashingtonsBlog7/25/2014
A Shift Among Evangelicals & Especially Among the Young
We documented yesterday that the biggest supporters of Israel are American evangelical Christians & Protestants or to a lesser extent Catholics.
But that support base is slipping &
Buzzfeed reported in January:
“Figures with deep roots in America s religious right have launched a quiet effort aimed at pushing evangelical Christians away from decades of growing loyalty to Israel and toward increased solidarity with the Palestinians….
“The campaign by a coalition of religious leaders, international nonprofits, and activists has taken place in recent years largely behind the scenes and away from the prying eyes of the political press and it s being driven by a generation of Evangelicals alienated by the way their faith was yoked to Republican foreign policy during the Bush years. Now, organizations like the Telos Group and the large Christian nonprofit World Vision have joined a small army of ministers and Christian opinion-makers working to reorient Evangelicals stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict producing documentaries about the plight of Palestinian Christians, providing theological rationale for a more balanced view of the issue, and taking Evangelicals on trips to the Middle East….
“The campaign has alarmed America s most committed Christian supporters of Israel, who acknowledge their rivals message is gaining momentum within the church.”
The Forward noted in March (via Haaretz):
“Support for Israel is weakening among evangelical Christians….”more..e-mail

Israeli Crimes and World Hypocrisy
Robert Fantina, CounterPunch7/22/2014
Suffer the Palestinians
With Israeli terror continuing to be unleashed on the Gaza Strip, it might be interesting to look at the world s reaction, or lack thereof.
First, let s establish context. Israel was formed by the ethnic cleansing of over 750,000 Palestinians, driven from their homes with no recompenses, to refugee camps. Israel took far more than 50% of their land at that time. Since then, through illegal settlement building, Palestinians are squeezed into less than 20% of their own land, and that amount is constantly shrinking.
The U.S., Israel s favorite puppet in all the world, is always stepping forward to nobly offer its services to resolve this issue. However, when the United Nations Security Council criticizes Israel for some aspect of its numerous violations of international law, the U.S. vetoes the resolution.
While the U.S. disingenuously offers to broker a deal between Israel and Palestine, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu states categorically that Israel will never give up the West Bank. This is an integral part of Palestine, and a future, free Palestinian state.
The U.S. wishes to broker negotiations between two entities for which there can be no negotiation. That can only occur when each party has something the other wants, which can only be obtained by surrendering something it has. Palestine has much that Israel wants, but Israel can simply take it, without giving anything in return. It has done so for generations, and the U.S. has always condoned it.
Israel claims, incredibly, that it is only doing what it needs to do to ensure its national security….more..e-mail

A Plague on One House
Greg Shupak, Jacobin7/17/2014
Both sides aren t to blame in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel is.
On July 15, Western media demanded that Hamas and other resistance groups operating in the Gaza Strip accept what they labeled an Israeli-Egyptian ceasefire proposal. On the surface, the call sounds reasonable, which is exactly what allows it to disorient audiences largely unfamiliar with the details of the ongoing conflict.
The first objection is the obvious one: How can Hamas agree to a deal that it played no part in negotiating and that was crafted by two of its enemies? The mainstream media would be unlikely to demand that Israel agree to an arrangement jointly put forth by, say, Hamas and Iran an imperfect analogy, since Hamas and Iran do not colonize and besiege Israelis. But the point stands.
Second, implicit in this criticism of Hamas is the idea that Palestinians are obliged to accept any offer, no matter its terms. Consider, for instance, Mouin Rabbani s point that what the Gaza Strip s militant groups and a huge number of Palestinians object to in the proposal is that it just puts back in place the same 2012 ceasefire agreement which Israel has violated freely, and does not ensure that such violations would stop.
What s more, Rabbani suggests, Hamas and other Palestinian organizations are averse to returning to an untenable status quo, which lasts only until Israel once again decides to launch a major assault on the Gaza Strip, and which does not point to concrete steps towards lifting the ongoing and prolonged blockade of the Gaza St
rip.
The Israeli violations of the 2012 agreement that Rabbani mentions are a long-term habit of the country. Hamas has good reason to distrust Israel s commitment to a ceasefire, but Western media has tended to ignore this point when it discusses the failure of the proposed truce.more..e-mail

Britain s Shame
Dissident Voice: 26 Jul 2014 – Today in London crowds are gathering to vent their anger in a mass demonstration and march to Parliament to stop the massacre in Gaza and call for an arms embargo against Israel. This follows last weekend s huge protest outside the Israeli embassy and campaigns against the BBC s pro-Israel bias in reporting the assault on Gaza. There is growing resentment among British people at being endlessly shamed by their government s complicity in the mega-injustices and non-stop crimes inflicted on the native people of the Holy Land, exemplified by Whitehall s attempts to whitewash Israel s latest genocidal offensive. And on this the 19th day of Israel s blitzkrieg comes news of a brief humanitarian pause , after which the killing spree will continue while Israel attempts to eradicate Gaza s tunnels. At this point in the orchestrated tragedy the Palestinian death-toll is approaching 900, three-quarters civilians including around 200 children, and more than 5,000 wounded. These…more

Syllogism of Death
Dissident Voice: 25 Jul 2014 – The media emphasizes the emotional aspect of tragedy, and the public responds with tears and regrets, rarely giving attention to the illogic that caused the tragedy. When illogic is a governing factor in the violence against people, it elevates the calamity to a criminal action. Feeling sorrow for the victim is warranted but insufficient; thought must complement emotion and enforce justice against the perpetrator. In the war on Gaza, commentary has evaded logical analysis and presented causes and actions as gut reactions to unforeseen events. Logic, the opposite of emotion, may seem cold and indifferent, but syllogism, a formal argument in logic that is formed by two statements and a conclusion which must be true if the two statements are true, tells us an inarguable story. Explaining the attack on Gaza by logic, reveals a syllogism of death. The syllogism goes like this: If A yields B and B yields…more
