2. New Housmans Feminist Sci-fi Book Club
Genderless societies, anarchist planets, polyamorous aliens, parthenogenesis, feminist militias, reproductive dystopias, cyborg families, and more at the new Housmans Feminist Sci-Fi Book Club! Join us at the bookshop on the first Thursday of every month, 7pm-9pm, starting Thursday June 1st. All genders welcome. Please bring drinks or snacks to share.
For our first three meetings we’ll be reading:
June 1st: Woman on the Edge of Time, by Marge Piercy
July 6th: Kindred, by Octavia E Butler
August 3rd: The Power, by Naomi Alderman

6. ‘Surviving The Future: culture, carnival, and capital in the aftermath of the market economy’ with Shaun Chamberlin
Wednesday 10th May, 7pm
Shaun Chamberlin introduces the posthumous work of David Fleming, who explored practical ways of repairing and replacing the atrophied social structures on which most human cultures are built, so as to form the basis of a cohesive society that might survive the turbulent times to come.

Saturday 13th May, 6.30pm, £5 suggested entry
France is going through an intense combination of terrorist attacks, police brutality, the rise of fascism, a state of emergency and a general rise and intensification of racism for African, Arab, Asian and migrant communities. This event seeks to explore these issues just after the French national elections.

‘One Year Anniversary of Elephant’ with Siana Bangura and Special Guests
Thursday 18th May, 7pm
Poet in Residence Siana Bangura reads from her award winning debut collection of poetry, Elephant, which tackles issues such as black womanhood, gender and racial politics, as well as family, fatherlessness, identity, Black British girlhood, unemployment, gentrification, disenfranchisement, love and loss. Special guests to be announced.

10. POETRY IN THE VAULTS: ‘From Inside’ with Anthony Howell
Wednesday 31st May, 7pm
Howell taught in prisons until he was taken off the books for helping inmates write material the authorities deemed inappropriate. This experience informs the poems of From Inside. An incarcerated view and a criminal underworld get contrasted with an “overworld” of privilege and conspiracy.

14. London Pacifism and Nonviolence Discussion Group
Housmans has a regular Pacifism and Nonviolence Discussion Group, who meet on the second Tuesday of the month. All are welcome, but please be prepared to join in the discussion. Please try to turn up by 7pm sharp.
