Earlier this year, Netpol and the Article 11 Trust published our State of Protest report, with a stark title: ‘This is Repression’. We are currently collaborating on a new report for 2025 and it is hard to know what to call it this time. Perhaps ‘An End to Our Illusions’?

On 23 September 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a dramatic address, explicitly threatening those allegedly involved in drug trafficking to the United States with being blown “out of existence”. This statement, taken as a blatant disregard for international law and due process, made reference to the latest escalation in the decades-long U.S. War on Drugs, a campaign historically used to justify U.S. foreign intervention in Latin America, and now, prominently aimed at Venezuela.
Larry Ellison founded Oracle decades ago, and through that became a multi-billionaire. The latest estimate puts his net worth at US$344 billion, after he ramped Oracle stock with an utterly unbelievable deal with OpenAI to get Oracle stock that “AI” premium. Like so many of the new oligarchs that are as much stock pumpers and rentier monopolists as providers of any real beneficial products these days. Everything to keep the discourse of endless growth alive; without which their stock prices would be far, far lower.
We were sad to hear of the death, at the age of 91, of the primatologist Dame Jane Goodall. She was a pioneer researcher into animal sentience, especially as it related to her beloved chimpanzees, which she observed in their natural habitat. She outraged the scientific and academic community by giving the chimps names and commenting on their personalities. In 1960 she was the first to document their use of tools – at the time, a skill that was frequently claimed to be unique to humans. Jane was also concerned about the effects of GM foods and pesticides on health and the environment. On pesticides, she said, “Someday we shall look back on this dark era of agriculture and shake our heads. How could we have ever believed that it was a good idea to grow our food with poisons?” GMWatch
Starmer’s desperate rush for ID cards is a recipe for repression. It won’t reduce migration, but it will put our rights at risk. We need to come together and fight back – are you with us?
We’re already seeing a crackdown on our freedoms. With the far right on the rise, a national database like this could be weaponised for authoritarian control.
We can’t allow this half-baked scheme to become law. Our fundamental rights are on the line.
7 October 2025 will mark the second anniversary of Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza. The World Health Organisation’s data page on Palestinian casualties, regularly updated using figures from the Palestinian Health Ministry and UN agencies, shows that around 66,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza over the last two years – 30 out of every 1,000 people who were living in Gaza (these numbers, however may be too low, as the ministry has often admitted that it has no capacity to keep up with the flow of death and does not know how many people are buried beneath the tonnes of rubble).
This Herblock cartoon (Washington Post, 3/29/50) is the first recorded use of the word “McCarthyism.”
The political cartoon is of vast importance to the history of the United States. Benjamin Franklin’s “Join or Die” made the case for unity to colonists wanting independence from Great Britain. Thomas Nast exposed the corruption of Boss Tweed’s Tammany Hall; when Tweed attempted to escape justice, he was identified from a Nast cartoon. It was political cartoonist Herblock who coined the term “McCarthyism” in a 1950 pieceattacking the Republican Party platform.
The United States is escalating its confrontation with China under the guise of “deterring aggression,” while in reality reorienting its global strategy toward maintaining hegemony over Asia through destabilization, political manipulation, and military buildup.
On September 19th, the UN Security Council voted to reimpose savage economic restrictions on Iran over its nuclear program. European leaders have in recent months repeatedly accused Tehran of refusing to abide by the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action’s terms. A core, repeated claim is the Islamic Republic has collated a uranium stock over 40 times the level permitted under that deal. No supporting evidence for the charge has been provided, and the source of this information isn’t clear.
The Health Secretary has told his friends that the first part of his “Single Patient Record” will be rolled out by the end of the year.
We expect this rollout will be a “pilot” of the now-merged Department of Health in England (i.e. DH and the “abolished” NHS England) using government powers to impose decisions on the NHS frontline – not a pilot of a real ‘patient record’, nor real patient choice.

Ahmed Abu Artema is a Palestinian writer, poet and journalist. His vision of a nonviolent mass movement in Gaza to challenge Israel’s siege and blockade of the territory inspired the 2018 Great March of Return.
Global tensions continue to rise, as the Trump Admin supports more endless war, with the U.S. continuing the proxy war against Russia, supporting genocide in Palestine, planning for war against Iran and China, and also apparently plotting regime change in Venezuela and a return to Afghanistan.
But while a slew of countries have announced that they are moving to recognize a Palestinian State, they are doing so by condemning Hamas and supporting an unrealistic two-state solution that the U.S. continues to stand against.
Journalist and Geopolitical Analyst Danny Haiphong noted that the aggression we are seeing from the U.S. right now is indicative of an empire in decline, and Washington can’t see past its goals of control and domination to realize why so many countries are attracted to the SCO and BRICS alliances, and the partnerships they offer.
I first heard the word ‘depression’ when I was about sixteen. My mother took me to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru, India, to be seen by a professional for what I had just considered to be nightmares and difficult afternoons. I was lucky. Today, only 9% of people in the world receive treatment for depression. The doctor spoke to me for a long time, and I spent several days at NIMHANS being treated by this and other doctors. It was clear to me that my problems largely stemmed from a traumatic incident that took place a few years earlier, when I was raped in my school.
Hundreds of PAOK football club supporters and demonstrators marched through central Thessaloniki, Greece, on September 24, waving Palestine’s flags and chanting slogans against a UEFA Europa League match with “Israel’s” Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Protesters held signs reading “Your pitch, your choice. Boycott Israel” and “No to displacement and genocide,” denouncing what they called the “legalization of Israeli policies through sport.”
One demonstrator criticized the inclusion of Israeli teams in European competitions, arguing that “Israel” doesn’t “geographically belong to Europe” and that football should remain a game of joy, which cannot be shared “with representatives of a genocide”.

September 24 — As the Israeli government continues unabated its horrific genocide of Palestinians and the destruction of housing and infrastructure in Gaza, in the third attack on the 42-ship Global Sumud flotilla, drones attacked multiple boats in international waters south-west of the Greek island of Crete, this morning September 24, 2025.

An image of a downed US F-35 jet—wings destroyed, afterburner still glowing—starts to trend.
Millions of people watch a video of Tel Aviv in smoking ruins after an Iranian attack. Footage from a US bombing of Tehran takes the place of breaking news from a strike that is yet to happen. Look closer, and you see strange image errors and artifacts. The grass beneath the F-35 is eerily green and untouched. Things are slightly off. All these images are AI-generated, realistic on first glance, and shared widely on social media and beyond. This is the era of AI slopaganda.
The United States is building up its military assets, sparking fears of another regime change attempt against Venezuela—and this one could be far more deadly than the others. Citing an influx of Venezuelan drugs into the U.S., the Trump administration is rapidly building up its military forces, encircling the South American nation, one which has been in Washington’s crosshairs for over a quarter of a century.
MintPress News explores Trump’s extraordinary claims and assesses the history of U.S. efforts to overthrow the Venezuelan government. (more…)
