1. Housmans Peace Diary 2010

This year’s diary will soon be rolling of the presses, with distribution starting in October. As ever, this 57th edition includes a World Peace Directory listing almost 2,000 national organisations and international peace, environmental and human rights organisations in 150 countries. 2. Peace House 50th Birthday Celebrations

This year marks the 50th birthday of Peace House, aka 5 Caledonian Road. Over the years the building has been the home to a number of great campaign groups, such as Peace News, War Resisters’ International, London Region CND, the Campaign against Climate Change, Gay Switchboard, the Campaign Against Arms Trade, the McLibel campaign, No Sweat ,and many others. Oh, and Housmans!

We will be celebrating in fine style with an all-day benefit gig in King’s Cross. Already confirmed are protest singer Leon Rosselson (who is also celebrating his 50th year of performing!), top-notch comedy from Robin Ince and friends, Ian Saville Socialist Magician, as well as klezmer, folk, soul and blues from a range of fantastic acts. There will also be talks from guests across the peace movement, as well as people who have been involved with building over the years. Tickets for the event are not on sale just yet, but will be soon. For now, please put the date of Saturday 14th November in your diaries, and keep posted for more info.

3. Request for a volunteer electrician

Housmans could really do with some help on a few electrical matters. If you know of anyone who is a certified electrician who might be able to volunteer a few hours, please get in touch. Either call the shop or email nik@housmans.com. Thank you.

EVENTS IN OCTOBER

4. ‘Black Shoes’ by Michael Obiora
Saturday 3rd October – 5pm till 6.30pm

Michael Obiora, best known for his role as flamboyant receptionist Ben Trueman in BBC One’s Hotel Babylon, will be reading from his new novel, ‘Black Shoes’, which looks at a professional man’s quest to find his way through the maze of negative stereotypes, and his own personal battle with his identity. Michael will also be answering questions, and signing copies.

5. ‘Payback ’ with Rosemary Hayes
Saturday 10th October – 5pm till 6.30pm

Rosemary Hayes introduces her latest book for young adults, ‘Payback’, based on the actual experiences of a young Muslim woman who was brave enough to defy her family and reject the husband chosen for her.

6. Five Issues presents:
‘Necropolis: rehearsing Koltes in such times’

A play by Kolkata Campus
Wednesday 14th October – 7pm till 8.30pm

A unique performance of this political work of poetry-theatre inspired by ‘In the Solitude of Cottonfields’ by Bernard Marie Koltes, with additional texts from Slavok Zizek, Yulembam Ibomcha, Prabal Kumar Basu, Thangjam Ibopishak, Rajkumar Bhubonsana, Bhaskar Chakraborty, and Rabindranath Tagore.

7. PRE-ANARCHIST BOOKFAIR SPECIAL!

On the eve of this year’s Anarchist Bookfair, Housmans welcome the Revolutionary Anarcha-feminist Group from Dublin, who will be launching the latest issue of their magazine, whilst downstairs we will be screening a new documentary of ‘Colin Ward in Conversation with Roger Deakin’.

‘Lugo: The Priest of Paraguay’ with Hugh O’Shaughnessy

Saturday 31st October – 5pm till 6.30pm

Writer and broadcaster Hugh O’Shaughnessy will be discussing the implications of Paraguay’s new president Fernando Lugo, a bishop from a deprived diocese, who swept away the 60-year dictatorship of General Stroessner’s Colorado party. Followed by Q&A and signing.

Apologies to anyone who came to hear Hugh’s scheduled talk last month – this was postponed at the very last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.
