NEWS
1. January sale
Our in-store sale continues, and we’ve moved lots of new books into our extensive £1 section – bargains galore! Come by the shop and have a browse…
2. Lost Steps
Housmans co-manager Malcolm Hopkins has been busily putting together some fantastic radio interviews looking at lost and near-forgotten aspects of London history and culture. The ‘Lost Steps’ series has been being broadcast on London art station Resonance FM, but the shows are also available for download from http://www.loststeps.org.uk . Highlights include a potted history of London Music with Kevin Pearce, Clive Bloom exploring The Tottenham Outrage, Ken Worpole discussing Alexander Baron, and our own Albert Beale recounting 50 years of Peace House and Housmans history.
3. Discounts and other changes to events from the new year
We’re very proud of our events programme, and I hope you have come along to something that has caught your interest. In order to make the events even more attractive we have decided to introduce a couple of changes. First of all we will be talking with publishers, and working hard to ensure that for all book events there will be a discount available on the night. Furthermore, we will be offering a 10% discount on all books bought directly after the event – can’t say fairer than that!
You may have noticed that book events at other bookshops or meeting rooms usually require paying for entry. We are still committed to keeping all events at Housmans free, however from the new year we will be asking for a solidarity donation of £2 – still great value I hope you agree. Don’t forget that Housmans is run on a not-for-profit basis, and whilst bookshop small and large are shutting all around us, Housmans can only avoid the same fate with your support.
Thank you and hope to see you at Housmans soon.

9. ‘Real England’ by Paul Kingsnorth
£7.99
A wonderfully passionate exploration of the onslaught against non-commercialised, non-corporate life in Britain. From the closing of local shops to the death of the farming communities, Paul focuses on the human cost of these changes. ‘Real England’ serves as an important reminder of what’s at stake with the corporate takeover of Britain, and also leaves us with some optimism by showing green shoots of resistance, as people begin rising to the challenge of resistance against the onslaught. 10. ‘Footnotes in Gaza’ by Joe Sacco
£20
Joe Sacco has been much applauded for his earlier graphic novels, but with ‘Footnotes in Gaza’ he may well have created his masterpiece. His portrait of Gaza – the people and the place – is filled with humanity, and contradictions. The details ring of authenticity, whilst the narrative effortlessly spans the last fifty tragic years. A highly ambitious undertaking executed with perfection. Buy online at:
