Odysseus, Al-Nakba, and the Sea
Dr. Ali Qleibo, This Week in Palestine5/29/2010
…..The loss of Palestine is a trauma that our longing for the sea has come to symbolise. The sea breeze, once associated with the citrus blossom from the orchards that stretch along our coastal plains, dissipates under the weight of the tragic accounts describing the flight of the frightened Palestinians from their homeland to shores of safety in foreign lands. Following our defeat in the 1967 War West Bankers could once again visit their homeland along the Palestinian coast. Reconnaissance visits to their villages and ironic encounters with Israelis who had moved into their homes deployed a new discourse with a fairy-tale mythological quality.
As a Jerusalemite whose destiny chose that the 1948 War should stop one kilometre from his ancestral home I was always puzzled by the endless love between my friend Ibrahim Abu-Lughod and Jaffa. The great scholar, driven by the dream of the return, came at an advanced age to teach at Birzeit University. Every Sunday he would go to his hometown to swim. I could never understand how he could return to the city of his childhood, now a mere shell, emptied of family, friends, and the life that once populated its homes, markets, and streets.
As I swim, once I am deep in the sea, he told me, Jaffa becomes alive. I see it as it has always been. He became sentimental and laughingly told me, Al-Hajjeh (his old mother) always kept the keys of the Jaffa house. I would tease her: Why dont you throw them away? You know you will not return.
Even were I to be paid millions, I would never sell my home in Jaffa.
The key to a house either already demolished or inhabited by Israelis and the deed to the land of the ancestors are invariably the only concrete mementos that furnish the proof that the homeland was a reality and not a phantasm. The nostalgic narratives conjure the way of life and the landscape they have left behind….more..e-mail

US should include Hamas in peace efforts
Daoud Kuttab, Maan News Agency6/5/2010
The Israeli attack on the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla has put the United States in a difficult position. But it has also given Washington an opening for a game-changing action.
When ships on a humanitarian mission to the besieged Gaza Strip were violently confronted in international waters, the Obama administration was faced with a choice between one strategic ally, Israel, and a larger international community centered on a key NATO ally, Turkey. The United States also has to be careful to protect fragile Palestinian-Israeli proximity talks that took US envoy George Mitchell over a year to get started. Both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Mahmoud Abbas were due to visit Washington within a week of the confrontation, which left nine peace activists dead, including an American.
The United States also has to deal with a broader moral issue. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and other top US officials have repeatedly said that the status quo in the region, especially in Gaza, cannot continue, and the attempt to break a siege not sanctioned by the international community seems consistent with this aim. But complicating this dynamic is the United States decision not to deal with those in power in Gaza, a self-imposed restriction that doesnt make sense in light of President Obamas much-discussed pledge to break with the isolation of his predecessor and engage Americas foes. With the publication of the new US security strategy that omitted the phrase “Islamic terror” and distanced Washington from the doctrine of preemptive attacks, this boycott of Hamas appears even more counterproductive.
The Unites States cannot continue to be all but silent on an attack in international waters on civilians representing most Western countries, including the United States. It cannot hide behind the facade of waiting for an inquiry when basic facts such as the location of the attack, the perpetrators of the killings and the absence of violent intent or goods on board the ships are so obvious…..more..e-mail

Pirates of the Mediterranean
Abdaljawad OA Hamayel, Maan News Agency6/6/2010
The Freedom Flotilla sailed from different countries to break the siege of Gaza and rejuvenate debate and discussion over the 1.5 million besieged Palestinians with limited access to food, medicine and other essential goods and services.
The plan of the flotilla was announced weeks beforehand, their campaign started months in advance and they kept blogging, twittering, facebooking throughout their journey. Israel knew that these activists are on their way to break the siege and provide aid to the shambled and devastated Gaza Strip.
Their journey was full of challenges, first filling the cargo with cement, medicine and other essential goods which the Gaza Strip severely lacks, despite Israels claim otherwise. In fact, Israel tightened and restricted the entry of goods and services in June 2007. Goods such as medical equipment, wheel chairs, macaroni, cement, medicines, and toys for children all became illegal imports. Medical treatment outside the Gaza strip became virtually impossible; Palestinians from
Gaza living across the world are forbidden and prevented from visiting their families.
Adeem Abu Middain, a Palestinian from Gaza, living in Saudi Arabia told me I cant use the phrase I want to visit Gaza anymore because the doors of my own city are closed and my city is besieged for almost four years. May I know what have we done to deserve this deprivation of our basic rights such as visiting our families , watching the sunset on Gaza beach ,smell the Orange trees of my fathers lovely farm.
In fact, Israel only recently allowed limited entry of specific goods, and still prevents reconstruction material from entering. According to one UN estimate, the Gaza tunnels provide 80% of the essential needs for those living in Gaza, so perhaps Mark Regev and others in Israels PR machine should not delude and lie to the press when they claim that “Israel allows enough humanitarian aid.”more..e-mail

What happened to us is happening in Gaza
Electronic Intifada: 6 Jun 2010 – In the predawn hours of 31 May, I was aboard the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara , part of a convoy of humanitarian vessels aiming to deliver aid to besieged civilians in Gaza, when we were attacked in international waters by a unit of Israeli commandos. Iara Lee comments.

Israel’s Challenge to Turkey
Palestine Chronicle: 6 Jun 2010 – By Jeremy Salt Ankara In the wake of the storming of the Mavi Marmara (Blue Marmara), the truth cannot be obscured by the propaganda pouring out of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, particularly out of the mouth of the repulsive Mark Regev. The ship was sailing in international waters when it was attacked. The blockade of Gaza has been described by the UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, as illegal. The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, has been calling for months for it to be lifted. Israel has no rights in Gaza or in the waters off Gaza, and no rights in international rights beyond those belonging to all shipping. What it described as a ‘police action’ was in fact not just an act of piracy but an act of war. The attack was ordered by the government of Israel. The Israeli assault force could see that the ship was…more

The Right to Exist: Who Has It? Where Is It? Why?
Palestine Chronicle: 6 Jun 2010 – By Gary Corseri Does Israel have a ‘right to exist’? Do we? It’s a shibboleth of the Zionist entity: ‘Israel has the right to exist!’ But what is this ‘Israel’? What is this ‘right to exist’? Where is it written? Is it in Holy Scripture? The Song of Songs? The Book of Job? Proverbs? Ecclesiastes? Is it written in stone on two tablets by the finger of God? What does it mean when a people declare that they have the right to exist as they please because they are a democracy, but other people have no such right? I solemnly declare my elections legitimatethe will of my people—, but it is obvious that you people over there (in Gaza, in Turkey, in Iran, etc.) do not have the capacity to choose leaders who can represent your true interests! What does that mean? Israel refuses to negotiate with Hamaswill not…more

‘No Citizenship without Loyalty!’
Palestine Chronicle: 6 Jun 2010 – By Neve Gordon In Israel, almost all of the protests against the navys assault on the relief flotilla took place in Palestinian space. Palestinian citizens in almost every major town and city, from Nazareth to Sachnin and from Arabe to Shfaram, demonstrated against the assault that left nine people dead and many more wounded. The one-day general strike called for by the Palestinian leadership within Israel was, for the most part, adhered to only by Arab citizens. In Jewish space, by contrast, business continued as usual. Except for a demonstration in front of the Ministry of Defence in Tel Aviv, which brought together a few hundred activists, the only site where there was some sign of a grassroots protest against the raid was on Israeli university campuses. While numerically these protests were also insignificant there were fewer than 2000 demonstrators from all the different campuses, out of a student…more

South Africa Must Cut All Ties with Israel
Palestine Chronicle: 6 Jun 2010 – By Iqbal Jassat Pretoria South Africa’s response to the dastardly act of piracy and blatant savagery by the Israeli regime is reflective of a global mood that is increasingly becoming less tolerant of contemptuous disregard for international obligations flowing from a variety of conventions. In addition to the decision to recall its Tel Aviv based ambassador, South Africa has also summoned the Israeli ambassador and presented him with a demarche, the strongest possible diplomatic protest short of expulsion. And included among 31 nations on the UN Human Rights Council, South Africa voted in support of a resolution that condemned Israels outrageous attack and endorsed a full inquiry into the incident. These moves have been welcomed by an array of civil society groups as well as the powerful labour movement COSATU. Muslim and Christian leaders alike from formations such as the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) and the South African Council…more

Flotilla in Context: Rise People, Rise
Palestine Chronicle: 6 Jun 2010 – By Rich Wiles Through the recent murderous events in international waters Israel has once again shown its true colours and its total disregard for humanity. From the global reaction over the last week it seems, that for once, a huge majority of people around the world have seen these attacks in a clear light. Let us call a massacre a massacre. Whilst these atrocities have clearly appalled millions of people, the inhumanity of the Zionist regime should have come as no surprise, for this is nothing new. What happened to the dedicated human rights activists about the flotilla in the early hours of Monday May 31st was yet another example of Israels barbarity against innocent human beings, yet by the following afternoon it could not even be called the latest attack. As people around the world took to the streets to call for an end to Israels impunity, people in…more

Turks Curtail Nationalism: They Are Palestinian
Palestine Chronicle: 6 Jun 2010 – By Belen Fernandez – Istanbul This afternoon at Istanbul’s Beyazt Mosque, the funeral ceremony was held for Turkish humanitarian aid activist Cevdet Kllar, one of 9 victims of the Israeli attack on Monday on the Mavi Marmara en route to Gaza. The full fatality list, which was inexplicably withheld until yesterday, includes 7 other Turkish citizens and a 19-year-old high school student named Furkan Doan with a United States passport, although the U.S. State Departments noncommittal pledge to look into the circumstances of the death of an American citizen suggests that
the administration might prefer to relinquish territorial responsibility for him. In fact, it appears that international territorial boundaries are becoming increasingly tailored to the whims of Israel, which is now under the impression that it is entitled not only to the land of Palestine but also Lebanese airspace and the Mediterranean Sea, with additional claims suggested by the attendance…more
