Doubts Grow Over Israels Value as US Ally
Jim Lobe, Antiwar.com6/4/2010
Israels disastrous raid in international waters Monday on a Turkish-flagged flotilla carrying humanitarian supplies to Gaza has resurrected a long-running debate over whether Washingtons close alliance with the Jewish state really serves U.S. strategic interests.
Ironically, one negative answer was provided in Jerusalem Tuesday by none other than the head of Israels vaunted foreign-intelligence agency, Mossad.
Noting, among other things, the disappearance of the Soviet and Western blocs with the end of the Cold War, Mossad chief Meir Dagan told members of the Israeli parliaments Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Tuesday that “Israel is gradually turning from an asset to the United States to a burden.”
That view was emphatically re-asserted the following day by one of Washingtons most highly respected and centrist Middle East analysts in an essay entitled “Israel as a Strategic Liability?” that instantly became must-reading for regional specialists both in and outside the administration of President Barack Obama.
“At the best of times, an Israeli government that pursues the path to peace provides some intelligence, some minor advances in military technology, and a potential source of stabilizing military power that could help Arab states like Jordan,” wrote Anthony Cordesman, a long-time fixture of the foreign policy establishment at the Center for Strategic and
International Studies (CSIS).
“It is time Israel realized that it has obligations to the United States, as well as the United States to Israel, and that it (has to) become far more careful about the extent to which it test(s) the limits of U.S. patience and exploits the support of American Jews,” he went on….more..e-mail
Israel under fire for doctoring flotilla recordings
Mya Guarnieri, Maan News Agency6/5/2010
Tel Aviv – Israels military came under intense scrutiny Saturday after releasing a new, heavily edited version of a video it had distributed to journalists in the days following its deadly raid on a Gaza-bound aid convoy.
Initially distributing footage of its navy radioing the Turkish vessel Mavi Marmara prior to a raid that left nine dead Monday, the military released a new version Friday that it said proves its claims that many aboard were religious extremists.
The audio includes two lines meant to demonstrate fanaticism on the part of Muslim passengers on board the ship, many of whom Israels army has claimed had “terrorist” ties. “Shut up. Go back to Aushwitz,” one man purportedly tells a navy officer via radio before another, with a heavy Southern accent, states that “Were helping Arabs go against the US. Dont forget 9/11 guys.”
Bloggers soon picked up on discrepancies between the two. Maan also investigated, approaching the army early Saturday and confirming with Huwaida Arraf, a Palestinian activist and chair of the Free Gaza Movement, that her voice was used in the recording. She is heard speaking normally via radio.
Saturdays version supposedly came from the Marmara, at least according to the military. But Arraf was actually a passenger on another of the flotillas boats, the Challenger 1.
Under mounting pressure, the army ultimately released yet another version of the recording late Saturday, bringing to three the total number of different takes on what the military insists is the same event.
The army issued what it called a “clarification/correction,” explaining that “There have been questions regarding the authenticity of the recording as well as its attribution to a communication with the Mavi Marmara,” a statement said.more..e-mail
Flotilla Fallout: Are Teams Right to Refuse to Play Israel?
David Zirin, Dissident Voice6/4/2010
[We are] saddened by the mixture of politics and sports.
So said a spokesperson for the Israeli Football Association in response to Mondays news that the Turkish U-19 (under 19) soccer team canceled its match in Israel. Turkeys team made the move following the Israeli Navys attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla that left at least 10 dead and scores injured. Then on Tuesday, the Swedish Football Association announced that it would formally request European soccers governing body to cancel Swedens U-21 game in Israel later this week.
The SFA said that they felt morally compelled to make the move following the flotilla attack and the harsh responses to those events in Sweden and around the world. SFA President Lars-Ake Lagrell said, Like all human beings, we deplore violence and are shocked at what we sawIts not pleasant to play in Israel at this juncture. On Wednesday it appeared that the game would, in fact, go forward as planned, with Lagrell saying, Since the United Nations has not decided on any sanctions against Israel we are obliged to go ahead with the match under [European football association] rules.
This certainly wont be the last time we hear about countries, teams, or players holding up the flotilla killings as reason to ostracize Israel in the realm of international sport. The question, to pick up the ball from the Israeli Football Association, is whether it should sadden us to see politics and sports so brazenly intertwined? Should Israeli sport actually be safe space from how its government conducts itself?
In my mind, the answer is a simple one: hell, no. Israel committed an act of state terror on an aid ship in international waters whose passengers included an 85-year-old holocaust survivor, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, and hundreds of activists committed to delivering the most basic kinds of food and medicine to the Gaza Strip. Its actually dangerous, in such a situation, to just shut up and play as if there is nothing to see behind the royal blue curtain.more..e-mail
Gaza occupation and siege are illegal
Electronic Intifada: 5 Jun 2010 – Israel’s deadly attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla was flagrantly illegal. Popular Anger Grows As World Leaders Let Flotilla Killers Off The Hook
Palestine Monitor: 5 Jun 2010 – With as many at least nine young lives taken in international waters and the Middle East once again plunged into crisis, the so-called leaders of the world have done nothing but petition Israel to investigate and punish itself. Reporting from Aaron Dearborn. As attention now shifts from the high seas to closed door meetings in Washington, Ankara and the Hague, there is a growing frustration as politicians and spin doctors ingloriously try to manage the diplomatic fall-out of the pre-dawn massacre. In many ways, this response is telling. Such hesitation and gross spinelessness from our elected leaders in confronting Israel was what necessitated the Freedom Flotilla in the first place. But with demonstrations against the brutality of the IDF taking place around the world, it is now the credibility of Arab and Western governments themselves that stands in the firing line. Civilians have been attacked. Civilians have been massacred. Civilians…
Flotilla Activists Interviewed: “Beaten on the ship and at the airport”
Palestine Monitor: 4 Jun 2010 – The six Italian activists, part of the Flotilla headed to Gaza and attacked by Israeli commandos while in international waters, are back in Italy. Manolo Luppichini arrived yesterday at Ciampino airport (Rome). Palestine Monitor had the chance to interview him soon after his arrival. He reported that victims of the Israeli assault on the Freedom Flotilla number 19 people and not 9, as declared until today. Luppichini did not see directly the dead bodies but his source is Australian Jennie Campbell, one of the nurs
es present on the boat. Campbell, who was on the Mavi Marmara with her husband, told Luppichini she counted 19 bodies. In addition to the difficulty in tracking down the precise number of victims, there have also been conflicting reports about those still missing. Turkish PM Erdogan said today that nobody is missing from the passenger manifests, even if some people are still hospitalised in Israel….
