GazaFriends: Marbles, paint balls and nukes

1 June, 2010

The Israeli military has been busy spinning the story of their attack on a civilian convoy trying to deliver aid to the imprisoned people of Gaza. They’ve had a head start, sending out edited videos, posting ‘supposed’ military footage of the passengers attacking them, saying that they confiscated weapons which turned out to be marbles, sling shots, kitchen knives and aluminum chairs.

But they can’t spin for much longer. Video footage from dozens of people is beginning to surface about what really happened. Al Jazeera has posted their coverage as gun shots sound in the background, speakers beg the passengers to go below and a white flag is set out for the paramilitary groups.

More will come out as passengers are released. We already know that Israel shot the captain of the Marmara and the European Campaign boat, maybe hoping that we would no longer be able to hire captains. Several activists have spoken to their Consulates and told of being kicked, beaten, dragged along the ground, tear gassed and bags thrown over their heads.

Knowing that video of this vicious attack in international waters was going to surface, Captain Aria Shaliker of the Israel Defense Forces, who was part of the operation on Monday, said the commandos began the raids armed with paint ball guns. “I was, myself, on one of the boats, the Israeli boats, approaching the flotilla,” he told the BBC’s World Today programme. “It is true that the Israeli commander unit… came on board with paint ball weapons… in order to disperse people.

No mention of paint-stained clothing.

As Israel’s hysteria mounts, “they now claim “self defense” in attacking ships in international waters today, killing 9.  Israel informed the US and Britain that the convoy was ferrying stolen nuclear weapons that would be used for a terrorist attack on Israel.  The “stolen nukes” have been in Israel for 18 years while the US has spent billions of dollars and thousands of lives looking for them. Today 9 more died. http://mycatbirdseat.com/2010/06/gordon-duff-israel-scams-u-s-%E2%80%9Cgaza-convoy-carrying-stolen-nukes%E2%80%9D/

The world is watching a county imploding, having a massive nervous breakdown in full view. It’s tragic that thousands of Palestinians have died and 9 human rights workers lost their lives yesterday.

Media Advisory: Reporting Israeli Assault Through Israel’s Eyes

1 June, 2010 — FAIR

Attack on humanitarian flotilla prompts little media skepticism

On May 31, the Israeli military attacked a flotilla of boats full of civilians attempting to deliver humanitarian supplies to the Gaza Strip. Reports indicate that at least nine and as many as 16 of the activists on board were killed, though details remain sketchy due to Israel’s censorious limitations on media coverage. Much of the U.S. media coverage has been remarkably unskeptical of Israel’s account of events and their context, and has paid little regard to international law.

The New York Times (6/1/10) glossed over the facts of the devastating Israeli siege of Gaza, where 1.5 million people live in extreme poverty. As reporter Isabel Kershner wrote, “Despite sporadic rocket fire from the Palestinian territory against southern Israel, Israel says it allows enough basic supplies through border crossings to avoid any acute humanitarian crisis.”

Asking Israel to explain the effects of its embargo on the people of Gaza makes little sense, especially when there are plenty of other resources available. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported (IRIN, 5/18/10): Continue reading

The Lone Ship of the Freedom Flotilla: The Rachel Corrie MV Continues to Sail Towards Gaza in Defiance of Israeli Threats By Michel Chossudovsky

1 June, 2010 — Global Research

rachel-corrie.jpgFollowing Israel’s criminal raid in international waters on May 31st, the Rachel Corrie MV continues to sail towards the Gaza coastline in defiance of Israeli threats.

In an act of tremendous courage, the Rachel Corrie MV is determined to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza.

At noon today, I received the following message from Christopher Chang and Ram Kardigasu, on behalf of the Malaysian and Irish peace activists, who are on board the Rachel Corrie:

RACHEL CORRIE: MV Rachel Corrie is now the sole ship on the international freedom flotilla moving towards Gaza.

The Malaysian and Irish peace and humanitarian activists aboard share their deepest grief and sense of lost with the loved ones of those killed and injured in the illegal action undertaken by Israel on Monday 31st May 2010 in the international waters of the Mediterranean.

In the names of our friends, we are more determined than ever to continue into Gaza with our humanitarian cargo and our support for the blockaded and suffering people of Gaza.

We expect Israel to respond to the international condemnation of its violence by not impeding by any means the safe passage of the Rachel Corrie.

We appeal to the international community and United Nations to continue to demand Israel our safe passage into Gaza.

Jointly issued by Malaysians and Irish on board the Rachel Corrie.

Sent on behalf of the humanitarian activists on aboard the Rachel Corrie – by PGPO land team (Ram Karthigasu and Christopher Chang)

In recent developments, the Netanyahu government is in crisis:

“Senior ministers [of the Netanyahu cabinet] have been sharply critical of the fact that the decision to seize control of the flotilla to Gaza was made after two meetings of the forum of seven senior ministers but without official deliberation by the inner cabinet, the body that has the authority to approve military actions of this scale.” What this suggests is that the actual decision to conduct the raids in international waters bypassed the Cabinet. (Haaretz.com headlines RSS)

The question remains: if the Israeli cabinet did not ratify the operation, who ordered the raids and through what procedure?

  • What were the respective roles of Israeli intelligence and the IDF in planning these raids?
  • What role was played by Rahm Emmanuel, Obama’s White House Chief of Staff, who had meetings with both Netanyahu and president Shimon Peres, respectively on May 26 and 27?
  • Did Rahm Emmanuel meet officials of Israel’s military and intelligence establishment?
  • Did the Obama administration give the Green Light?

It is important that this news gets out, with a view to ensuring that the Rachel Corrie MV safely reaches the coast of Gaza without encroachment, with a view to breaking Israel’s criminal embargo.

In this endeavor we shall prevail.  Our hearts and minds are with those who continue to sail on board the Rachel Corrie MV.

It should be noted that Israel has not in any way modified its policy with regard to the Rachel Corrie MV: There are two more ships heading for Gaza including the Rachel Corrie MV. Israel has promised “to respond even more harshly”:

“Israel will use more aggressive force in the future to prevent ships from breaking the sea blockade on the Gaza Strip, a top Navy commander told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.

“We boarded the ship and were attacked as if it was a war,” the officer said. “That will mean that we will have to come prepared in the future as if it was a war.” (www.ynetnews.com)

The Rachel Corrie MV is in part supported by the Perdana Global Peace Organization under the helm of the Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. Global Research Director Michel Chossudovsky is a member of the Perdana Global Peace Organisation and of the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Commission.

US Navy Veterans Continue to Seek Justice for Israeli Attack By Dahr Jamail

1 June 2010 — t r u t h o u t | Report

The Israeli military has attacked a flotilla of international peace activists, killing as many as 19 innocent civilians while they were carrying ten tons of aid through international waters to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza. This is not the first time the Israeli military has attacked a nonthreatening entity in international waters.

On June 8, 1967, while sailing in international waters, the US Navy intelligence ship USS Liberty was attacked by air and naval forces of the state of Israel. Of the Liberty’s crew of 294, more than half were killed or wounded. More than 40 years later, survivors are still seeking justice.

The Israeli forces attacked with full knowledge that the Liberty was an American ship, yet survivors have been forbidden to tell their story under oath to the American public.

Viva Palestina’s Kevin Ovenden Gaza Aid leader latest

1 June 2010 — Viva Palestina

kevin-Ovenden.jpgTHIS photo of Kevin Ovenden, 42, from East Ham, the leader of the Gaza aid flotilla was taken on the Mavi Marmara just days before it was captured in the bloody commando raid by Israeli forces yesterday which left at least 19 dead and 50 injured.

There is still no concrete news on his fate.

At this time the organising Viva Palestina charity expressed growing concern for his safety having failed to make direct contact with him.

“We still have had no news about Kevin’s whereabouts or whether or not he has been injured,” said its spokeswoman Alice Howard.

A veteran of three previous aid runs, Mr Ovenden has worked as a parliamentary assistant to the former Tower Hamlets Respect MP George Galloway in his constituency office in Shoreditch.

It is also revealed that another East Londoner, named as Noor Chudhary, from Tower Hamlets, was also sailing with the ‘Freedom Flotilla’.

The group’s only news has come from monitoring Turkish TV.

Said Ms Howard: “From what we have seen the detainees have been escorted off the ship, questioned ands detailed. There appears to be only two outcomes – deportation or prison.”

Israel has since apologised for loss of life and claimed its forces were attacked by a mass mob and they were forced to defend themselves.

Just before the raid Mr Ovenden wrote on the charity’s official website: “We are 90 miles from land – 22 miles further than the Israel decided 68 mile exclusion zone – but we are being approached by an Israeli vessel.

“Triage is set up and various strategies implemented to resist seizure.

Norman G. Finkelstein: “Israel Is Now a Lunatic State” By Nadezhda Kevorkova

1 June, 2010

Norman G. Finkelstein: What happened with the Gaza flotilla was not an accident. You have to remember that the Israeli cabinet met for fully a week. All the cabinet ministers discussed and deliberated how they would handle the flotilla. There were numerous reports in the Israeli press, numerous suggestions, numerous recommendations about what to do. At the end of the day, they decided on a nighttime armed commando raid on a humanitarian convoy. Israel is now a lunatic state. It’s a lunatic state with between two and three hundred nuclear devices. It is threatening war daily against Iran and against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Hezbollah in Lebanon has already stated on several occasions: if Israel attacks it will retaliate in kind. Things are getting out of control. We have to ask ourselves a simple, basic, fundamental question: can a lunatic state like Israel be trusted with two to three hundred nuclear devices when it is now threatening its neighbors Iran and Lebanon with an attack?

Norman G. Finkelstein is the author of ‘This Time We Went Too Far’: Truth and Consequences of the Gaza Invasion; Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History; The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering; Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict; A Nation on Trial: The Goldhagen Thesis and Historical Truth (with Ruth Bettina Birn); and The Rise and Fall of Palestine: A Personal Account of the Intifada Years. Hebrew University to Remove Judge Goldstone from its Board of Governors

1 June 2010 — Alternative Information Center (AIC)

Hebrew University of Jerusalem will remove Judge Goldstone from its Board of Governors, for the “technical” reason that he has not attended Board meetings. So reports the Hebrew-language news site nrg.co.il.

Substantial political pressure has been exerted by American and European donors on Hebrew University President Professor Menachem Ben Sasson and the university administration to remove Judge Goldstone following the report issued by the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict, a mission which Goldstone led. The report, which outlined grave human rights violations by Israel in its December 2008- January 2009 military attack on the Gaza Strip, in addition to possible war crimes and crimes against humanity, was categorically rejected by the Israeli government, which commenced a campaign of vilification against Judge Goldstone.

The Hebrew University did not respond to a request by the Alternative Information Center (AIC) for clarification of why Judge Goldstone will be removed by its Board of Governors.

The Hebrew University has a long history of directly and indirectly supporting the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and dispossession of the Palestinian people. This support includes the confiscation of Palestinian lands; the hiring of former military and intelligence officials, including the former head of the General Security Services, Carmi Gilon, as Vice President for External Relations; financial support to student-soldiers who served during Israel’s military attacks on Gaza about which Judge Goldstone wrote; and demanding police-issued ‘character references” from Palestinian but not Jewish non-student visitors to its campuses.

The Alternative Information Center (AIC) calls on international solidarity activists to contact Hebrew University and express your support for the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, including an academic boycott, due to actions such as the removal of Judge Goldstone from the Board of Governors.

Israel: Assaulting our future Satya Sagar

1 June, 2010

Once again the Israelis have carried out a despicable act of wanton destruction, this time killing over a score peace activists aboard aid ships headed for Gaza.

The flotilla was attacked in international waters, 65 km off the Gaza coast as it carried 10,000 tones of humanitarian aid challenging the Israeli blockade.

Watching the unfolding outrage a simple question very high on many minds must be “How in hell does this artificially concocted child of European guilt and American ambition get away with all this again and again and again?’

The answer is that instead of being a strange historical aberration Israel may well be a model state that global elites want to establish to control the world in the days to come.

Response in Israel to aid ship attack

1 June, 2010 — The Real News Network

Israeli officials and media say attack on Gaza flotilla that left nearly 20 dead was in self-defense.

At roughly 4:00a.m. on Monday morning Israeli navy and air force troops intercepted a convoy of six ships that attempted to deliver 10,000 tons of aid to the besieged Gaza strip. The convoy, known as the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, was inspected by several governments and was a highly publicized action. Israeli officials warned the ships they will not be allowed to reach Gaza’s shores, when the ships attempted to do so in order to break the siege on Gaza, the Israeli army attacked them, leaving 20 international activists dead and dozens injured. Hundreds are currently in Israeli jails. The Real News’ Lia Tarachansky investigates what Israeli officials and Israeli media have been reporting about this attack.

Israel is a victim of its own pathology! By Eyad Sarraj

1 June, 2010 — The National

Resorting to brute force is an expression of fear. Its deployment yesterday by the Israeli soldiers who raided and opened fire on the freedom flotilla on route to Gaza, killing more than ten civilians and injuring dozens more, will not serve Israel or treat its existential anxiety.

As a psychologist and a resident of Gaza, I understand Israel’s reflexive use of force against civilians as a symptom of a structural pathology. Israel resorts to the use of maximum force as a form of intimidation. But this is the choice of the weak. It is quite possible that through Israel’s actions, it is tightening its own noose.

More than a decade ago the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu published a book defending Israel’s right to “a place under the sun”. But it is the racist desire to create “a nation above nations” that is the desire of Zionist extremists. In this context, peace is an anathema; the siege and war on Gaza are legitimate and justified; Israel will use every possible means to avoid reaching a peace agreement with the Palestinians.

Israeli Strike on Freedom Flotilla to Gaza is Part of a Broader Military Agenda

War Criminal Prime Minister Netanyahu, who directly ordered the strike on the international flotilla to Gaza was on an official visit to Canada at the time of the Israeli attack.  The strike constitutes an act of piracy in violation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Netanyahu’s actions, which have resulted, in more than 10 deaths and up to 60 injured constitute a criminal act committed in international waters. (BBC News – Deaths as Israeli forces storm Gaza aid ship).

In a cruel irony, Netanyahu in a recent statement, committed himself to peace with Palestine: “We want to move as speedily as possible to direct talks because the kind of problem that we have with the Palestinians can be resolved in peace and can be arranged only if we sit down together”.

Several prominent personalities as well as several Global Research authors and partners were on board the ships.

Israeli deadly assault on aid ships sparks worldwide outcry

1 June, 2010 — RT Top Stories

Strong condemnation is growing around the world after the Israeli military attacked a flotilla of ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, thus violating international maritime law.

Media reports say at least 9 pro-Palestinian activists were killed and about 40 injured as Israelis boarded one of the ships and opened fire at its passengers and crew. Earlier reports gave the number of dead as 19, but verified death toll proved to be lower, but the situation still can change as many of the wounded escaped commandos and were locked inside their cabins without proper medical help.

All the ships of the flotilla had arrived in the port of Ashdod by midday Tuesday. The activists, whose total number is estimated at over 600, are to be interrogated and then deported, however, those who fail to co-operate may face imprisonment.

Some of the detained activists have refused to name their nationality and citizenship, which makes it impossible to deport them for the moment, reports Belgian TV channel RTL. According to the channel, only 48 foreigners have so far agreed to be deported and signed a written statement, while at least 480 are being kept prisoner. 45 are in hospitals.

GazaFriends: Update on Israeli Attack on Humanitarian Boats

1 June, 2010 — Free Gaza

Cyprus – The UN Security Council Calls for Impartial, Credible Investigation of Israeli Boat Raid. The raid in international waters, on the aid convoy headed to Gaza left at least 16 civilians dead. After an emergency session wrapped up in the early hours this morning, the council agreed to language condemning the acts that resulted in the deaths and injuries aboard the Turkish vessel Mavi Marmara and the European Campaign’s vessel Spendoni.

The council called for a prompt, impartial, credible and transparent investigation conforming to international standards. The council statement also reemphasized the importance of implementing U.N. resolution 1860, which calls for the unimpeded provision and distribution of humanitarian assistance to Gaza’s 1.5 million residents. The flow of aid has been severely hampered by Israel’s three-year blockade on the Gaza Strip.

Yesterday, Israeli-licensed attorneys filed two habeas briefs: one is asking for to release the passengers and the boats, so we can continue on our way to Gaza, since it was illegal to stop us in international waters. The other one is asking for information on all of the passengers, because there has been a total blackout on where the passengers are, who was wounded and who was murdered.

Lawyers are only being allowed access for three hours every day from 13:00-16:30. They have the names of three Palestinians still in detention: Sheik Salah, Mohammad Zeidan and Lubna Marsawa.

Haneen Zuabi, a member of the Israeli Knesset, has been released, because she has immunity as a member of the Knesset. She held a press conference this morning in Nazareth to talk about the attack. She was on board the Mavi Marmara

WILL THE RULE OF LAW BE APPLIED TO ISRAEL THIS TIME? By Daniel Machover

1 June, 2010 — Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights

In principle, it is unlawful for a State to enforce a blockade against ships which are flying the flag of another State in the high seas. The only exceptions to this would be if the blockade were mandated by the UN Security Council acting under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. The basic principle under customary international law as regards ships in international waters was set out by the Permanent Court of International Justice in the Lotus case (1927):

‘…vessels on the high seas are subject to no authority except that of the State whose flag they fly. In virtue of the principle of the freedom of the seas, that is to say, the absence of any territorial sovereignty upon the high seas, no State may exercise any kind of jurisdiction over foreign vessels upon them.’

While international law does allow for exceptions to the above rule, entitling warships to interfere with ships flying the flag of another state while in international waters in limited circumstances, those exceptions do not apply to the events of 31 May 2010. Indeed, a 1988 treaty (to which Israel is a party) criminalises the unlawful and intentional seizure or exercise of control over a ship by force and all connected injuries or deaths.

If the Israeli boarding of the ship was illegal, then arguably the passengers were entitled to act in self-defence against the invading commandos. If so, they could use reasonable force to defend themselves: the amount of force permitted being determined by Turkish law. And that is the point: it is clearly Turkish criminal law that can and should predominate from this point on. The Mavi Marmara is a Turkish registered ship and was travelling peacefully in international waters when Israeli forces boarded it. At least one of the dead civilians is reportedly a Turkish citizen. The Turkish authorities have the absolute right to assert that their criminal justice system take sole charge of a criminal investigation.

Turkey is therefore perfectly entitled to demand that all evidence, including the identity of all Israeli naval and other forces, is handed over to its criminal justice authorities for a full investigation and that Israel allow Turkish law enforcement officials unimpeded access to the Israeli suspects. Israel is after all a party to the 1959 European Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters.

If Israel were to refuse, the UN Security Council, if concerned about a threat to international peace and security, could then back Turkish and international demands to this effect in a Chapter VII resolution. The question therefore arises: will Turkey and the international community require Israel to comply with the rule of law on this occasion?

Gaza Freedom Flotilla Massacre News Roundup 1 June, 2010

1 June, 2010 — Creative-i

For convenience, I’ve gathered together all the stories published so far (20:29 London time) on the barbaric attack by the Israeli military on 700-800 unarmed people attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, killing at least 19 people and injuring dozens more. The remainder have been abducted and taken apparently to Ashdod.

Israeli Deputy FM Ayalon lies through his teeth about the flotilla massacre By Mary Rizzo

31 May, 2010 — Palestine Think Tank

Ayalon.jpgIt is impossible for one to maintain calm while reading lies. Today’s dosage of lies (called Hasbara, and from now on, when an Israeli is lying, I will start to use the very “to hasbara”, conjugated appropriately) was more poisonous than usual. It runs under the topic of “defending atrocities”, which is only slightly less frequent than the “defending racist policies” rubric. My comments to these obscene utterings from the Israeli Foreign Affairs Ministy in Rabid Red.

Seizure of the Gaza flotilla: Press conference with Deputy FM Ayalon

DEPUTY FM AYALON: Good morning, everyone. I want to report this morning that the armada of hate and violence in support of the Hamas terror organization was a premeditated and outrageous provocation.

Thus begins the greatest lie/hasbara of the day. The invention of a catchy little phrase that only the most audacious would utilise word for word, but the hasbarists will have time to refine it. That they choose to put Hamas and “terror” right in the first line, though is the most important part. This is what may pass to the international news agencies, which is the whole point, and the statements made earlier in the day by outraged politicians the world over are being softened as the minutes pass. Of course the flotilla was premeditated, and of course it was a provocation! How else can one do things with Israel there? Spontaneous, improvised and expecting applause? The intent, however was not violent and there’s not a stitch of evidence for this, but the violence that follows such an act of a bloody massacre indeed is spontaneous and very real. People are enraged. It is right to be enraged by such an attack on humanitarians bringing aid!!! However, let’s assume that cement powder can be lethal if the bags are swung around, and that paper can cause lots of cuts on the fingers that make it hard to pull triggers of Uzis. Continue reading
