Nadia Barhoum, This Week in Palestine5/29/2010
“Exile is strangely compelling to think about but terrible to experience. It is the unhealable rift forced between a human being and its native place, between the self and its true home: its essential sadness can never be surmounted.”Edward Said
“I’m just following orders,” the soldier said as he asked my father to strip his clothes. Instantly after checking our passports and spotting our Arabic family name, the soldiers separated my family for a routine strip-search at the Allenby border between Jordan and Palestine. These were words I would hear time and time again during my summer visits to Palestine. I was five years old at the time and did not completely understand what was happening; why did we have to listen to these people tell us what to do?
Almost every summer, my family – father, mother, sister, brother – and I would journey to Jordan and Palestine. Our family, originally from Al Malha, was forever removed from our village in 1948 and had to seek refuge in Bethlehem on the West Bank. In 1967, my father and some of his family fled again, this time to Jordan, thus leaving behind their home and any chance of permanent return to the West Bank. Later, my father continued his studies in the States, where he eventually settled. Dispersed across the globe, with uncles in Frankfurt, Ramallah, Dubai, and Amman, an aunt in Beitunia, and my father in California, our family is truly Palestinian.
My father resisted through facts – always telling me, “Arm yourself with knowledge, Nadia.” It was one of the only ways we could fight back. The knowledge he would give me during our summer visits to Palestine had no price tag or textbook attached to it. It was an education that transcended the borders of the classroom and nation. These experiences of visiting the West Bank and Gaza Strip throughout my childhood generated in me a sense of home, identity, pride, and cause; in these moments and memories my roots grew and grew and grew.more..e-mail

Palestinian-Israeli MP who joined flotilla faces witch-hunt
Jonathan Cook, Ma’an News Agency6/8/2010
Orna Kohn, a lawyer with Adalah…said Yishai’s move was “uncharted legal territory” that could leave Zoubi stateless, in violation of international law.
Nazareth – An Israeli parliamentary committee recommended stripping a Palestinian member of the Knesset of her privileges in a Monday move that appeared to prepare the ground for putting her on trial for participating in the Gaza-bound aid flotilla attacked by Israeli commandos last week.
Haneen Zoubi, who quickly became a national hate figure in Israel since challenging the government’s account of the confrontation, said on Tuesday that she was facing “a witch-hunt.”
Israel’s interior minister Eli Yishai submitted a formal request for the revocation of her citizenship and proposed a bill – labeled the Zoubi Law – currently being considered, that would allow a serving MP to be expelled for “inciting” against the state.
Zoubi was provided with a bodyguard after receiving a spate of death threats. A popular Facebook page in Hebrew has called for her execution and an online petition for her expulsion from the parliament attracted tens of thousands of supporters.
Last week, in unprecedented scenes as she tried to address parliament, Zoubi was heckled into silence by Jewish legislators shouting out “terrorist” and “traitor.” Guards only narrowly prevented a far-right parliamentarian from attacking her.
Tuesday’s hearing of the parliament’s house committee was originally intended to consider revoking the immunity of six Palestinian MKs, including Zoubi, who traveled to Libya in April. All Palestinian MKs boycotted the meeting.more..e-mail

Challenger I passengers: Commandos shot first
Mya Guarnieri, Ma’an News Agency6/8/2010
Tel Aviv – Ma’an – Alex Harrison, a British activist who participated in the Freedom Flotilla, was on the neighboring Challenger I when the Israeli army overtook the Mavi Marmara, leaving at least nine activists dead and dozens injured.
An eyewitness to the takeover, Harrison told Ma’an what she saw in the moments before the Israeli army boarded the Mavi Marmara.
“I was on the Challenger I, on the upper deck,” Harrison said. “We were very close to the Marmara. We actually thought [the Israeli navy] was coming for us first.”
The Israeli army released edited video footage showing soldiers being beaten by passengers on the Mavi Marmara. The army’s footage depicts soldiers dropping down from helicopters into a crowd of passengers armed with sticks and chairs. The scene was quickly described by Israeli media as a “lynching,” with some saying the armed commandos were “lured into a trap.”
Testimonials from the passengers abroad the Marmara, however, speak to a gap in the army’s footage of crucial moments ahead of the arrival of the commandos on board the ship. Those on board say the missing footage would go a long way to showing the world the wider context of the violence.
Harrison, from her vantage point on the Challenger I, said soldiers first attempted to board the Marmara using two speedboats, each containing about a dozen armed commandos. She said passengers on the Marmara resisted the on-sea takeover using a water hose.
A helicopter had been flying around the flotilla for several hours before it acted, Harrison recalled, saying it drew closer to the Marmara after the successful repulsion of the Israeli boats.more..e-mail
