Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers on ‘Jazz 625’ – ‘Theme for Stacy’

22 December 2013 — Jazz on the Tube

When I was a teenager and desperate to be a jazz musician, Art Blakey was my idol but listening to him play I felt I’d never get anywhere near to his genius (oh those press rolls!) and eventually I gave up the drums and took up the bass instead. Here’s the Jazz Messengers with Sun Ra’s John Gilmore on tenor saxophone. No date for this one but sometime between 64 and 66.

Personnel: Lee Morgan, trumpet, John Gilmore, tenor sax, John Hicks, piano, Victor Sproles, bass, Art Blakey, drums
