The reality behind the Israeli-Palestinian talks
Jonathan Cook In Nazareth, Redress4/7/2014
A leaked joint report by EU consulates in the occupied territories observed that ethnic cleansing was advancing at an ever-accelerating pace in East Jerusalem.
There was a mad scramble by Washington last week to prevent the seemingly inevitable: an implosion of the Middle East peace talks. In a last-ditch effort to stop Israel reneging on a promise to release a final batch of Palestinian prisoners, the US briefly threw in possibly the biggest bargaining chip in its hand: the release of Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard.
With Israel still dragging its feet, an infuriated Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas submitted applications to join 15 United Nations conventions, thereby reviving a campaign to win international recognition of Palestinian statehood.
Although Washington will continue quietly arm-twisting the two sides a little longer, President Barack Obama is reported to be worried that US diplomacy is starting to appear desperate . The same colonial entity pursuing the same ethnic cleansing policies
The negotiations failure could prove an important clarifying moment, signalling the effective demise of the two-state solution.
Both the US and Israel have come to rely on the endless theatrics of the two-decade peace process. Settlement freezes, prisoner releases, rows about Palestinian Authority funding and, of course, intermittent negotiations have served as useful distractions from the main developments on the ground
As Bassem Khoury, a former Palestinian Authority minister, observed last week: Israel hasn t changed. It is the same colonial entity pursuing the same ethnic cleansing policies it did for decades. more..e-mail

Why Jewish state demand is a non-starter
Yousef Munayyer, Al Jazeera4/9/2014
If Washington accepts new Israeli demands, it moves the goal posts further away from a middle ground for a just peace.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demands Palestinians recognise Israel as “a Jewish state” and US President Barack Obama, who used this language in his state of the union address, signalled US support for this position. This is disastrous for the prospects for peace and not something the Palestinians can or should ever accept. Here is why.
First, the PLO accepted the Israeli demand to recognise the State of Israel decades ago and Israel never reciprocated with recognition of the State of Palestine or its right to exist. Now, while still denying self-determination to Palestinians, Israel demands recognition “as a Jewish state” not from the world but only from Palestinians. Israel does not want to formally change its name to “the Jewish State of Israel” which would allow it to join an elite group of theocracies like the Islamic Republic of Iran. It only wants Palestinians to accept it as such. Why?
Second, this demand adds insult to injury. The ostensibly pragmatic land-for-peace approach is one that says the parties will never agree on a historical narrative and must look to the future instead. But the Jewish state demand undercuts this and demands Palestinians accept the Israeli narrative that securing Jewish majoritarianism in Palestine was morally justified even if it necessitated destroying Palestinian society and created masses of Palestinian refugees. Asking Palestinians to make a deal that focuses on the future is one thing, but asking them to accept the crimes committed against them is another altogether. It is unbecoming of a party that claims to want a just peace.
Third, recognition of a “Jewish state” by Palestinians and by extension the US and the rest of the world that would accept agreements on such terms, would not only lend credibility to past measures to maintain a Jewish majority but it will also enable future ones….more..e-mail

BBC misreports John Kerry on talks failure
Nureddin Sabir, Editor, Redress4/10/2014
For once, US Secretary of State John Kerry was not mincing his words when he blamed Israel for the breakdown of talks with the Palestinians.
But you would not have known this if you were following the story from the BBC News website. What Kerry actually said
Here is how Philip Weiss, founder and co-editor of the news website Mondoweiss characterized Kerry s testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on 7 April:
“John Kerry, Secretary of State, blamed the Israelis for the breakdown of peace talks during a hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee yesterday. Israel failed to release prisoners on time according to a deal it had with Palestinians, then announced 700 settlement units poof! causing the latest breakdown in the talks&
“And this is what Kerry actually said:
“‘In my judgment both leaders have made courageous and important decisions up until now. For Prime Minister Netanyahu to release prisoners is a painful, difficult political step to take, enormously hard, and the people of Israel have been incredibly supportive and patient in giving him the space in order to do that. In exchange for the deal being kept of the release of prisoners and not going to the U.N. Unfortunately, the prisoners weren t released on the Saturday they were supposed to be released. And so day went by, day two went by day three went by and then in the afternoon when they were about to maybe get there, 700 settlement units were announced in Jerusalem. And poof! That was sort of the moment.'”
Weiss called it possibly a historic moment.

Australia opposed Palestinian UN bid because foreign policy was subcontracted to Jewish donors report
Philip Weiss, Mondoweiss4/9/2014
I used to feel scared and guilty when I wrote about Jewish donors. But other journalists recognize the importance of the issue. Jewish donors is in the headline of a report in the Guardian on a memoir by a former foreign minister. Writes Lenore Taylor:
“Former [Australian] foreign minister Bob Carr has suggested [Australia Prime Minister] Julia Gillard s dogged insistence on supporting Israel in a controversial United Nations vote was because Australian foreign policy had been subcontracted to Jewish donors& .
“Bob Carr: Diary of a Foreign Minister includes a detailed account of a period in October and November 2012 when Carr campaigned against Gillard s insistence that Australia should support Israel and vote against Palestinian observer status in the United Nations.
“[Former Australian PM Kevin] Rudd s had a morbid interest in the issue which had the potential to impact both on Australia s fate in the upcoming vote for a seat on the UN security council and on his own chances to return to the prime ministership.
“‘How much of this is about money, I asked him,’ Carr writes. ‘He said about one-fifth of the money he had raised in the 2007 election campaign had come from the Jewish community.’
“Carr concludes that ‘subcontracting our foreign policy to party donors is what this involves. Or appears to involve.’
“He describes how nine ministers spoke against Gillard when the issue was discussed by cabinet, and only two in favour of her position.”more..e-mail
