• Who Really Controls US Foreign Policy?

    Wednesday, 7 August 2024 —

    Brian Berletic

From the ongoing US involvement in Ukraine, to an enduring US military presence in the Middle East, and growing US-Chinese tensions in the Asia-Pacific region, regardless of who controls the US Congress and regardless of who sits in the White House, these conflicts continue forward – often with a Democratic president setting the stage for his Republican successor, and vice versa.

Why, no matter who Americans vote into power, US foreign policy, and even domestic policy, seems to steamroll forward regardless?

Contrary to popular belief, US foreign and domestic policy is not determined by the US Congress or even by the White House, but instead by a powerful combine of unelected corporate-financier interests who fund a vast network of policy institutions known as “think tanks.”

These think tanks create a consensus among the various corporate-financier interests funding their activities as well as sitting upon their boards of directors, boards of trustees, or serving as advisors to these institutions.

This consensus manifests itself in the various policy papers these think tanks publish every year, which are then crafted into bills by teams of lawyers and legislative specialists. The bills are proposed to Congress and the White House by lobbyists, who then vote on or sign off on these bills, often without even reading their contents.

Because the center of American power rests with these interests rather than either Congress or the White House, efforts to influence, challenge, or change US policy must focus on these interests based primarily on Wall Street rather than on politicians in Washington D.C.

    What Are Think Tanks?

Far from a “conspiracy theory,” the central role corporate-financier funded think tanks play in driving US foreign and domestic policy was explained by none other than US government-funded media outlet Voice of America in a 2018 article titled, “What’s Behind the ‘Think Tanks’ That Influence US Policy?”

    The article would note:

Out of more than 1800 think tanks in the United States, nearly 400 are based in Washington. Previous administrations have relied on the research and ideas generated by such organizations to formulate policy. Such institutions have been criticized in the past for their outsized influence on U.S. policy formulation.

The article would also admit that many of those in American media and politics began within the halls of these corporate-financier funded institutions.

    The article says:

In addition to influencing public policy, such institutions are often a training ground for those wishing to gain a foothold in media or the corridors of power.

The same article admitted, “think tanks are also a revolving door for talent,” pointing out that,

“in the George W. Bush administration, Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, and Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, all came from Washington think tanks.”

Only toward the very bottom of the article was any mention made of the corporate-financier interests actually funding such think tanks.

    The article claims:

But policies and ideas are often developed through the prism of political bias so knowing who’s paying for those ideas is important.

“I think the important thing for the public to know is that, when think tanks issue a report, it is important for those who are reading the report to try to understand if it was influenced by the funder or not,” says Rom of Georgetown University. “And good think tanks are open and transparent in the kind of research they do so that those who read that research can judge its independence.”

Few Americans are even aware of, let alone understand the central role of think tanks in US policymaking. Fewer still are aware of the monumental conflict of interest that exists between the corporations and financial institutions funding these think tanks, the policies these think tanks propose, and the bills and policies that are eventually passed and implemented by Washington.

Because of this lack of understanding, many Americans believe the future of US policy is determined in Washington through elections. In reality, the future of US policy is determined by unelected corporate-financier interests who advance their desired policies regardless of who controls Congress or who currently sits in the White House.

    How Bills are (Really) Made

CBS News, in a 2017 article titled, “Who Actually Writes The Bills In Congress?,” would admit that “attorneys” who are knowledgeable about the subjects of the bills often write them. The same article admits that bills may originate, “directly from a member, who might receive input from constituents, lobbyists or staff on a particular issue.”

As Voice of America admitted in its article, such “lobbyists” and “attorneys” and even “members” of Congress, are drawn from corporate-financier funded think tanks.

Thus, while many Americans mistakenly believe their elected representatives “represent” them and their interests, it is clear that unelected interests monopolize policymaking, enjoy unwarranted influence over those who sign off on new policies, with Americans only hearing about such policies from the media often long after any practical chance of protesting against or reversing the policy.

As Voice of America also admitted, many in the media informing the American people about new policies, began their careers in the halls of these policy think tanks funded by the same unelected corporate-financier interests proposing these policies in the first place.

USA Today in a 2019 investigative report titled, “You elected them to write new laws. They’re letting corporations do it instead,” spells it out more explicitly:

Each year, state lawmakers across the U.S. introduce thousands of bills dreamed up and written by corporations, industry groups and think tanks. Disguised as the work of lawmakers, these so-called “model” bills get copied in one state Capitol after another, quietly advancing the agenda of the people who write them.

The investigative report also noted how manipulative the titles of bills often are, done to deliberately mislead the public:

The Asbestos Transparency Act didn’t help people exposed to asbestos. It was written by corporations who wanted to make it harder for victims to recoup money. The “HOPE Act,” introduced in nine states, was written by a conservative advocacy group to make it more difficult for people to get food stamps.

The report would lament, “bills promise to protect the public,” but “they actually bolster the corporate bottom line.”

This should come as no surprise, considering these bills originate from think tanks funded by these very corporations.

Congress Rubber Stamps Bills They Don’t Even Read

US News, in an opinion piece titled, “Not So Dirty Little Secret,” would attempt to excuse Congress from having to read the bills they sign off on.

    It would admit:

The not-so-dirty little secret of Congress (and, I suspect, most legislative bodies) is that members often vote on legislation without having sat down and literally read it.

The article explains that, instead, “legislative specialists who work in Congress and, in some cases, think tank denizens outside it,” interpret the bills and explain them to legislators who then vote on them.

According to the US White House website“anyone can write” a bill to be introduced to Congress. In theory, bills should represent the best interests of the people within a Western-style democracy. Legislators who vote on these bills should do so in the interests of the very public who voted them into office in the first place.

In reality, many bills are either written by corporate-financier funded interests themselves or by legislators and their teams who these interests are lobbying. These are bills which Congress admittedly doesn’t understand, and instead depends on specialists working for these same interests to explain to them.

What emerges is policy-driven by unelected interests, simply laundered through elected representatives, creating the illusion of a public mandate. Because politicians can be voted in and out of office, when the public is unsatisfied with US policy, the empty hope of new elections and the prospect of “change” prevents them from ever addressing the underlying factors that prevent that change from ever actually occurring.

Who is Funding These Think Tanks?

Think tanks often list on their websites either who sponsors their work or who sits on their board of directors, board of trustees, or who serves as advisors. Regardless of what information is made publicly available, the same circle of corporate-financier interests are represented.

For example, the American Enterprise Institute does not readily disclose its list of donors, but does publish its list of trustees which includes representatives from private equity firm Carlyle Group, the insurance industry including State Farm, big tech including Dell, and big-finance like UBS.

RAND Corporation, infamous for its 2019 paper, “Extending Russia” formulating a number of military and economic measures meant to draw Russia into protracted war with its neighbors including Ukraine, lists its major clients including IBM, MITRE Corporation, and PhRMA Foundation (which in turn is made up of various pharmaceutical giants).

The Brookings Institution responsible for drawing up policy for war around the globe, including its 2009 paper “Which Path to Persia?” aimed at Iran, lists its corporate and institutional sponsors which include not only the US government, but multiple foreign governments, as well as corporate-financier interests like big-tech including Facebook, Google, and Microsoft, big-finance like Blackrock, Mastercard, and UBS, arms manufacturers like Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin, big-oil like BP and Chevron, as well as consumer goods and services like PepsiCo, Amazon, and Walmart.

How to Check Unelected, Unwarranted Power

As Voice of America pointed out, there are over 1,800 think tanks in the US alone, many of which share the same handful of Fortune 500 corporate-financier sponsors, directors, trustees, and advisors. While Americans can vote in and out of office the many members of Congress who rubber stamp bills handed to them, what can Americans do about the unelected interests handing Congress these bills in the first place?

Often referred to as “voting with one’s wallet,” Americans can compile lists of large corporate-financier interests exercising unwarranted influence over their government, and redirect their monthly income away from them, and instead to local or foreign alternatives.

These special interests did not appear “overnight,” but instead built themselves up over years, sometimes decades, accumulating money, time, attention, and energy from millions of Americans at home and hundreds of millions of people abroad.

By raising awareness of the unwarranted power and abuse exercised by these interests and diverting money, time, attention, and energy away from them and toward a wider variety of alternatives at home and abroad, a better balance of power can be created.

In many ways, the rise of multipolarism represents a successful example of this. The West had maintained a global monopoly over many goods, services, and industries for generations granting the West hegemony worldwide.

With the rise of China, the reemergence of Russia, and newly industrialized nations creating alternatives to what were once Western monopolies, people around the world are now dividing their money, time, attention, and energy among these many options creating a better balance of power. While this process is unfolding globally, Americans can begin a similar process within the United States.

If a better balance of power can be created within the US, redistributing wealth and the power it creates across a wider number of businesses and interests across America, there stands a much better chance of those in Washington representing this wider balance of power rather than the concentrated wealth and power that currently exists on Wall Street.

  • What’s causing the Islamophobic riots across the UK, and why now?

    5 August 2024 — Vanessa Beeley

    1. The riots have been instigated by the Zionist asset Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (‘Tommy Robinson’), who has been working for the State of Israel since 2009 as part of the so-called ‘counterjihad’ Islamophobia movement established by that state. When his organisation, the English Defence League, was incorporated in 2011, two years after its inception, it was named the English & Jewish Defence League. The Jewish Defence League, a Zionist terrorist organisation, has been a key part of violent Islamophobic street thuggery in the UK over the past decade.

    2. Yaxley-Lennon is one of the most high-profile actors in the State of Israel’s Online Influencers Programme in response to Operation Al-Aqsa Storm. He and others, like Oli London, Noa Tishby, Hen Mazzig, Arsen Ostrovsky and Emily Schrader (and many others) are paid to distribute Zionist propaganda, of which pushing back against pro-Palestine protests and sowing Islamophobia are two important and interlinked aims.

    3. The recent Islamophobic riots in the UK should be seen as the latest phase of the State of Israel’s war on British Muslims, who it sees as originating the protest movement in the UK. These riots are designed to punish Muslims for their anti-Zionist sentiment after various other methods to suppress opposition to Zionism by the State of Israel have been thwarted. The State of Israel’s attempts to use its assets and operatives in the British political and media class — such as Suella Braverman and Michael Gove — to thwart pro-Palestinian protests have failed. Zionist counter-protests have failed to mobilise significant numbers. Sporadic Zionist thuggery and the use of other assets — such as Iranian secularist extremists — have also failed to intimidate Muslims. So now the State of Israel is weaponising its cannon fodder on the white nationalist far-right, who have greater numbers than either Zionist street thugs or Iranian monarchists and secularist extremists.

    4. Finally, there are also questions about which actor authored the idea that Muslims were responsible for the ostensible triggers for these events. MI6 and its assets (eg Paul Mason) are desperately trying to pretend this was a Russian disinfo op. But the original stories did not come from Russia. Where did they come from?

  • WordPress has ruined my site!

Wednesday, 7 August 2024 — The New Dark Age

The theme that I’ve been using here for about 10 years, simple and easy to maintain was broken by changes WordPress made to its software and no longer worked, thus I was forced to use a new theme. However, because WordPress has radically transformed the way it works, my existing Website has lost ALL its functionality! This is forcing me to completely reengineer the site, effective;y I now have to spend hours, days rebuilding my content using an incomprehensible interface, that bears no resemblence to the WordPress I’ve been using for the past 15-plus years!

To say that I’m pissed off is somewhat of an understatement and short of spending hours and hours mastering an entirely new interface, there’s nothing I can do! The 30,000 or so stories I’ve accumulated here are currently inaccessible, not only to readers but to me!

  • EDL & Tommy Robinson linked to Zionist Fascist Jewish Defence League

    Wednesday, 7 August 2024 — MintPress News

Tommy Robinson has had deep links to Israel since the very beginning of his political activity in 2009.

MintPress outlines what we know so far:

Tommy Robinson founded the English Defence League with Paul Ray in 2009. Ray previously infiltrated and spied on the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement (ISM).

Former Israeli soldier Roberta Moore registered the EDL on Companies House and later changed the name to the Jewish Defence League (JDL UK) as a branch of the Zionist terror group founded by Meir Kahane.

She officially headed the Jewish Unit of the EDL and regularly hosted rallies outside the Israeli embassy with the Zionist Federation.

Rabbi Nachum Shifren, an Israeli Military trainer and driver of JDL founder Meir Kahane was an early supporter of the EDL often speaking at rallies for them.

Tommy Robinson later became a Shillman Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Centre alongside Ben Shapiro.

Both of their positions were funded by board member of the Friends of the IDF charity Robert Shillman.

When Tommy Robinson faced legal troubles his lawyer fees were paid for by the US think tank the Middle East Forum.

The organisation is headed by former employee of the Israeli Ministry of Defence Greg Roman.

  • Resistance Axis: A Calculated, Simultaneous Strike on Israel

     Monday, 5 August 2024 —

    Ali Rizk

A Hezbollah source tells The Cradle that Iran, Lebanon, and Yemen will launch simultaneous retaliatory strikes against Israel, intended to overwhelm the Iron Dome. Let’s wait and see.

West Asia stands on a knife’s edge as the region’s Axis of Resistance prepares to retaliate against a series of recent Israeli assassinations and aggressions.

Iran, Hezbollah, and Yemen’s Ansarallah-aligned armed forces have vowed to make the occupation state pay a heavy price following the targeted killing of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah senior commander Fuad Shukr in southern Beirut.

Additionally, Israel bombed the Hodeidah port in Yemen following Sanaa’s successful ‘Yafa’ drone operation in Tel Aviv on 19 July.

An official from the Lebanese resistance has informed The Cradle that “The response will come at once from Iran, Hezbollah, and Yemen,” adding that the goal was to “inflict a painful blow to Israel which may not be achieved should separate retaliations be pursued.”

    Executing the ‘Unity of Fronts’

Retaliation is all but certain and could happen within hours, according to senior US officials. A report yesterday by Axios claims that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken informed his G7 counterparts that the response could begin as early as within the next 24 hours.

Just yesterday, Ali al-Qahoum, a member of the political bureau of Ansarallah, emphasized that the response to Israel will not just come from Tehran:

We affirm our commitment to the battle, steadfastness, awareness, honor, and pride in standing with Palestine, the cause of the nation.

The critical question now is the scope and severity of the retaliation. Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah has promised a painful yet calculated blow to Tel Aviv. During Shukr’s funeral procession, Nasrallah warned that Israel had crossed the line, promising “a real and well-calculated response” – distinct from the cross-border operations Hezbollah has conducted against Israel since 8 October.

    Flattening the Iron Dome

Other well-informed sources agree that the response could be coordinated, suggesting that retaliation from multiple fronts simultaneously is likely. They tell The Cradle that such an approach could take Israel’s primary air defense system, the Iron Dome, out of commission by preventing it from rapidly rearming. They believe this is achievable given Hezbollah’s capacity to launch a significant barrage of missiles and given Lebanon’s geographical proximity to potential Israeli targets.

These assessments appear to be consistent with those made by US officials who have warned  that the Iron Dome could be overwhelmed by Hezbollah’s missile and drone arsenal should a full-scale war erupt.

Senior US military officials, meanwhile, have gone on the record cautioning that Washington would probably be unable to provide Tel Aviv with sufficient protection even in a single front, full-scale war with Hezbollah. US Joint Chief of Staff Charles Brown said as much in his remarks to the press in late June.

From our perspective, based on where our forces are, the short-range between Lebanon and Israel, it’s harder for us to be able to support them [Israel] in the same way we did in April [with Operation Truthful Promise].

Unwilling US support for Tel Aviv

Although much has been said about the US and its allies successfully thwarting Iran’s response to the Israeli attack on its consulate last April, it is noteworthy that all targeted Israeli military bases were hit during the Iranian retaliatory strikes. Operation Truthful Promise was intended more as a message, indicating that Tehran would no longer tolerate Israeli aggression against its interests.

US military reinforcements in the region may help intercept missiles and drones coming from Lebanon, while vassal state Jordan could also play a part as it did during Iran’s retaliatory strikes. However, this also makes US military assets and those of its partners legitimate targets for the Resistance Axis.

As former Pentagon analyst Michael Maloof explains to The Cradle:

Hezbollah would likely target US warships in the region that would take part in intercepting missiles directed at Israeli targets.

“As in 2006, I envision US involvement focused more on evacuating many of the 86,000 Americans now in Lebanon who would want to leave,” adds Maloof.

Washington’s top military officials also appear firmly opposed to being drawn into an active offensive role should a wider war erupt with Hezbollah, let alone a dreaded multi-front war. This stance is supported by statements from US Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Brown, indicating the Pentagon’s limited willingness to protect the occupation state.

Note that Washington’s pledges to defend Israel have made no mention of potential offensive action, reflecting an American desire to avoid a wider war. Experts doubt the US will become heavily involved in any full-scale war, supported by public statements underscoring the importance of avoiding regional escalation – and voiced more privately, the desire to keep US military targets safe from retaliatory strikes.

    Military risk and political calculations

As Brown said at the time, Washington’s main message is:

To think about the second order of effect of any type of operation into Lebanon, and how that might play out and how it impacts not just the region, but how it impacts our forces in regions as well.

The general – the most senior ranking US military official and the senior military advisor to the White House – was delivering a message that carries special significance amidst the recent developments.

By stating that an Israeli-initiated war on Lebanon put US troops at risk, Brown was essentially saying that a wider regional war was not seen as helping US interests by the Pentagon’s top brass.

Given these statements, it remains possible – though far from guaranteed – that the outgoing Biden administration may rein in Israel regardless of how painful a blow is delivered to it by the Axis of Resistance.

The upcoming US election in November is another factor that may prevent a regional conflagration. “The US getting more militarily involved with Israel,” warns Maloof, “would lead to riots in the streets of Chicago at the Democratic Convention later this month.”

These realities suggest a scenario where Washington might force Tel Aviv to absorb the Axis of Resistance’s retaliation, however severe it may be.

  • Venezuela: Edmundo Gonzalez, Promoted by the USA, is a Former CIA El Salavador Death Squad Accomplice

    Sunday, 4 August 2024 —

    LA Progressive

    Interview with Gloria Guillo

Maduro Wins Venezuelan Election Despite U.S.- Organized Coup Attempt

It was clear going into the vote, from Maduro’s massively attended political rallies, that he remained their favorite.

Sanctions are a misnomer when it comes to Venezuela. Here, the U.S. isn’t “just” illegally punishing a nation-state to effect regime change by withholding necessary resources and key inputs that cause food shortages, grave illness, death, and economic instability.

In Venezuela, the United States is also committing racketeer-level crimes against its people for not handing over their sovereignty and oil to Washington’s oligarchy on a silver platter, even though Maduro Wins

That is a serious charge. But the proof is in plain sight for anyone not brainwashed by The New York Times, Washington Post, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, Facebook, Google, and the rest of our state-controlled corporate media, which has been infiltrated and corrupted by the CIA.

Venezuela is recognized as having the largest proven oil reserves in the world.

So, when it comes to having their bulletproof electoral process maligned when Maduro wins, electoral results contested, and its results ignored by the United States—a country with an electoral process that is a farce in comparison since it is contested by both its major political parties—the Venezuelan people were not perturbed and still unwaveringly voted their conscience.

Essentially, Washington’s smear campaign against President Maduro failed miserably, as did their extremist puppet leader, Maria Corina Machado’s alleged “threat of violence that will be unleashed with support from abroad” after the election. This threat has President Maduro’s main opponent, Edmundo Gonzalez, supposedly “preparing to flee the country” to Hollywood, Florida, on Monday, July 29.

Voters remember what it is like to live under Washington’s boot and they know the outstanding progress Venezuela has made under Presidents Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro.

So, without much surprise, the people of Venezuela re-elected President Nicolas Maduro on Sunday, July 28, for his third term with 5,150,092 votes (51.2%). The official election results were announced shortly after 12:00 a.m. on July 29.

Maduro’s opponent, who was heavily supported by the U.S., Edmundo González, received 4,445,978 votes, or 44.2% of the total. Voter turnout was approximately 59% of the electorate of over 21.3 million people.

  • Regime change in Venezuela unlikely

Thursday, 1 August 2024 — Strategic Culture Foundation

    By Lucas Leiroz

Venezuelan internal cohesion and the loyalty of the Bolivarian military create difficulties for Western plans in the country.

As expected, Nicolás Maduro won the elections in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Without major difficulties, the current president defeated all his opponents, being chosen by the majority of the Venezuelan people to govern the country for the third consecutive term. Since Maduro was an efficient leader in managing the nation’s path amidst so many difficulties and sanctions imposed by Western powers, the result does not seem surprising. In practice, Maduro has already proven himself capable of guiding the country even in difficult conditions.

The assassination of a senior Palestinian national leader, in Iran no less, marks a major escalation that will likely have regional ramifications.
